Summary: Russia's February 2023 "Great Offensive" has made about as much progress as Brisket's February 2023 "Operation to seduce Sela Ward."  To be fair, my goal is much more noble, so I'm sure my plan will eventually succeed.

Well, it is a five-year plan.

How glorious if he ultimately ran Russia into the pariah ditch for many decades for no actual discernible positive benefit to Russia.

The interesting part for me isn’t the pariah aspect, which is significant, but how this destroys the facade of the great Russian bear army that was created in WW2. The Cold War generated, with significant help of our own propaganda, this image that was never really tested in a large scale land war. The cracks began to really show during the Gulf War, but the failures of the equipment and tactics vs the US modern equivalent was laid at the feet of Iraqi incompetence. Now it is being tested where they chose the territory, timeline, and advisory and are being found truly lacking.

If the mythos of the Russian military and their potential military exports are dismissed, what do they truly supply the global market? At this point with how the global economy is transitioning, what is their true global export? Is rare earth metals now what makes them a country other nations will go back to trading with? At what point is the investment in rare earth mining in Africa more viable than dealing with Russia?

Without the specter of the mighty Russian bear, what is Russia really on the global stage? OPEC+ and the concerns of the Middle East now makes Russian crude exports less of a market driver. The dwindling reliance on Russian Natural Gas in Europe limits another export. In the future post-conflict what is the reasoning to consistently trade hard currency with Russia? What is a dominant export that helps turn the global market? This morphs the economics from a political necessity to a true profit narrative which significantly weakens the Russian position.

Crazy talk.  If that were true, you would see things like Serbia canceling Migs and trying to buy fighter jets from the French. 😛

For those of you who don't know what this is referencing..

Spoiler

The Rafale is getting a little closer to Serbia

RAFALE-F4-e1641823636618.jpeg

If the year 2023 has started for the French Rafale on the Colombian false start, the outlook for the French aircraft, whether on the export market or on the national market, are at the very least promising at the start of the year. Thus, a few days ago, the Indian Navy officially announced that it considered that the Rafale M suited its needs and operational constraints better than its competitor, the F/A-18 E/F Super Hornet proposed by the American Boeing. If other factors, in particular political ones, can still come to interfere with this contract relating to 26 apparatuses, the chances to see this last materializing this year are from now on very important, whereas an official visit of Emmanuel Macron in India is in preparation, and that other subjects of cooperation, in particular in the field of civil nuclear energy but also submarines, are in discussion between Paris and New Delhi.

Another Dassault Aviation fighter export contract could also materialize in the weeks or months to come. On the occasion of his visit to the IDEX 2023 exhibition being held this week in Abu Dhabi, the Serbian President, Alexandar Vucic, indeed indicated that the negotiations with Russia about the potential acquisition of MIG-29 to replace aircraft in service with the Serbian air force, had been abandoned, and thata formal request would be sent to France for the acquisition of a dozen Rafales in the days to come. In previous statements on this subject, a total amount of €3 billion had been mentioned for this contract, including the devices as well as the simulators, spare parts, armaments and training essential to implement these devices properly. more modern than the MIG-29SMs and Soko J-11s currently in service. To this end, President Vucic indicated that an additional budget of $700m would be added to the country's defense budget of $1,5bn this year, which suggests a rapid conclusion of the agreement.

For the Serbian president, who is historically close to Vladimir Putin, it was a decision that was all the more difficult as the war in Ukraine had fueled tensions and expectations on both sides. Candidate for the European Union, Serbia would indeed have had a lot of trouble justifying the acquisition of Russian fighters, even if they were much more economical than European fighters. Moreover, it seems that Russian industry is now struggling to supply its export customers with spare parts, being largely devoted to supporting the Russian forces engaged in Ukraine. Finally, it is likely that the performance of Russian aviation in Ukrainian skies, even if it has improved significantly in recent weeks, has probably cast doubt on the effectiveness of Russian weapons systems, and more particularly of its fighter planes. Not that the Mig-29 is in itself a bad device, but it is only worth the systems and ammunition it carries, and its ability to evolve in a contested environment, two areas in which the Russian light fighter does not has hardly shown exceptional qualities since February 24.

Russians douse themselves in ice water to show support for Ukraine war

Quote

People in Russia’s frozen far east are dousing themselves in icy water to show support for the invasion of Ukraine, breathing new life into the term “cold war”.

It was minus 22C when about 150 people dressed in bathing costumes and swimming trunks gathered in the centre of Blagoveshchensk, a city 4,800 miles east of Moscow.

Quote

“Today we are supporting the guys who are carrying out heroic deeds in the name of our fatherland,” Nadezhda Bagrova, a local official, declared as people stripped in the cold. “With our own heroic deed of dousing ourselves in cold water, we will demonstrate how invincible and strong the Russian people are.” Bagrova declined to take part in the “patriotic event” herself, however.

Great point.   I need to get my brain around the concept that there are little consequences to Putin for his failures to date…or at least not the consequences that would occur to a western country’s leader delivering similar continual military failures.

How glorious if he ultimately ran Russia into the pariah ditch for many decades for no actual discernible positive benefit to Russia.

Putin completely controls the Russian media, is working to control the internet better.  They've introduced harsher sentences for those publicly disagreeing/protesting Putin or the war.

He might very well survive this, since it's only his message getting out there, and since anybody disagreeing will disappear down a hole.

Am I missing something on the Moldova thing - how can Russia fly troop transports/airliners through Ukrainian or Romanian airspace without getting shot down?

I have no doubt that Russia wants to fuck around in Moldova, but they are landlocked between Ukraine and Romania, and pretty sure Ukrainians would have fighters waiting for them, since we'd give them a major heads-up.

I could be wrong, but probably not.

That's the sound of a bunch of 20mm auto cannons wrecking shit.

The Bradley's have arrived at the front.

They certainly have the proper setup for night-time operations, unlike most Russian BMPs.

And it would be just like the Ukrainians to introduce them in a coordinated night attack when the Russians wouldn't have any idea of what's going on.

And the timing is perfect, just after Putin gave a boring speech to the nation.

Most likely ZU-23-2 air defense auto-cannon.  Which would sound much like the Bradley 20mm auto-cannon.  What's interesting is that they are apparently shooting air defense like this over several hundred kilometers.  I figured the Ukrainians would have a one year fuck you anniversary present for putin, hopefully this, whatever it is, is just the start.  (its glsdb, I think further cutting supply and bridgeheads that the ruskies thought were out of range).  Eat a big fat dick putin.
