As an Okie City fan, I'm kind of bummed by this.  This was starting to be genuinely good rivalry where the teams and fan bases didn't like each other.  Dallas might be fine this year or next but after that they'll go to complete shit and that's best case scenario.

There were good rivalries between Houston, OKC, SA, and Dallas but if Dallas is going to suck, there's no fun in that.

Not a chance either of those teams do a straight up deal.

I’m back to thinking he’s doing a bit. Nobody can be this stupid.

Too me it’s stupider to think an NBA front office agreed to ship off their superstar without there being some deeper motives.

Oh, I agree. But they would have listened to what else Dallas could offer to sweeten the deal before probably saying no. San Antonio and Denver laugh at the mere suggestion. Point being, if you're even considering moving off Luka, open that shit up. I guess they didn't want it leaked that they were shopping him, so they kept the player list small.

A lot of this “Luka is fat” talk seems like finger pointing and an attempt at distracting away from the sheer stupidity of the trade. Like, lakers Shaq was overweight at times too, but they never traded him for Shawn Bradley and a bag of chips. Unfathomably stupid and there is some hidden motive at play here.

I'll be the contrarian here.  Yes, Luka is great but I wouldn't give him a super max contract based on his history.  Dude is barely 25 and regularly misses about 1/4 of every season because of injury.  Look at the mess Philly is in with Embid and PG for the same reasons.  They're saddled with the both of them for another 4 years.

Sure, they should have gotten more for Luka.  Neither of these dudes have a history of staying healthy, although AD has done a good job the last two seasons.

they fucking don't care about north texas or mavs fans at all

if you are going to GIVE AWAY LUKA FOR FREE then you send him east

the adelsons are now on the mt.rushmore of ultimate sports owner demons with irsay, jones & modell

This is happening above Nico’s head. Sure, he’s complicit in it. The only way not to be is to resign when you don’t get many more draft picks back in return. But I doubt he orchestrated it.

This is bad. That might be the only game Mavs show up to remainder of the year.

I haven’t read much about this but I’ll be interested to hear the NBA’s justification in approving this trade.

“NBA justification in approving this trade”?

Easy. It’s the Lakers.

Wilt finished with the Lakers.
Kareem finished with the Lakers.
Shaq spent most of his later career with the Lakers.
LeBron is finishing with the Lakers.

watch this push luka into getting into unbelievable shape and winning the next three mvps.

My only hope is Luka stays out of shape, pisses off the Lakers, they piss him off he leaves the team to go be on Love Island, gets sent off and comes back to Dallas after meeting Jason Kidd in a bar over a beer.

I call it the Jamie Tartt plan

Y'all are underestimating how stupid they are. Adelsons said to Nico to trade him quickly and walla here you go.

Stupidity and greed. They see jettisoning Luka as a way to maximize profits. I hope it backfires spectacularly.

Nico who is not a moron just went along with it?   Lol

Luka is 25.  Let that sink in.  25 and one of the top players in the world.  Mavs trade him for a draft pick and a washed up center/role player.

you can say the trade is not without the ridiculous overstatement.   AD is not washed up and has never been a role player.

That goes both ways with Luka, and beyond health, the NBA has to approve it.

Of course they’re going to approve it. The only reason Chris Paul’s deal got denied was that the league was running the New Orleans franchise at the time and had final say. If one team wants to debase itself for the benefit of another team, who are they to say no?

Folks - been abroad and woke up a few hours ago to see this news. WOW! Still catching up... Appreciate everyone's thorough analysis here (you all really know your stuff these days). Let me share what I know, if I'm not repeating too much...

  • In all my years in the business (semi-retired now), I've never seen a trade of this magnitude kept this quiet. I had ZERO clue! Back when we landed Pau, I had the inside scoop a few hours beforehand. My old firm is in absolute crisis mode trying to handle the international scale marketing - haven't seen anything like it. They haven't slept since the news dropped!
  • Word is, Lakers management kept this under tight wraps because they didn't want another team swooping in with a better offer to Dallas. They didn't even loop in LeBron (his people tend to talk, God bless them). They used all their leverage on Rich Paul to ensure he stayed quiet until the ink was dry.
  • On the business side, Harris and Buss never felt AD had that true star power, not like LeBron or our dear Kobe (rest his soul). The league's gone global, and they've been eyeing an international face. They tried for Giannis years back with no luck, but Luka might be an even better fit for a diverse city like LA.
  • There's also a longstanding cultural element here - the team has never been a fan of defensive big men as the franchise face. The Dwight situation left a bad taste, and don't get me started on the Kwame Brown days. The front office has always preferred those flashy offensive players, like during Showtime. That's just how it is. Remember they hired Mike D'Antoni for that very reason!!
  • Between us, there's some give-and-take happening here. Expect the Lakers to return the favor down the line, perhaps helping move some salary around as a 3rd team in a future deal. Dallas seems to be trying to build a collaborative relationship with us, unlike some teams that insist on the "Lakers tax". Smart, IMO!
  • Here's what else I'm hearing - AD is actually happier about this than Luka right now (hence waiving the trade kicker). He was concerned about wasting his prime during next year's farewell tour and the post-LeBron transition. Also, we all know he wasn't thrilled about playing center. Can't blame the young man.
  • My sources say Luka has given his word about staying long-term (meaning we can go all in on promoting him without worrying about the risk he walks), but Pelinka rolled the dice before getting that assurance. That takes some guts, if you ask me!
  • One last tidbit - hold off on getting too attached to any projected starting lineups. Marketing has been told to hold off on any promotional material regarding the starting 5! More moves are coming, mark my words!

Congrats to the entire LakersBall community for sticking through the highs and lows!! This is the most promising young player we've traded for since that special kid from Charlotte!!!

And to everyone who believes this mavericks team will play better than the one with Luka, 90% of nba games are won down the stretch with clutch shots by superstars. And guess what? There are only about 4-5 teams that have that type of superstar who can do it. The Mavs until last night were one. They will never sniff the finals ever again during our lifetime.

They have not one but 2 guys that have game winning shots in title runs.   Something Luka does not have.   I get Mavs fans are mad.  Try to be at least slightly rational

Is this going to be one of those trades where both teams end up worse?  Who plays defense on the Lakers now?  Who runs offense for the Mavs?

Again to be the contrarian, I said this to someone earlier.  Does this make either team better?

Dallas now just has one ball handler/shot creator and he takes a lot of shots in his own right.  Sure, they have a big front line but who there makes shots for them besides Kyrie?

On the Lakers, who plays inside for them?  They're already not great on defense now they're going to have Reaves and Luka on the floor at the same time?

Agreed.  Not saying its great but saying they dont have a game winning shot maker now is stupid.

Whether each team is better or not the key issue. The key here is that the Lakers acquired an extremely valuable asset for next to nothing. Dallas could have gotten so much more franchise help than they got.

To add to crazy conspiracy theories, it sure shines a light on the Mavericks not getting a TV deal done for coverage outside of Dallas.

Listening to Nico in their press-conference, I’m wondering if he’s like Verbal from Usual Suspects. Room temp IQ, bumbling, stuttering about whatever bullshit only to throw everyone off the scent of some supervillain Keyser Soze master plan. Because there has to be more to this, right? Or is the motherfucker just that dumb?

This wasn't about making the 2024-25 Lakers team better.  This gives them a foundation for the future without having to luck into a draft pick.  From a mavs perspective it makes no sense unless you got a haul of draft picks.  I can't buy into the conspiracy theories but how little they got for him is gross incompetence otherwise.

Exactly.  That's why them killing the CP trade was so wild.  It had never been done before.   Only reason it was done was because the league was supposed to be running the team.
