I just became aware of the app itself and now today I’m seeing a catastrophic security breach.

TLDR: There is a “woman only” app that allows women to upload photos of men, reverse image search and run background checks, and share any “red flags” or “green flags” anonymously. It suffered a security breach and now there are tons of user selfies and PII of the women on 4chan.

https://www.cnet.com/tech/services-and-software/tea-app-breach-exposes-72000-selfies-id-photos-and-other-user-images/

My thoughts here are pretty mixed. No one should have their data stolen and put on 4Chan.

I see the app itself as incredibly morally questionable. It promises that men are not allowed on the site, cannot search for what is there about them, and allows users to anonymously share information about men they have dated.

I have zero qualms about an easy way to search public databases and return law enforcement info, restraining orders, etc.  I’m a little less comfortable with allowing anonymous allegations of genuinely threatening behavior or dangerous behavior with no record— stalking, domestic violence, threats, etc. Or verified catfishes or scammers.

I see it as a gross violation of basic privacy to allow people to anonymously share their gripes about a date or ex with no verification and no way for the individual to reclama or even know what is being said about them.

And I think that the relationship between the sexes is cooked at this point. Basically open hostilities. We are going the way of South Korea.

I'm a not knower about the war of the sexes in South Korea. Or is that a reference to the cease fire but no real end of the war?

I have no issue with it. Men should stop being gross, creepy, abusive, etc and maybe this wouldn’t happen. Maybe they’ll pick it up on it after they get rejected for dates by women who found their behavior via other women who dealt with it already

Women gotta look out for each other bc ain’t nobody looking out for them otherwise

South Korea has like a .72 total fertility rate and is basically in relationship free-fall.

I think it’s the anonymous part and no way to respond that gets me.  Some of the comments on the site is stuff like “he took me on a cheap date, waste of time” or “pretended to be interested but didn’t ask me out a second time.”

That stuff is just dating pitfalls. You should have to put your name to stuff like that. I can see anonymous if it’s actually a safety thing.

The huge pitfall here is the requirement that the reporter be honest and unbiased while using the Internet.  Should also point out that the user verification process of selfies and DL is nothing close to bulletproof.

It almost certainly illegal under EU data protection and privacy laws (and isnt available there).

Those are just sour grapes. There should at least be moderation to remove those comments

Man, I am so glad my dating years were in the mid 80s to early 90s. All we had to worry about back then was AIDS and runaway pubic hair.

You know damn good and well there will be a shit ton of bitching with zero fact checking or moderation. None. The more vitriolic and hostile the more engagement it will get on the app. True, fact checking and reality will not be factored in, at all. There will also be fakes and catfish galore. Men posing as women to shit on a guy dating someone he's interested in. Women who enjoy watching the world burn and shit on guys who they never even had an actual date with just connected online. To think for even a second that men are in any way grosser, disgusting or shitty in the dating world than men is simply naive or uniformed. I'm speaking specifically of dating behavior, NOT criminal behavior. Perhaps someone who doesn't even date women. 😉

Whats to stop a jilted female crying wolf?

Nothing. These things already exist on Facebook groups and elsewhere. I've got a goodly amount of female friends active in the dating world. Amusingly, I went on dates with quiet a few. We enjoyed each other's company but zero chemistry romantically. We still grab food or go out dutch.

You're still posting here, so it's not likely.

Possible != likely

But.. maybe we found similar interests and became platonic friends instead. Ever think of that buddy?

So I met this guy, went on a couple of dates, seemed nice enough, he kept talking about laying pipe with all these women I knew, I thought he was a plumber, no he just couldn’t stop talking about laying pipe. Steve Shank was his name I think, or something like that. Beware.

Are you new to the Internet, Mr. Worldwide?

This is an incredibly naive take.

As a father of both a son and daughter I agree that there should be an easy way to access criminal records to protect women but this site is an online slander forum that gives men no ability to correct or remove verifiable false information. I don’t agree with the hack, but understand why people may have had strong negative feelings about a site like this which sounds like it would violate Europe/California data privacy protection laws.
