It seems kind of strange that they would trust Owens with multiple games or the season, but not a few snaps in Columbus. Yeah, hope it doesn’t matter.

Raise the floor a ton with the Troy guy very short term while not impacting the longwr term guys (Owens, etc) a la Garrett Gilbert

When I was a sophomore in HS, we hadn't won a varsity football game in 2 years. We lost our first game on a FG. Second game, away against an inner city HISD school that had many hostile fans in the stands, and many hostile players on the field, our QB had his knee bent in backwards on a hit in the 1st Q.

As he screamed on the field in agony, our HC huddled the offensive skill guys up and started trying to talk up our soon to be welcomed to the game JR QB. He'd never played a down of varsity football and he was visibly shaking and looked terrified. The HC said, literally, "fuck it" and put in the starting SR SS at QB because he'd played there the prior year in some spurts late in blowouts.

We won and then the JR QB got all week to prepare for Pearland. We won that one as well and he had a fine year. Didn't throw enough to me, IMO, but we damned near went to the playoffs and I enjoyed it.

The HC was a former UT player and an old man by that time. He'd seen some shit. He was thinking on the fly. I think Sarkisian is just trying to see around corners. Shit happens.

This reminded me of the Texas intramural football team I created back in the day that I’ve discussed on the board before.

What I’ve never recalled until I read your story was the fact that the whole team decided on one guy as QB for the team, a decently athletic guy with a good arm. Three series into our first game, not only was he a disaster, but when I went up to talk to him his eyes were wide open and he looked like he’d seen a ghost. Dude just could not handle the pressure. You’d could just see it.

I replaced him on the spot with a guy who’d never played QB, didn’t have a great arm, but who I knew was cool hand luke under pressure. The team, and the displaced QB, protested but since it was theoretically “my” team, I had the final call. That team made the finals and only lost because a student ref didn’t know what an interception in the end zone was.

When it comes to kickers and QB’s, you can always see it in their eyes.

Good video breakdown on Arch

A nice breakdown. I think the accuracy thing is a bit overblown, but in fairness the guy is working with a small sample size.

Even if it holds true, if Arch is the polar opposite of Quinn I think we will be fine: Occasionally inaccurate, great down the field, great pocket presence, very aggressive, and a good athlete.

We need a home and home for 2030 and 2031. Clemson and Florida State are probably out because they already have big OOC games scheduled.

USC is a no because Riley is a giant fucking pussy.

Too soon to play Michigan and fOSU again.

It’s probably going to be Oregon. They are wide open in 2030 and 2031. Washington has Tennessee scheduled in 2030.

Keep in mind the BIG and SEC are working on a cross conference schedule for football.

Same. I like that Texas will play damned near anyone, anytime, anywhere, but chooses not to do so with PSU, Baylor, UH and Tech. At least, that’s how I like to think the admin is thinking about it.

Exactly. Never forget!

Although, are we still bagging on Michigan State? Ya know, that whole Nasser thing?

Or does their institutional misdeeds stick to the gymnastics type world?

Also, although not quoted, Maryland does need reminder of their good fortune a few years ago, and that they caught us at the right time. You know, make em feel the pain.

I thought about Michigan State. Given that Texas never schedules them in anything, I just assumed they were persona non grata irrespective of hundreds of molestations by the doctor and the coverup.

The preseason magazines do not have a favorable outlook for Maryland this season. One of them has them finishing below Purdue on the season. While I follow CFB as a hobby trending toward religion, I didn't really pay much attention to Maryland last year or their roster ins and outs this offseason, so that was surprising. If Locksley trending towards a tumbledown, we should hurry up and fit them in irrespective of other P4s being scheduled.

I kid ... mostly. Seems like last time Texas had other P4s on at the same time as Maryland and it didn't go so well.

Funny, but on her first day of work she wore her Adidas shoes, and her boss told her she was required to wear Nike (or some other no athletic footwear that wasn’t a competitor).

Teams I'd like to see us schedule:

Arizona
Boise St
BYU
Clemson
Colorado
Maryland
Oregon
Oregon St
Penn St
UCLA
Utah
Virginia
Washington
Washington St
Wisconsin

Kind of listed teams we haven't played recently in OOC such as Ohio St and Michigan as well as future opponents like Arizona St and Notre Dame that are already scheduled.

Yes. I still have PTSD from that last trip to DC. Dreary day, polite and unenthusiastic opposing fans, and I swear there was some kind of rain delay that caused everyone to get blackout drunk. But that might have been a hallucination.

Maybe Colorado, but only from the Deion hype. Without that, there is little value.

I'd add Penn State to the list of home/home we should do.

I know people around here will be against this, but I've been to a couple Penn State home (one against Ohio State) and it is a great atmosphere if you love college football. Tailgating is fantastic.

The good thing about a match-up with Penn State is that I'd enjoy printing a burnt orange "JoePa Knew" shirt and wearing it to the home game.

And we have an appropriate costume at the ready as well.

It's only worth it if there's a lot of this and PedoBear references. What an obnoxious blowhard fanbase, and an upper tier college in terms of saying where they went and pausing for you to be impressed.

Michigan State is the A&M of the North.

There's no point to scheduling them.

Well, with better colors, uniforms, band, no fake army, and actual major sport athletic success, but other than that exactly the same.

I personally much prefer spending time in Bloomington over West Lafayette. Bloomington has far better restaurant and hotel options. I can't speak to tailgates at IU but West Lafayette is about like you'd expect which is pretty hum ho. Not bad just very underwhelming.

Based on my fairly wide range of experience, the tailgate scene at MSU is legit, second only to Wisky. Flights to DTW are easy in and out with a not a bad drive. Heading north or west in Michigan at the right time of year for the coast makes for a nice extended weekend.

Other than being an ag school and its abuse history which is substantial, its a pretty solid and fun trip. Which is to say, nothing at all like aggie.

People forget how insufferable CU fans are and what bitches they were as a conference member. Boulder is a nice town, but there is no upside and I don't have interest in dealing with Buffs.

The only thing mich state has to offer are wealthy and possibly cute Chinese coeds who were too dumb to get into a good school.

Which is a reason, I guess, but  if Wisconsin is an option, why not go there and get beer cheese soup and nordic PAWGs instead? Plus a better program, better academics to rub elbows with, etc

Fixed and Co-signed!

But... MSU isn't in Wisconsin for the record.

I know. Another reason not to go there.

And if you really want to go to Michigan the state, there's a much better option in Ann Arbor (and on our recent schedules).

The only reason I wasn't suggesting Michigan was BECAUSE we just played them.

I've said I'd rather go to Wisconsin.

We were discussing other options in the B1G.

Based on my personal experience MSU is the second best option since Michigan is likely not an option.

Why is this so hard to understand?

Because there are many better options than MSU in the B1G if we're looking for "second-best option to Wisconsin that we haven't already played recently."

Iowa: Great School, corn fed babes, I can point and laugh at my niece as Texas prevents Iowa from scoring a point.

Rutgers: NJ is GORGEOUS in the Fall.

Northwestern: Great nerd school, and it's fucking Chicago; what more can you ask for?

Nebraska: Always fun to add to our run against them. They probably wouldn't play us.

Washington: Seattle culture! More nerds!

UCLA: let's go to the Rose Bowl and avenge 1997 & 1998 and be in Westwood where there are more boob jobs per capita than anywhere else on earth

Oregon: Nice area. Great nature. Fuck the Ducks.

USC: If you need a reason to put USC on your schedule there is something wrong with you.

Iowa it shit destination, middling program and shit fans.

Fuck New Jersey. Shit location.

I lived in Chicago for over 10 years, NW is terrible at football. There is no upside, hotels will be stupid expensive but you can get good food. I promise that place has gotten super sketchy down towards the loop.

Have you been to Lincoln? Super fun tailgating under the overpass. Sure, I wouldn't mind beating them again, but they're also a nobody these days.

I'm down for Washington.

I was in Pasadena last time we played UCLA there so absolutely in for that one.

Never been to Oregon, I'd put that as number 1.

USC... of course.

So I think we've found some common ground and variations on opinions. Shocking thing to occur on Surly.
