Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer was upgraded to “probable” last night. That decreases the chances of a Longhorn victory IMO.

Bobby is such a fucking pussy baby

Did he cry writing that?

The offense had a punch last year? News to me. We struggled to score points for long stretches in most games and many of us thought that would change this year.

OU keeps playing mind fuck games with us over Mateer playing or not. I don't think he will, but hopefully the staff had a good week of practice with a game plan in case he does.

Finished off by saying the general public will make it a story about Arch failing.

this

multiple conversations last 2 days with people in boston pittsburgh chicago and denver

NONE of them were aware of the 34 hurries or 10 flags

ALL of them think it's arch failing

i said it earlier this week - the national media can't digest 34 hurries and 10 flags so they pivot to the arch story

must be nice to be flood and our o-line room getting off scot-free outside of the core fanbase

The OL is so terrible that it may actually be impossible to succeed offensively even if Arch plays well.

for the last 48 hours a dark cloud has been forming in my mind......

I rewatched the first half. You guys are vastly overstating the issues on the OL. ....

You are all vastly understating the problems with the IDL, the interior Defensive line .....

we've seen the OL in freefall getting worse every game....  until we hit bottom or get a dead cat bounce prima facie there can't be overstatement, /parcells

we've seen the IDL play down to the OL performance standard in one game, the last game, so i'm giving pk the benefit of the doubt pending more data

I'm all for shitting on this staff, but who were the better IDL options in the portal, other than Lee Hunter? When you're filling up that position group with 5-6 guys from the portal, you're bound to get some JAGs. I think the bigger failure is that January is the only playable homegrown player on the roster. That is insane.

As detailed on this or some other thread this week, Texas struck out on DL/DE in 2022 and 2023.

The running defense is not the same as the last two years.  I think seeing Baugh wiggle through to open field over and over was tougher to watch than the big pass completions.  He only averaged 4 yd/carry but it seemed like he converted a lot of first downs and otherwise helped keep Florida on schedule throughout the game.  Baugh had 107 against Texas.  Miami and LSU each held him to under 50.

What if Florida is actually really good and Napier is a bad coach?  Kind of like we have dudes coached by potatoes. Sometimes players just ball out.  Florida did.  We can do dat.

That Florida team is very talented, Billy is just a shit coach. Instead of running the clock out vs us he gave us the ball back with a chance to tie the game up

Interesting insight from the In the Weeds YouTube video with Ikard and Lehman.

They noticed that any time an offense goes trips to the field, it pulls Anthony Hill out of the core of the defense for coverage, bringing a safety down for run support — and that hasn’t been going very well.

It seems to be a pretty distinct pattern.

They give Arch plenty of flowers, if that worries you.

Speaking of meathead coaches, on the Ikard and Lehman podcast (yeah, I know) they were wondering why the hell we drop our best pass rusher, Simmons, in zone coverage so often.  PK had an end get an interception 4 years ago so he runs it 5 times a game.

We had that for a couple years under Turtle Tom.

I hope you guys beat aggy tomorrow.   Those jackwaggons are just unbearable right now.

The fact gata won last week is gonna give those assholes a tremendous extra incentive to beat Florida.   I feel certain they will use the Florida/A&M game as a gerbil dick measuring contest to declare supremacy over the sips.   Unfortunately , I think we get boat raced in this one.   But maybe Aggy will Aggy.

If getting curb stomped by Texas A&M will get Billy gone, that is a huge positive hard to root against.

If our defensive tackles weren't pushed like babies last game I'd feel as good as one could about this game (about how I did going into the last 3).

The DTs being soft as butter makes me very apprehensive the way I was going into 4 years ago.

Seems the board is split on whether the DT performance last week was mostly talent, scheme, or effort.

Like coach Pop said to his team in 2012 against OKC prior to getting backdoor swept, "I want some NASTY".

I NEED to see some nasty.

OU getting all the big hits and being allowed to get away with taunting without flags will likely lead to a Mack esque fucking blow out, I fear. If their shitty ass run game manages to push the line and eat up clock we're fucking done for.  (Obviously)

The DT recruiting is another example of Sark’s mismanagement.  They bought lots of the available portal talent but they clearly weren’t up to the task in Gainesville.

Sark hit home runs the past two years with incoming transfers. This year Endries and the punter are good, but we got nowhere near what we needed from the portal. Recruiting and development failures have shown up in a big way now that the portal additions aren't panning out.

Nah, fuck that...ya'll have plenty of games left to lose if that will send Sunbelt Billy packing.

I need to see a repeat performance of last week or even better from gata.

When aggy gets full of themselves the college football world as a whole suffers. Don't do it to avenge us, do it for the greater good.

I went there for the 1995 Tennessee game with Peyton. Loudest place I’ve ever been. The bottom half is sunk into the earth so it really holds the noise.

I was there too, and yeah, that was a pretty good crowd effort.  And I hate to say it, but I’ve been to a few night games at LSU that were louder.   I literally had temporary hearing loss after one of them.  And I could not hear what my brother was saying to me, and he was sitting right next to me.

My one visit to college Station in 2012 was not that, but I was corrected by Aggy fans who told me they were the loudest stadium in the SEC now that they had joined.

This is a random thought I just had, but it seems like AI would be a great tool when analyzing the last five years play calling tendencies of the opposing offensive coordinator/head coach.   That seems like a no-brainer, and an absolute boon to defensive coordinators.  Which means I’m sure they are already doing it.  If not, they need to chat with your university’s best AI guys and gals.

What about if they have to face Ed Henry?  He doesn’t have any tendencies.

PL did this before Simmons and at Wash so it’s hardly a new thing.

It’s possibly a reflection on the lack of challenge going against our guards and center in practice.

The reaction to Lawrence Wright hitting Joey Kent over the middle was like a sonic boom.

Never been to Tiger Stadium but I’ve always heard that’s top 5 for sure. I haven’t been to Kyle since they expanded the seating but it wasn’t top 5 when I went in 1987.

the fact that as bad as we think the Texas OL is, OU's may be worse.

Texas has the better secondary

This place is an absolute morgue. Last time the mood was this ugly here is when Charlie pulled off a victory.

I know someone whose son is on the OU staff and they think Mateer is gonna play. But nothing official yet.

I don't know anyone on the OU staff, nor would I want to.  But, I think he's going to play, and I've thought the severity of the injury was bogus from the start.

It's ou - their own damned mascot, nay, identity, is based on cheating and lies.

This game is their Super Bowl.  Also, Mateer was rocketing his way to the top of the Heisman list before his injury, deserved or not.  He'll shoot himself full of painkillers/heroin/whatever in order to make a go at it and try for some hero points tomorrow to help his stock. If his hand is even at 90%, they'll run him in bootlegs or power formations for ground gains.  Eventually his desire to try to run over every defender will get him injured worse, but who knows if his luck runs out tomorrow.

Which is interesting bc Venables supposedly runs physical practices and surely their great DL also looked great against their shitty OL and yet their DL seems to be producing results against real teams

For me, I haven’t been posting because I don’t know what to say. I’ve never been more confused by a Texas squad. May be one of the most disappointing and inexplicable starts to a season since 2010.

But it’s still a “young” team. The 2023 class hasn’t really had to overcome the adversity the team experienced in ‘21 and ‘22, and there are almost no guys left from that 2022 class. Maybe that’s all this - growing pains. I hope anyway. We’ll learn a lot about this team tomorrow

Everything else (about Arch, the OL, defense) has already been discussed to death.

Final Friday Nuggets Ahead of the Red River Rivalry (Friday Noon) - CJ Vogel

Final Friday Nuggets Ahead of the Red River Rivalry (Friday Noon)

By CJ Vogel

A few nuggets from the week of practice leading up to the Red River Shootout on Saturday.

***

First, the expectation is freshman Nick Brooks trots out for the first offensive drive of the game. Brooks has been the primary recipient of left guard snaps all week in practice.

As for the offensive line in general, they know their backs are against the wall. Will that ignite an improved performance? We will see. But when comments are made throughout the week praising scout team defensive linemen and their ability to create havoc plays behind the line of scrimmage, it doesn't inspire much confidence.

Additionally, freshman WR Michael Terry III was one of the Longhorns left in Austin for the trip to The Swamp last week. I have heard Terry is expected to make the trip to Dallas this evening. Terry also saw a bump from the scout team in practice to the offensive practice squad in the build up for Oklahoma.

I am going to be really interested to see the running back volume share this weekend. Tre Wisner, who appeared to pull at his hamstring following his 2nd half touchdown last week, is not mentioned on the injury report this week and is expected to be available this weekend.

However, does Sarkisian allow some early touches for Jerrick Gibson or James Simon or Christian Clark? At some point the Pony Package has to make an appearance, right?

There has been an increased emphasis in taking the yards that are available on given running plays this week. Try not to bounce and give up guaranteed gains.

The SEC is a grind and the more hits your quarterback sustains throughout a season, the less likely he is to make it through the season.

Arch Manning has already weathered a lot of contact this season. He won't make it through the rest of the schedule if the current rate continues.

Well, none of this is particularly inspiring...

My parents moved to South LA decades ago (Dad was in oil & gas), their first LSU game was at night. LSU receiver dropped a pass in the flat, guy behind my parents stood up & yelled “you bum, you couldn’t catch gonorrhea in New Orleans” and flung an empty pint of whiskey toward the seats below. Parents were clear they were no longer in TX.

If we’re playing Brooks, we’re playing for next year already.

He’s even worse than Stroh.

Maybe, maybe not. We’ll know more from this game vs throwing him into his first college game cold as a desperation move
