Can't wait for the public statement from Elon to shut off Starlink:

https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2024/02/russian-forces-now-using-musks-starlink-on-ukraine-front-line/

Quote

Russian forces are using Starlink terminals on the front line in Ukraine, according to the Ukrainian military, which said the adoption of Elon Musk’s satellite internet service by Moscow’s troops was becoming “systemic”.

Ukraine’s GUR military intelligence unit said on Telegram on Sunday that radio intercepts confirmed the use of Starlink terminals by Russian units operating in the occupied Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine.

“Yes, there have been recorded cases of the Russian occupiers using these devices,” Andriy Yusov, a GUR officer, told RBC-Ukraine. “This is starting to take on a systemic nature.”

Quote

GUR made its claim following multiple reports in recent days that Russian forces are using Starlink devices, including a sighting reported by news outlet Defense One of the company’s distinctive square-shaped receivers close to Russian positions.

One Russian volunteer group flaunted on social media the devices it said it had purchased for Russian forces.

SpaceX, which owns Starlink, has denied reports it has sold equipment to the Russian government or military. In a post on X on Sunday Musk, the company’s chief executive, said: “A number of false news reports claim that SpaceX is selling Starlink terminals to Russia. This is categorically false. To the best of our knowledge, no Starlinks have been sold directly or indirectly to Russia.

Quote

Dmitry Peskov, spokesperson for President Vladimir Putin, told reporters on Monday that Starlink “is not certified [in Russia], therefore it cannot and is not officially supplied here. It cannot be used in any way,” according to Russian newswire Interfax.

“We should probably not wade into the discussion between the Kyiv regime and the businessman Musk,” Peskov said.

Musk provided thousands of Starlink terminals to Ukraine to help it fend off Russian troops soon after their full-scale invasion in February 2022, giving Kyiv’s forces a valuable technological advantage in the form of high-speed internet for communications, targeting and battlefield management software. However, Kyiv’s praise for the businessman turned to fury when Musk started to limit the operation of Starlink in areas of Ukraine that Russian forces have occupied since 2014, including Crimea.

Spoiler

That was because Ukraine wanted its forces to be able to use the system for operations in Russian-controlled areas of their territory, though Kyiv is now complaining because Russians, as well as Ukrainians, are using it in contested areas. But introducing or reintroducing so-called “geofencing” to stop Starlink use by Russia on the front line could also affect the Ukrainian military’s devices given the proximity of the two sides’ positions.

The apparent use of the technology by Russian forces to help their invasion is another example of Moscow’s forces adapting their tactics in response to Ukraine’s innovations as they have done with the mass use of cheap, commercially available racing drones.

Ukrainian media reported that Russian forces may have obtained the terminals via intermediaries in Dubai.

In response, SpaceX said on X: “Starlink also does not operate in Dubai. Starlink cannot be purchased in Dubai nor does SpaceX ship there.”

“Additionally, Starlink has not authorized any third-party intermediaries, resellers or distributors of any kind to sell Starlink in Dubai. If SpaceX obtains knowledge that a Starlink terminal is being used by a sanctioned or unauthorized party, we investigate the claim and take actions to deactivate the terminal if confirmed.”

A biography of Musk by Walter Isaacson published last autumn detailed how the tycoon refused to allow Starlink to be used by Ukrainian forces for a naval drone strike on Russian ships in Sevastopol. Musk said he feared this could trigger a nuclear response from Moscow.

I struggle to imagine how lame and incompetent someone would have to be as one of the world's wealthiest men, single and cisgendered (allegedly), but reduced to offering horses or other bribes to random masseuses in exchange for a handjob. And impregnating some women but only through artificial means.

Elon Musk Bought Twitter to Settle His Jet-Tracking Beef, New Book Claims

Quote

Spoiler

Twitter is one of the internet’s favorite places for internet beef and Elon Musk is no stranger to it. A particular beef involving a college student tracking his private jet was the catalyst for the billionaire purchasing shares of Twitter, commencing his takeover of the social media platform, according to a new book about the ordeal.

“Musk had also unsuccessfully petitioned Agrawal [CEO of Twitter at the time] to remove a Twitter account that was tracking his private plane,” says an excerpt from Battle for the Bird, a new book on Musk’s takeover, published by Bloomberg on Thursday. “The billionaire started buying Twitter shares shortly after Agrawal denied his request.”

The new book is a detailed investigation into the power struggle at Twitter, now called X, in the last few years. The book seems to confirm that Musk’s personal gripes played a key role in his $44 billion acquisition of the social media platform.

Musk touts “free speech” as the main reason he bought Twitter, but the billionaire was actively trying to silence a college student he had a feud with before he was CEO. A Twitter account tracking Elon Musk’s private jet, @elonjet, was front of mind for the billionaire in Jan. 2022 when Musk started buying stock in the company, according to a tweet from the book’s author Kurt Wagner.

Nearly a year later, Musk’s acquisition was complete and he ended up banning @elonjet. The person behind the account, Jack Sweeney, is a college student who’s now famous for tracking the private jets of Musk and Taylor Swift. Sweeney simply amplifies publicly available flight information, but celebrities hate him.

Musk promised to not ban Sweeney’s account a month before he did, crediting “his commitment to free speech,” even though the account posed “a direct personal safety risk.” Sweeney now operates @elonjet on Threads.

The billionaire’s feud with Sweeney is a case study of Musk’s motivating factors. Yes, free speech is important to him, but not as important as getting his way. Buying Twitter made Musk king of the sandbox, and he’s certainly exercised that control in the year since.

Musk’s acquisition of Twitter has always been confusing. It’s widely been seen as a misstep for the billionaire, distracting him from other projects at Tesla, SpaceX, and xAI. Musk was heavily focused on promoting right-wing speech when he bought Twitter, which was lacking under Jack Dorsey’s management, but also on settling his internet beef.

Judge Orders Elon Musk To Answer To Regulators In Twitter/X Probe

Quote

A US judge has ordered Elon Musk to comply with a subpoena to answer questions from regulators about his purchases of Twitter shares last year.

The order comes after Musk, who beefed up his stake in Twitter -- now called X -- before buying the company for $44 billion, did not show up for a scheduled deposition in September with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), according to a legal filing.

"The court grants the SEC's application to enforce the subpoena," the decision by California judge Laurel Beeler, published on Saturday and seen by AFP, stated.

The billionaire boss and the SEC now have a week to agree on a time and place for Musk to give testimony, it added.

The SEC investigation pertains to all of Musk's purchases of Twitter stock in 2022 as well as his statements and filings with market regulators, court documents stated.

Musk took part in two half-day depositions in July with the SEC, which told the court it has since received "thousands of documents" that have raised questions they want him to answer.

Musk's objections to the latest deposition included an accusation that the SEC is using its power to "harass" him, the commission said in the filing.

"The SEC has already taken Mr. Musk's testimony multiple times in this misguided investigation -- enough is enough," Musk attorney Alex Spiro said in reply to an AFP inquiry.

But the SEC had argued that "Musk's ongoing refusal to comply with the SEC's administrative subpoena is hindering and delaying the SEC staff's investigation to determine whether violations of the federal securities laws have occurred," according to court documents.

Musk's role at the social network has been marked by numerous controversies and led to various legal actions on the part of investors, former employees and companies that had contracts with Twitter.

Shareholders, for example, have filed a lawsuit against Musk, accusing him of disclosing his five percent stake in Twitter too late, after the deadline set by the SEC.

He's promoting explicitly nazi propaganda to tens of millions (if not hundreds of millions) of people pretty much daily. I'm pretty sure at this point the bad outweighs the good. We just haven't seen the full impact yet.

Yeah, from Facebook. Dell was pretty dorky looking in high school, but he has lost a lot of weight, works out more, doesn't wear dorky glasses and gets decent haircuts.

LOL - Decent haircuts??!!

Michael is 58 years old. He has more hair and less gray than the last time I saw him 10 years ago. You mean to tell me that you gentlemen don't understand how good effective and difficult to detect mens' hairpieces have become? You might wonder, is this just follicular implant? Nope. You can tell by how much hair he had already lost at a much younger age, as well as by the fact that you can't see his roots.

Besides the hairpiece he's obviously getting some other work done, too.

Yeah, Musk is pretty tall. I can't comment on his hips or yours for that matter - Although it seems like a good topic for discussion.

The peak height of the cyberrust is 70.5" so his own height appears to be yet another factor elmo has lied about.

They're a pair then. Elon had a hair transplant, but he still had some hair with which to graft when that happened.

Any money elmo's spent trying to make himself appear more attractive has been completely wasted.

I guess nobody agrees with me about his lean-in for lovin' body language? Seems awkward as hell. Elmo spoke at the (then) annual Dell World convention in Austin 10ish years ago. His arrogance was off the charts and he was rude af, even toward Michael. I'd be surprised if he and Michael were anything beyond business acquaintances (but MJD's politics absolutely and disappointingly suck).
