What do you think an acceptable stat line for Arch is moving forward against teams like that?

Does he need 6 total touchdowns? 7?

350 yards passing? 400?

75 yards rushing?

0 interceptions?

A forced fumble on defense?

For starters, I would like to see just one sustained drive for a touchdown.

it has much less to do with stats and much more to do with level of quarterback play.

We couldn’t march 70 yards for a score against SJSU if we wanted to.

As I pointed out on the Arch thread...

Compare VY as a redshirt sophomore in his second start, and Arch as a Rs SO in his second start.

Arch did better, but the stats have some eerie similarities.

I'd put Arch more in the early Colt McCoy stage right now. A guy from a smaller school who is learning while he goes. Colt didn't have the pedigree but you saw flashes. Arch has these high expectations because of his name which gave him the high star rating. Maybe he's just average. Average could be enough.

Yes. We will beat the piss out of UTEP. What you said about arch is why I’m down. I saw an offense that’s less talented than we’ve had the last 2 years but able to be overcome with dynamism at QB. If Arch was great and a force multiplier it would overcome Quinn’s weaknesses and we’d be better. That doesn’t look like the case. That’s the problem.

Man, it's so early. Wisner was out. WRs are still getting up to speed. Wingo is too much in his own head. Livingston and Endries look great. We get consistency out of the WRs, this thing is going to start cooking. We might've been foolish to expect to be great again in the passing game after losing Golden, Bond, and Helm. Baxter looks good at RB and I'm interested in what Clark can bring. We need a home run hitter at RB and no one has stepped up yet. But again, it's early.

Good programs take advantage of years when they have a weak(ish) schedule and they win conference/national championships during those stretches.

We can't seem to do that.  We always peak when the competition is at its toughest.

By the time we're really rolling and have all the pieces in place, we'll be playing the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles away.

UTEP sacked Utah State 6 times and UT Martin 4 times. They were top 20 nationally in sacks last year. From what limited stuff I've seen, they like to bring a lot of blitzes and pressures.

It should hopefully be another game with some explosive plays down the field.

If your boy Parker is as good as you keep telling everyone he is then we will probably be ok. I, unlike you, am suspicous of white WR's not named Shipley and need to see more of that kind of dynamism from #13 before I think our offense is going to be able to overcome a mediocre OL, backs that run for only what's blocked with no dynamism, other WR that don't separate and drop balls that hit them in the hand and a QB who spent large portions of the first 2 weeks skipping rocks. Oh- and penalties and dumb 4th down calls (not going but what we choose to do when we go for it).

I hope Moore is OK, we need him moving forward. I'm not even worried a the defense, so nothing say there other than Littleton has his own island now.

I thought we might see some young blood get some playing time in the 4th quarter.  It was more than obvious that SJSU couldn't mount a threat to win.

This is not the take I thought Wulaw would have coming out of that game after his zero concerns thread. I think everyone needs to just reset your expectations on Arch. He'll be good and with this defense that might be enough against most teams. Is he the Second Coming that everyone seems to have thought he was destined to be, it's way too early to know and way too early to panic that he's not VY 2.0. Maybe we are seeing a bit why Sark kept going with Ewers. Maybe he saw Arch just wasn't ready yet. But everyone heaped all their hopes and dreams on a kid who is still learning. He's still got a lot of time until we need to hit the panic button. Florida was going to be the measuring stick and they certainly don't look super scary. The worst thing for Arch was starting his tenure against the defending champs in their stadium. He didn't get the easy entry that pretty much every QB at Texas in the modern era has gotten. I think he'll be fine.

We're going to beat the piss out of UTEP.

I largely agree with the bulk of your post with the exception of the underlined. Not that I disagree in broad strokes with what you're saying. Rather, I have quickly growing concern that we are seeing some of the same sorts of issues with Arch that we saw with Quinn. I should probably clarify, what I mean is not the same errors. For example, Ewers was good underneath passing and struggled with long ball, whereas the opposite seems to be largely true with Arch. While the broad symptoms are different, the lack of comfort with specific called plays is not, specifically with slow development pass plays. On the flip side, when both players are/were allowed to play in loose, more wide open sort of calls or are forced to improvise they both seem/seemed to flourish wildly and successfully.

I thought the exact same thing. Regardless of score, they weren't doing anything else against us. That would have been a fitting time to get younger guys their feet wet and take a hit or get a catch from another team. Get them ready in case they're needed. Missed opportunity.

Not that we don't have flaws (oh boy do we), but I'm curious which team out there everyone is eying as "wow they look like swaggering national champs" every single game. Oregon looks good, although they played maybe the most demoralized team in the P4 with a lame duck coach and no QB. UGA and PSU played with their food. Ohio State pummelled an HBCU, which is just sad. I trust LSU, Miami, and FSU to put together a full season not one bit.

well, after not being concerned after a week 1 loss I’m despondent after a 5 score win. Everything that could be glossed over by Arch being wildly inaccurate in week 1 and opening game jitters and playing a blue blood and blah blah blah was there in Week 2. The old saw says you will never see more improvement than between week 1 and 2 is often accurate and if that’s true of this Texas team then we are not good enough.

The rest of our schedule and the SEC in general sucks. I’m still comfortable with my $1000 bet that we will go 10-2 or 11-1 and be favored in all our games (except maybe slight dog at UGA who also has plenty of their own problems) but this team fails in the pass fail standard.

they better get a whole lot better throughout the year. First chance is next week against UTEP. Scoreboard doesn’t matter- play to a standard that doesn’t suck.

I just can’t get behind this. Arch had 5 TDs and the defense allowed 7 points. We got turnovers, we had big plays, and there were plenty of teachable moments as we continue to improve after replacing a gazillion starters.

I’m convinced some of you don’t know how to be happy

In two of those games we were aided by incredibly horrific QB play from OU. I don't think Mateer is god's gift to football but he is a legit college QB that will move the ball against us.

I also think Arch is a little slower at processing than Quinn, though that is somewhat cancelled out by being much stronger and not having bricks tied to his feet.

Like I said, the stats between VY's game against UNT in '04 and Arch's last weekend have some eerie similarities. The teams do, too.

1. Both QBs averaged around a 2/3ds completion rate. (14/21 vs 19/30)

2. Both QBs averaged about 6 ypc (49 yds 8 att, 23 yds 6 att)

3. Both teams are breaking in brand new WR cores. (04 just lost the Big 3 of Roy, Sloan and BJ)

4. Both teams have talented but rough OLs

5. Both teams have dominant defenses. (04 was the year of Robinson/Tomey, and DJ's senior year)

The biggest differences?

1. A senior Cedric Benson in 04

2. VY only had 1 TD to his credit and no turnovers; Arch had 5, but one int.

Those are just the superficial numbers, though. The real similarities come in how idiot fans are responding to it; then, they wanted to move VY to receiver. Now? They've all decided that Arch sucks and cashed in on his name. Equally stupid ideas; the right reaction is: These are extremely talented redshirt sophomores, early into their first years as full-time starters, who need to grow into the role.

And honestly, Arch is going to have an easier time of it than VY did. Unlike Vince, who needed the offense changed to suit his strengths, Arch already knows the playbook, and just needs reps for the game to slow down enough to apply it right.

it’s a shitty year for college football with no great teams, but Ohio state has shown they aren’t going to literally beat themselves and I would guess the same about PSU, Notre Dame, probably Georgia.
None of those teams are “good” and PSU is really really shitty at doing anything against similarly talented teams, but would you bet on us right now down 13-7 with 1st and 20 on the 20 to punch it in and beat them?

PSU pretty much always "literally beats themselves" so I have no idea why you'd think this year would be any different.  I'd love our chances against both them and Notre Dame.

Also, holy shit I've been selling sunshine on this program for 4 years now- since december of 21 when Sark killed the recruiting and the portal. I've got optimistic threads in 2022 and 2023 where I had the zeitgeist of this team and this program right with the arrow pointed up, while a confederacy of dunces surrounded me bleating stupid shit like "6-6 with 8-4 as an absolute ceiling" or "we are losing to Bama" or "we won't be ready for the SEC" or all sorts of other nonsense.

Hell, even in the darkest post I've made on here in forever I still say 10-2 or 11-1 and playoffs, losing in the quarters or semi's.  That's not exactly grim, that's just what this team looks like to me as a best case scenario, unless we get a lot better, which, hey it could happen and I want it to.
If I'm a little more surly than normal I got into some poison ivy while trying to fix up a rental house and it's covering my entier body with rashes, blisters and my eyes swollen shut, head to toes, stomach, legs and gooner.  It's day 6. Chat GPT tells me it's the worst from day 4-7. Holy hell I'm miserable, itching, swelling, unable to sleep etc.  At least I'm on enough steroids to hit a home run at MMP right now.

To me beat yourself means turnovers, penalties and dumb shit stuff that's self inflicted, not being fucking incapable of scoring on good teams.  The former is about self inflicted bullshit, the latter is sort of about what your actual quality as a program is.  It's a slight distinction but after a loss we say things like "if only we wouldn't have done this, that or the other we'd have won" while they say things like- if only we were capable of completing a forward pass we would have won.  There's a distincition there even if there's not a difference.  I bet on the incompetant team (them) over the one that likes to cut itself so that it can feel alive (us) if it all comes down to the end of the game.

Posted

I have not looked at the actual data, so I could be way wrong on this.  But it feels like we have been subpar at avoiding penalties the entire Sark era.

Texas Longhorns Penalty Yardage (2021–2025):

  • 2021: 579 yards (12 games, ~48.3 yards/game)
  • 2022: 615 yards (13 games, ~47.3 yards/game)
  • 2023: 731 yards (14 games, ~52.2 yards/game)
  • 2024: 829 yards (16 games, ~51.8 yards/game)
  • 2025: 165 yards (2 games, ~82.5 yards/game, partial season)

That’s just a dated way to look at things. Outside of PSU and Clemson, anyone worth reviewing as a title contender had to replace numerous players on one or both sides of the ball. Ohio State? 15 starters. Georgia? 17 starters. The list goes on. LSU? 4 of 5 starting OL, the TE, multiple guys on the front 4, etc.

The portal and NIL have made parity greater and mobility an issue for roster stacking.

This is also why I’m not despondent and declaring the season over. You fucking people should watch other teams play every now and then. Damned near all of the powers and pretenders struggled with weak programs. Texas didn’t look great, but they didn’t look nearly as ugly as some other big names.

I would add inconsistent OL play to that. Yes, Arch needs to improve, but penalties, complete whiffs in pass pro and poor run blocking have a whole lot to with killing drives and QB play. So I'm just looking for incremental improvement each game and I'll be elated if it's more substantial than that from all the players. This series of tune-up games are just what the doctor ordered for a brand new OL and young players.

6+ ypc across the 3 drives

wide open 5 yards away?  delivery with appropriate velocity - 4 of 5 in this category across 3 drives

wide open in a coverage hole?  delivery with the appropriate touch/float - ditto

wide open crossing? delivery in stride leading the receiver - ditto

It's not in the first two games of the season. Which goes along with your point about all the other powers struggling with weak programs last weekend. I'm not saying we won't contend; I am saying that folks should've expected the first  few games to look pretty rough.

And most of our fans clearly don't watch any games other than ours.

But now everyone's decided that Arch sucks balls, has a shoulder injury, and we should just start putting in that guy from Troy because there's no hope. 😉

to make the standard more achievable let's take defensive flags out of the requirement - committing fouls on defense are sometimes necessary and often accidental

there is no excuse for false starts in year 5, home or away

also zero penalties on special teams - if we are going for the block DO NOT FUCKING DRAW A FLAG - why just not even risk it and concentrate on getting some return action
