I think a lot of folks on this board are underestimating the challenge the Texas offense will have without Arch under center.

We’ve all been pretty harsh on Arch, a lot of it deserved. However the play calling and schemes have not done a good  job of recognizing the OL and WR issues and putting Arch in a better position to succeed.

As Sark tries to adjust to a more short passing game, he’s going to try and grind out a win with the run and short passes. The Vanderbilt defense will know this and will stuff the line of scrimmage. With our OL issues, it could get very rough to score points.

Conversely, not having Taaffe making defensive calls and recognizing the plays pre snap will make the defense more vulnerable.

Every one of us should be tickled with an overtime 13-10 win, with the vaunted Vanderbilt QB fumbling away the game at the 5 yard line.

I think you're going to be pleasantly surprised at how having Caldwell at QB opens up the offense.  I think he's way ahead of Arch in the processing department and better able to run Sark's offense (more like awfence) than Arch has been.

Don't get me wrong, I think Arch has raw talent and plenty of upside; he's just behind in processing, which means he's usually late (which is also why every throw is a bullet...he's throwing into windows that are closing instead of throwing into windows while they're opening).

That’s quite an analysis based upon one whole pass completed this year.

Counterpoint: I think the difference between playing in Lexington and Starkville vs. DKR makes up for a lot of that. Especially with maybe the best ST unit in the country.

Lol what? Best ST unit in the country?! We have the best ST player in the country from the last three weeks, who is probably not gonna see many punts come his way for returns from here on out. I’ve been enjoying your optimism but that statement is absolutely fucking insane.

How is it insane at all? In the one efficiency ranking for ST I've seen Texas is 3rd. Texas has the best punt returner in the country and a very good FG kicker (despite the chip-shot miss last week).

Teams are welcome to quit punting to Niblett. Can't wait for the shanks and fucked up punts and block opportunities.

Yea, our punter also kicks ass. People are still clouded by early season Banks hate

I will cop to being a little hyperbolic in an instant reaction, and ST is way better this year. I had a hard time going and finding ST stats and wasn’t about to spend time going through game logs and compiling.

The last few games have been great mostly because of Niblett punt returns. Niblett was not a consensus All American 4 weeks ago. This season overall we still commit too many penalties and take too many kicks out of the end zone and have made a lot of boneheaded plays. There is no shortage of people underwhelmed with Banks on this site. If that’s all good enough for 3rd in someefficiencybasedonwhateverindex or be best in the country then I guess everyone else’s ST suck too.

I’m not bitching about or trying to discredit the absolute fucking lifeline that Niblett has been, but ST has often been a major liability the past few years. Hopefully they keep it up, but Niblett’s not gonna get many returnable punts from here on out.

I love the Beach Boys.  They were unqualified greatness.

Mike Love is an insufferable prick for non-CR reasons, and is extremely distasteful to many people for CR reasons.

This.

I here this stuff here. I also hear it "On Texas Football". I even hear it on some national podcast. Its' like everyone forgot how bad this OL has been. There is no opening the offense if you can't run the ball and when you pass the QB has 1.6 seconds before being obliterated. There is no time to go down the progressions. Who gives a shit if he can process if he don't have time to process.

Our offense has been Arch standing in and making throws knowing he is about to get smashed or him running around for his life and somehow finding someone open.

Caldwell had a nice run and he will need those wheels. The one thing we will have to see is will he stand in there and take the hit to complete a pass. Sark screwed us on the OL in the off-season and the issues will be there Saturday. Defense, special teams and QB heroics is the only way to overcome the OL.

So lets go out and do all those things and win.

Please, no attempted punt blocks….i can only take so many roughing the kicker calls.

We've been begging for Matthew Caldwell to get a shot. Hopefully he can get the ball out quick and hit some open receivers on slants and out routes. From his limited sample size it appears that he doesn't wait for receivers to come open before throwing it.

Or Sark calls another awful gameplan so he can avoid a QB controversy. Kidding not kidding

I agree.  And to add to this I don’t how many times the last 10 to 15 years going back to later part of Mack’s era we watched games where a team like a K State or a TCU started a bench QB because of an injury and we would joke here on Surly or Shaggy that our defense made that QB look a like Heisman contender.  Why can’t that be us once in awhile?
