I think a lot of folks on this board are underestimating the challenge the Texas offense will have without Arch under center.

We’ve all been pretty harsh on Arch, a lot of it deserved. However the play calling and schemes have not done a good  job of recognizing the OL and WR issues and putting Arch in a better position to succeed.

As Sark tries to adjust to a more short passing game, he’s going to try and grind out a win with the run and short passes. The Vanderbilt defense will know this and will stuff the line of scrimmage. With our OL issues, it could get very rough to score points.

Conversely, not having Taaffe making defensive calls and recognizing the plays pre snap will make the defense more vulnerable.

Every one of us should be tickled with an overtime 13-10 win, with the vaunted Vanderbilt QB fumbling away the game at the 5 yard line.

I think you're going to be pleasantly surprised at how having Caldwell at QB opens up the offense.  I think he's way ahead of Arch in the processing department and better able to run Sark's offense (more like awfence) than Arch has been.

Don't get me wrong, I think Arch has raw talent and plenty of upside; he's just behind in processing, which means he's usually late (which is also why every throw is a bullet...he's throwing into windows that are closing instead of throwing into windows while they're opening).

That’s quite an analysis based upon one whole pass completed this year.

Counterpoint: I think the difference between playing in Lexington and Starkville vs. DKR makes up for a lot of that. Especially with maybe the best ST unit in the country.

Lol what? Best ST unit in the country?! We have the best ST player in the country from the last three weeks, who is probably not gonna see many punts come his way for returns from here on out. I’ve been enjoying your optimism but that statement is absolutely fucking insane.

How is it insane at all? In the one efficiency ranking for ST I've seen Texas is 3rd. Texas has the best punt returner in the country and a very good FG kicker (despite the chip-shot miss last week).

Teams are welcome to quit punting to Niblett. Can't wait for the shanks and fucked up punts and block opportunities.

Yea, our punter also kicks ass. People are still clouded by early season Banks hate

I will cop to being a little hyperbolic in an instant reaction, and ST is way better this year. I had a hard time going and finding ST stats and wasn’t about to spend time going through game logs and compiling.

The last few games have been great mostly because of Niblett punt returns. Niblett was not a consensus All American 4 weeks ago. This season overall we still commit too many penalties and take too many kicks out of the end zone and have made a lot of boneheaded plays. There is no shortage of people underwhelmed with Banks on this site. If that’s all good enough for 3rd in someefficiencybasedonwhateverindex or be best in the country then I guess everyone else’s ST suck too.

I’m not bitching about or trying to discredit the absolute fucking lifeline that Niblett has been, but ST has often been a major liability the past few years. Hopefully they keep it up, but Niblett’s not gonna get many returnable punts from here on out.

I here this stuff here. I also hear it "On Texas Football". I even hear it on some national podcast. Its' like everyone forgot how bad this OL has been. There is no opening the offense if you can't run the ball and when you pass the QB has 1.6 seconds before being obliterated. There is no time to go down the progressions. Who gives a shit if he can process if he don't have time to process.

Our offense has been Arch standing in and making throws knowing he is about to get smashed or him running around for his life and somehow finding someone open.

Caldwell had a nice run and he will need those wheels. The one thing we will have to see is will he stand in there and take the hit to complete a pass. Sark screwed us on the OL in the off-season and the issues will be there Saturday. Defense, special teams and QB heroics is the only way to overcome the OL.

So lets go out and do all those things and win.

We've been begging for Matthew Caldwell to get a shot. Hopefully he can get the ball out quick and hit some open receivers on slants and out routes. From his limited sample size it appears that he doesn't wait for receivers to come open before throwing it.

Or Sark calls another awful gameplan so he can avoid a QB controversy. Kidding not kidding

I agree.  And to add to this I don’t how many times the last 10 to 15 years going back to later part of Mack’s era we watched games where a team like a K State or a TCU started a bench QB because of an injury and we would joke here on Surly or Shaggy that our defense made that QB look a like Heisman contender.  Why can’t that be us once in awhile?

Me too. Lefau is ahead of schedule already with is total tackles, and just one shy of his sack, but Ant Hill is way down on all of his stats. Like, unless he doubles his tackles in the next 4 games, adds 5.5 more sacks, and another forced fumble, he will have regressed significantly.

This is what bothers me about the D this year, and it goes with dropping Simmons into coverage. It makes no sense. It's not only hindering the defense, but them as well. Simmons would also have to double hi tackles in the next 4 games just to break even, but his sack count is ahead if they allow him to be himself. He has 9 sacks last year, and he has 7 so far. I suspect he'll hit the 10 mark, but I don't expect him to become superman. I don't know what Sellers does or has done with him, but it hasn't been working. We need for our D to play as a unit and let them all do what they're best at.

Hopefully he does a better job of containing the edge as a spy than he does as an edge rusher. I enjoy his tenacity, but he’s been punished for that a few times already this year.

I get that, but sometimes you have players that are so talented you have to let them break the rules occasionally. Bigger waste was seeing him contain rush a gimpy DJ Lagway.

That's the entire point. 1.6 seconds is not enough time for a slow processor to get to a second read. It's plenty of time for a quick processor to do so.

The question is what is Caldwell? He released a throw to a 3rd read 3.1 seconds after the snap and threw it before Wingo was open instead of after on the Florida throw but the fact I'm calling it "the Florida throw" means we haven't seen enough to know anything.

The Time to Throw thing is funny. There are so many variables. People say stupid shit like you can get hit your second or third read in under 1.5 seconds. That can be true, but in some cases it is pure ignorance. There are lot of factors. Is there play action going on? If the Qb makes a hard fake and turns his back to the defense, that is going to make the TTT longer. What are the route concepts? IF you are running routes breaking at 12 yards, that takes longer. Running 5 stops is going to be quick. I see breakdowns here where people are like why didnt you hit your 4th read on the backside inside of 2 seconds, he is clearly open on the tape. For the record in the NFL the average time to throw is 2.62 among QBs with a minimum of 200 plays.

I believe there are only 10 offensive TDs in the 5 P4 games.

19 hours ago, ztejas said:

I'm not sure how that's "crisis mode". That's mainly some cherry-picked nonsense. Texas hasn't played with a lot of leads in those games.

OTF/Rod Babers has coined this term “crisis mode” to represent the offense we run when we’re behind, as being distinctly different than the offense Sark wants to run to start the game. Rod has described it as running more simple spread concepts. That’s what we went to in the 4th quarter against MS ST and a big reason why Arch had a great 4th quarter. Also it’s yet more evidence that we ought to just spread it out and simplify it for Arch, even if it’s not the prostyle offense he was promised for development.

The point CJ is making to back up Rod is that “crisis mode” offense is our most effective and is the only way we score against P4 teams, even though it’s not necessarily employed unless a loss is imminent so not a direct correlation. They’re not saying our offense is in crisis, necessarily, although some of us may beg to differ if we continue to trot out 12 personnel and not run the ball well and max protect for slow developing routes.

That context is helpful. Arch was top 15 in nation on pure drop back passing according to Babers prior to the MSU game. Not sure if that is an Arch thing or an OL thing. It probably a bit of both. Processing starts faster when you are not running fakes or rolling out. Anything you add to a Qb will make it take longer and that is in the back drop of an OL that is good for some complete whiffs every game.

Any justification that Texas will run the ball better against Vandy?

My thoughts:  Hoping Baxter and Wisner are more healthy, maybe O-line will be slightly better, Caldwell might be a more decisive runner,  and just being back at DKR.

there is no logical reason to believe the Texas offense will be able to run the ball on Vandy, but the best run results vs P4 competition were against OU (#4 nationally in yds/carry against) and OSU (#10) and worst was vs Kentucky (37) and Florida (26). It was 2.25 yards per vs MSU (#79). The offense has shown that the opponent does not always matter. Vanderbilt is #35.

Bobby breaks down the six-stage RTP protocol for concussions. Very long shot that Arch plays.

Will Arch Manning play on Saturday?

Logic says that it would be unlikely. But these are not necessarily logical times.

We know he’s in the concussion protocol. But we don’t know which day he is on.

The six-stage RTP protocol includes:

1. Symptom-limited daily activities: The athlete can engage in non-strenuous daily tasks as long as no symptoms worsen.

2. Light aerobic exercise: The athlete can begin light exercise, like walking, stationary cycling, or swimming, as long as they remain symptom-free.

3. Sport-specific exercise: This step involves more intense, sport-specific non-contact drills.

4. Non-contact practice: The athlete can participate in full practice drills but without any head impact exposure.

5. Full-contact practice: With no symptoms present, the athlete can participate in a full-contact practice session.

6. Unrestricted return to play: If the full-contact practice is completed without any setbacks, the athlete is cleared for normal game play.

**

If you’re trying to do the reverse math on protocol timing, Manning would have had to show no signs of a concussion whatsoever on Monday if he were to play this weekend.

I’m told he has progressed past the first phase of the protocol. But I don’t know if he has advanced any farther.

**

Coach Steve Sarkisian will release the first official injury report later this evening.

We’re not only watching for Manning and his prognosis, but also that of starters Cole Hutson and Michael Taaffe.

Hutson has been out for the past two weeks. Taaffe missed the Mississippi State game after thumb surgery.

DJ Campbell also had lower leg issues against the Bulldogs but eventually returned to the game. It’s a lingering issue that could be noted on the official report.

**

Texas needs to put upfield pressure on Diego Pavia on Saturday. But they can’t make the cardinal sin of rushing past the quarterback.

That’s when Pavia can really hurt you.

I watched the Missouri-Vanderbilt game yesterday afternoon. Mizzou did a terrific job of keeping Pavia corralled for the most part.

But whenever a defensive end rushed past him, Pavia seemingly made them pay every single time.

Texas needs to get after Pavia this weekend. But they need to be extremely conscientious when doing so.

Vandy is 13th in the SEC in QB rating against, 10th yards per attempt. They are 8th in rushing yards per attempt. Better vs the run, but nothing scary. They are good at causing havoc and the Texas is always willing to allowing it.

I do wonder if having a QB that throwing deep is not a strength will have Sark dusting off the Ewer's game plans

Edited by Codaxx

The more games I watch the more I think Texas would be way more effective in offense if we ran a simple and easy spread, maybe an easy read run and shoot old school offense. Sark offense is ass and complex and takes forever for pass plays to develop.

And when people say “yea but sark can’t help the drops, bad line play and miscues” then my reply is there been on common denominator in sark tenure here and it’s been wr dropping td’s, qb’s over throwing or under throwing receivers, continual false starts and miscues.

simplify the offense and this team is winning out with the defense we have.

Don't get me wrong, I think Arch has raw talent and plenty of upside; he's just behind in processing, which means he's usually late (which is also why every throw is a bullet...he's throwing into windows that are closing instead of throwing into windows while they're opening).

What makes you think that about Caldwell? Two passes where Sark called basic one read quick action pass plays?

I'm not saying it's impossible for Caldwell to do well, but for people to act like we have some legitimate proof that he processes plays better than Arch is absurd. It's literally two plays.

I think you could simplify this by just stating "Sark is coaching college players".  Because I see the same shit with damn near every team I watch.  It just pisses us off more because it's our team fucking up.  Drops and underthrows more of a problem this year than last for sure. Of course, UGA dropped more passes last year than damn near any "good" team I've ever seen but still won the SEC.
