Literally all Trump has to NOT do for Republicans to put set stone that they are the party of law and order and border security (and thus the party in power for the next few decades) is put whole specific groups of American citizens in camps or deport them out of the country.  So all things Nazi minus the genocide.

By the midterms, millennials in DC  are going to be saying "Trumps an asshole but I have to admit this place FEELS safer".  Hayseed tourists from the fly over parts of our country are going to say the same thing without the "asshole" caveat.  All this because they are going to disappear the appearance of homelessness.

By next year, mayors like Dallas' Eric Johhson ("big strong guy, tears in his eyes") are going to be asking Trump to send guardsmen down to Dallas to help with the homeless problem.

So I am recalibrating my calculations in Trumps America.  I hope to see some of these GOP assholes predecease me.  EVERYTHING ELSE is gravy.

Is anyone else having trouble getting into the start of football season while staring down the barrel of all of this fascist shit? I just can't get excited even with the team and #1 ranking.  Just feels hollow planning anything for football season while also planning for how to get my family out of the country in a day's notice if needed.

Yes. And it doesn’t help that our state generally and our alma mater specifically are growing ever more aligned with the fascists. I feel myself not only less enthused about college football overall, but also less inclined to root for our team. It’s a fucked-up feeling.

Are you under the impression most Americans have "fuck you" money and can afford to just jaunt off to Europe or Mexico for years? Evacuating is a last resort to escape sure death as a political refugee.

What a fucking prick.

Oh my sweet summer child.  You think that there are still rules and laws.

There are not.  There are many that nominally remain, and will remain....because the regime doesn't want to mess with them.  But if the regime decides that the law is something else tomorrow -- that contracts are only valid if the parties are wearing MAGA hats when they sign them, for example -- that will be the law.  It may take a bit of time to get cemented through official actions and such, but that is how it works now.

You live in an absolute monarchy now.  It's time you realize it.

It’s almost like prop haven’t been paying attention.  Throw phrases like “Donald isn’t a true conservative” or “the pubs won’t let Donald do that they’ll draw the line” out the window.

I think "get off the internet" is a lot closer to "don't worry about the nazis" (the thing I paraphrased as what you said) than it is "support the fascists" (the thing you think I paraphrased as what you said).

It's ok for people to be worried. It's best if they don't obsess over it, but telling them they should care more about UT football than fascism is ridiculous.

It's time to realize that we are reaching the time where we have one of three choices: leave, fight, or submit.

I'm not sure where I am or where my family is yet.  Somewhere in the first two.  I suspect my daughter has chosen the first.  My son has chosen the first for now....but has a strong inclination to return and choose the second.  As for my wife and me?  I don't know yet.  I'm still in the stage being enraged and heartbroken that these are our choices.

But we're there.  The choosing is already happening for many, and with good reason.

What irritates the fuck out of me are people who can’t recognize their own privilege. I recognize my own. I’m educated, have a clinical doctorate, my husband; the same. We make good money and absolutely have choices (I hope) if the day comes that we have to flee. I know there are far more that don’t have the privilege that I have and there are far more that have way more. I fear for and care deeply about those that aren’t able to claim the same advantages that I have. So yeah, football season is fairly low on things that are important to me right now

So much #winning

https://www.newsweek.com/us-hits-highest-layoffs-since-covid-2111794

US layoffs surged in July to their highest level since the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In July, there were 62,075 job cuts announced, according to a report by outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas. That's a 29 percent jump from June and 140 percent higher than the 25,885 announced in July 2024.

The July figure is well above the post-pandemic average for the month (23,584 between 2021 and 2024) and slightly higher than the past decade's July average of 60,398. It pushes the 2025 total to 806,383 layoffs—a 75 percent increase compared with the same period last year and already 6 percent higher than all of 2024. It's the highest January-to-July figure since 2020, when pandemic shutdowns drove layoffs above 1.8 million.

The surge in layoffs in 2025 is due to a mix of government downsizing, corporate restructuring and the growing effects of artificial intelligence. Public agencies, tech firms and retailers are leading the cuts.

"We are seeing the federal budget cuts implemented by DOGE impact nonprofits and health care in addition to the government. AI was cited for over 10,000 cuts last month, and tariff concerns have impacted nearly 6,000 jobs this year," said Andrew Challenger, a senior vice president and labor expert at Challenger, Gray & Christmas.

No worries, we'll just quit publishing the unemployment report:

"White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt did not commit to job reports continuing to be put out monthly, only saying it was “the hope” of the administration that the releases will continue following a major shakeup.

At a Tuesday White House press conference, Real Clear Politics’ Phillip Wegman asked Leavitt if monthly jobs reports from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics would continue after EJ Antoni, the nominee to lead the Bureau of Labor Statistics, said reports would not be released until the data is “corrected.”

The ATV and dirtbike rides are in fact bullshit, they’re dangerous and disrupt traffic and that is the entire goal.  It’s OK to point out that dozens of kids on dirtbikes or ATVs shouldn’t be clogging major thoroughfares.

As @Bateshorn has pointed out, DC genuinely does have a “teen” disorder problem that regularly metastasizes into real-life consequences for regular people. It’s been a conscious choice by local authorities not to deal with it. That doesn’t mean that deploying the guard is needed, but at the same time people get tired of “just live with it” as a response to stuff that is a real quality of life issue that can be solved.

My wife and I are trying to figure out if our family is going to be (1) or (2). We both have deep family history in Texas, and love what this state could be but hate what it chooses to be. It's only gotten worse in this state for my entire life: education, roads, public services, on and on its all worse due to neglect.

It's frustrating to be in this position of just wanting to be able to focus on being the best dad I can be for my daughter and best husband for my wife, while watching their rights be actively stripmined. I don't know what I can do to fix this - voting hasn't done shit, nor has engaging with my elected representatives. What would our Dear Leader immamac suggest instead? Upping my burnt ends donation and drinking till I forget about it all?

Arkansas....doing a victory lap about 0.75% of its export economy, while grinning wildly as they receive a smooth, Trump-administered buttfucking on nearly a quarter of its export economy.  Simps who are also bad at math.  Checks out.

Most people will stay. Making less money in a free society seems like a good choice. No amount of money or property could keep me in this country any longer than I have to be here. Too many folks around this world need help and I’d rather dedicate whatever amount of time I have to still live helping them. To those who are staying it will be harsh, some of you will wind up in prison, but they will not win in the end.

Yeah. I like to think I’d stay and fight and I’m probably too old to do anything else. But the fact is that the Texas that I grew up with - the fearless Texas that was defined by generosity  and optimism and largeness of spirit and attracted my ancestors here in the 1830s and kept us rooted there for the next 6 generations even as everything else changed, the essential Texas- is gone, or at least it’s dormant. And if that is gone, what’s left to fight for? Dirt?

Either way my daughters are likely gone for good. They will take Texas wherever they go. Not sure what I’ll do. It’s either stay here or head out for New Mexico, I guess.

Spite. Fuck these people, they don't get to win.
