I just got mugged at the chevron getting gas before rental drop in beautiful Oakland.

I had looked around and there was nobody suspicious and after I got the pump in my hand, a black sedan pulled up and two guys jumped out and ran at me…Teenagers with hoods and masks. We were so tight between the gas pump in the car that they really couldn’t use their advantage in numbers, one kid grabbed my left arm and was trying to take my watch off while the second kid was trying to grab m.  The one kid kept struggling to figure out how to take off my watch for like 15 seconds while I kept trying to pull away an FU them.   About that time I realized I had the gas nozzle in my right hand and pumped gas on the nearest one’s head, screaming,  “ I’ve got a lighter... I want us to die!!”

The car next to me had started honking his horn, and so both of them ran off and jumped in the black car which took off like an Indy car and almost got in a wreck.

It turns out the second one had gotten my watch off my wrist before he ran.   The whole thing could not have lasted more than 20 to 30 seconds.

so that was different.

But I kept my phone and credit cards and ID to get on the plane so all is good and I’m drinking a glass of wine at the airport.  My $50 watch looked like an Omega - so they only focused on it and not my wallet.

I got smacked in the face in Chicago one time because I was being dumb and unsafe and the dude got some weed and $200 off me.

I had just used the ATM so I told Wells Fargo that I never got the cash and got the $200 back. Because fuck WF.

I've had a gun pulled on me but it wasn't a mugging-type situation and I just left.

That's all I got.

i was walking about 3 blocks in the Heights in Houston at midnight.  empty street.  I'm twenty years old, and am about 6'1", 200 lbs.  best shape i'll ever be in my life.  a car pulls up and a dude jumps out the passenger side and comes up to me.

it was just an opportunistic thing, clearly.  they saw a guy by himself and decided to go for it.  they had no plan.  guy that came up to me says 'give me your wallet.'

dude goes about 5'4" and 130 pounds.

i'm in gym clothes.  don't even have pockets.  'i don't have a wallet.'  'what do you mean you don't got no wallet?  you want me to get my gun?'

i just grab him and bear hug him.  'calm down dude.'  he manages to put his foot up on me and leg presses himself free.  he goes 'imma get my gun.'  goes back to the car, hops in the passenger side, and they drive away.

i call the cops when i get to my destination.  realized i didn't have much to say.  it really drove home to me how unreliable eye witness testimony is.  i could only say basically the facts that i said above.  what race were they?  i don't really remember.  what car were they driving? i don't know.

Oakland is a completely lawless hellhole and under no circumstances should you go there for any reason whatsoever. That gas station by the airport is the most dangerous gas station in America with robberies and burglaries occurring daily.  Go to google maps and read some reviews.

The streets of homeless villages and burned out RVs are basically a mad max or escape from NY film set.  It is truly an awful place.

I have to admit the fight or flight rush for about 15 minutes afterwards was something

That's called adrenaline.  It's why couch-cowboys who buy a gun, or a knife, or a baton think they are just going to "see red" and be able to perform.  Doesn't work like that.  Your fine motor skills go to shit.  It's why a sport like BJJ, even if you are not any good, get you to experience having other people put their hands on you (and try to strangle you) helps inoculate you to some extent.  I've never been mugged, but I was in think brush and was charged by a very large, very angry boar.  I don't remember clearing my pistol, firing, and most certainly missing each and every shot at almost point blank range.  Luckily he ran right past me.  But I get it.  The shakes last for what seems like an eternity.

What's the expression - you don't rise to the occasion, you fall to your lowest level of training/preparation.  As a gun guy, I'm talking to all you other gun guys.....adrenaline is a motherfucker, and @Gatorubet you did well thinking on your feet like that.  Use the hose.  Douse everyone and everything.  Don't try and be a hero.

Have the rental company put gas in the car. I do not know how much extra it is, but im not stopping to put a quarter tank back in. Plus, if you're in Oakland, you probably get robbed filling up.

Glad this wasn't an uglier event, as it easily could have been.

The only people who care about the difference beteween a Citizen and an Omega are douchebags, so at least those kids have that going for them.

It's why no matter how tough they are, some dude can walk in on you banging his wife, and you stand up, fully nude, and scream at him "I may have made love to your wife but I'm gonna fuck you so hard your grandchildren are going to feel it and your wife is going to film the whole thing" and I guarantee you that they are going to get the fuck out there.  Whether it's you being fully nude, or your raging erection, or the intensity in your voice or your eyes, you have to convince them that you are in fact going to fuck them, and they will flee, saving one of you a trip to the hospital.

Edit: it would probably work at a gas station hold-up, assuming you could get your clothes off and get erect fast enough.  Dudes who cosplay that they are tough generally can't handle another nekkid man.

Glad you are ok. My wife had her purse stolen while getting gas at the station across the street from that Chevron.

We’ve lived in Oakland since 2010 and that was the only time one of us has been a victim. Although, I have seen numerous car break-ins.

Our 17 year old skates all over Oakland and knows which neighborhoods to avoid; and both of our kids (the other is 15) are always aware if their surroundings.

If you gotta wash gasoline smell out of your hair for 2 days and all you got is a basic, not expensive watch, that’s a bad deal.

Glad you weren’t hurt.  Oakland can be pretty scary. I live nearby and go there frequently out of necessity but gotta keep your head on a swivel for sure.

Good post and always a good teaching moment.

Situational awareness, plan to avoid, plan to escape.

it was honestly lamer than that. It was one of those gas station nozzles that dribble out gas like an old man pissing, so I doubt I got more than a cup on him. It was interesting because it took a full couple second to even realize two masked kids were running at me.   And once we started tussling all I could think of was, don’t let them get me in the car and drive away. Because my driver side door was still open and I was between it and them.

And the threat was actually pretty lame, because one kid had my left arm, trying to get my watch and my right hand held the fuel pump nozzle so there’s no way I could grab a lighter. I obviously wasn’t thinking that all through in the moment.

When I studied Kempo karate forever ago, our instructor always told us to do anything to avoid an actual physical fight and it is never a bad idea when facing superior odds to try to act as crazy as hell.   so when I saw gas hit his hoodie and mask the only thing I can think of was act crazy like I would set us on fire.

The bottom line is I was careless and got lucky

Depends on where you are in Oakland. A lot of people out enjoying the day near Lake Merritt.

FBI had an old drill called the Tueller Drill they used to train agents with.  It's up for some debate now, but the basic premise was someone with a knife/bat/etc. can cover 21 feet before you can clear your holster and get off a shot.  If you are expecting it, sure you can make the shot.  Out and about your normal life, I put some merit into it.  Your brain can't process what is happening fast enough to react.  But again, you "fell" to the level of training your subconscious, monkey brain remembers.

And I remember the Kempo movie "The Perfect Weapon" having just about the baddest assest scene ever for the time when four dudes tried to take his wallet

Oh. when I returned the car, the Hertz guy told me 20 minutes earlier another customer has been mugged at the same gas station, but they had taken the person’s wallet and all of their luggage.  So I got that going for me, which is nice.

The airport area is legit bad but Oakland gets an unfair rap. It’s been over two years since they last found a body in the lake!

Like all urban areas, there are both “good” and “bad” neighborhoods. Overall, Oakland is a pretty cool city with a lot of positives.
