Why did they shut down Mopac at Spicewood Springs for a shooting at 183 and Ohlen?

Don't know, but I came up on it right as it happened.  Getting through that intersection was a master class in stupid Austin drivers.

Ugh. Guess I'm not leaving my house anytime soon.

I heard they ended up catching the guy near the river further down Mopac.  If that's true, my best guess is he ditched his gun, and possibly other things, somewhere further north on Mopac, so they shut it down to gather the evidence (or simply find the weapon before someone else did).

Did they shut it down for the shooting or was it just part of the general construction mess up there?

For the shooting specifically. The updated KXAN article explained it.

Quote

Police said the suspect stole a vehicle from the scene, drove away and crashed the vehicle. APD said on X that the 8000 block of MoPac southbound frontage road was shut down between Executive Center Drive and Anderson Lane.

KXAN was also at that scene where you could see a black SUV that had crashed into several parked vehicles and was resting on top of another.

The suspect then stole another vehicle and was later found by Austin Police in southeast Austin in the 2400 block of La Costa Court, where he was taken into custody — that is about 18.5 miles away from the scene of the shooting.

Wow. Made it a long way

Will probably end up like the chainsaw guy and bus neck stabber. Crazy people they decline to prosecute due to mental illness until they eventually kill someone.

My first thought was that this was the chainsaw guy who did it, or another guy I saw a video of on Reddit who was trying to BREAK INTO A GUN STORE by ramming a truck into it and was released on bond the next day. Like wtf, he’s on video trying to break into a gun store and taunting the cameras to catch him.

Will Garza have him out by morning?

I don't know who "him" is, but you seem to be implying murder suspects are released the next morning in Austin.

I hate putting words in other peoples' mouths, but is this what you're implying? I dunno.

Your link makes the polar opposite point of the one you seemingly were trying to make.

When Garza’s office first came under fire earlier this month, the spotlight fell on two cases in which two murder suspects were freed on dramatically reduced bonds because they weren’t indicted within the 90-day timeline.

Here’s the guy’s rap sheet. I’m frustrated with DA Garza but all of this guy’s offenses were before he Garza even took office. The offenses in Wilco happened when Republican DA Jana Duty was in office. Duty was such a shitty DA that she fucked up a murder trial and was sentenced to 10 days in Wilco Jail for contempt of court. I’m not trying to get CR here but it seems that in Central Texas we have a problem with DAs from BOTH political parties letting criminals off with lighter sentences for violent crimes. The 2016 felonies that occurred in Travis County happened under Democratic DA Rowdy Rosemary and the 2019 felony happened under Dem Margaret Moore.

I couldn’t figure it out either but I was right there before it shut down. This was up on the hill on the service road.

I’m still trying to figure out how it was related to the shooting.

Now it makes sense. My picture matches.

there is a really sad ongoing post on the austin subreddit where someone is frantically looking for their friend who they can't get a hold of that works at target and was apparently shot.

its not looking good :(

Followed up post said he went to her apartment. The police there confirmed that she was dead. That fucking sucks.

I'm still do not know what led to the shooting. Did he shoot people in the store, in the parking lot, trying to steal cars trying to get away, all the above?

Yeah, not a word on circumstances or motive yet.  That's bothersome.

Was also SUPER fun when we had to take out-of-town guests from a place where guns and gun crime aren't so ubiquitous (the UK), and actually had to take a route that avoided driving by either of the cordoned off crime scenes of a triple murder.  "Yeah, we have to avoid that area because that's where the car chase of a guy who shot three people was interrupted" was a fun little mention.

Someone on Reddit said they saw the dude walking on Far West at 9am yesterday morning. Safe to assume he was probably homeless, probably getting kicked out of the house for repeatedly assaulting family members.

Dude is a piece of shit. Just shoot his ass and save taxpayers money.

Men who beat their girlfriends/wives or children are a top 3 category of "yeah this asshole needs to be locked up for a long time." They're a continuous danger to others and there's very little likelihood of personal growth or reform.

Yeah, fuck arresting this piece of shit.  You go on a shooting spree and then a car chase putting more people at risk you need to just get taken the F out on the spot.

They shouldn't prosecute mentally ill people. They should detain then in a mental hospital though, forever if need be. Imprisoning the mentally ill is very messed up.

So around 8:45 this morning 6 plainclothes cops had their guns drawn on a car right in front of the fire station two blocks from the Ohlen Road Target.  No idea what that was about.

Also it turns out yesterday's shooter apparently wrecked the 1st (?) stolen car on the southbound access road of Mopac right passed Spicewood Springs Rd.

Which happens to be 1 block from where my daughter works.

For fuck's sake Austin.  You scary.

Detaining in a mental hospital is another form of imprisonment. What's your main point?

Prison is not the place for the mentally ill. That's my point. A mentally ill person will never get better in prison. There is a chance for improvement in a mental hospital. It is beyond messed up to imprison the mentally ill.

Don't imprison him, don't put him in a mental hospital...sounds like a plan.
