We salute the Marine Corps vet who chugged a beer from her prosthetic leg at a Lakers game

Quote

There’s no wrong way to drink a beer, but this is just about as right a way as you can get.

At Monday’s basketball game between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Indiana Pacers, Marine Corps veteran Annika Hutsler filled her prosthetic leg with beer and chugged it while featured on the Crypto.com Arena’s Jumbotron.

Hutsler was, of course, named the “Fan of the Game,” as if there could possibly be any other worthy contenders. That title earned her a $100 gift card, but more importantly, she’ll probably never have to pay for another beer ever again.

Hutsler enlisted in the Marine Corps in 2017, training as an electronics maintenance technician at Twentynine Palms, California. She first began experiencing pain in her right leg during boot camp, although it was initially diagnosed as a stress fracture. Nine months later, though, an MRI revealed a tumor growing on her foot.

Hutsler was transferred to the U.S. Marine Corps Wounded Warrior Regiment in July 2018, but after months of surgeries and physical therapy, she was told that her foot would have to be amputated within five to 15 years. Instead, Hutsler decided to get it over with and have the leg amputated immediately.

“I had just turned 22 at the time,” Hutsler told Marine Corps Times earlier this year. “I was like, I’m not going to waste my 20s knowing that I’m going to get my leg cut off. I’d rather be able to live a successful life with amputation than wait around for an amputation to happen.”

Hutsler medically retired in January 2020 as a lance corporal but hasn’t slowed down, competing in snowboarding, track, field, shooting, swimming, archery, wheelchair rugby, and seated volleyball at events for disabled military veterans like the Warrior Games. Now, she can add champion beer drinker to that list.

So cheers to Annika Hutsler, who found the best possible way to watch the Lakers lose. Cheers!

Any word 200 times takes some commitment.

Buddy walked into the wrong apartment & passed out on the chick’s living room couch back in the day. He was also awoken to the sound & feel of steel bracelets.

I did that at the River Oaks apartments north of DKR after a complex-wide party in 1966.
Chick woke me up around 3am by spraying Cool Whip on my face.
Didn’t call the cops though, and I left.

FARTS SAY MORE ABOUT YOUR HEALTH THAN YOU THINK — NOW, SCIENTISTS ARE LISTENING

Quote

WHAT’S NEW — Ancalle and Maia Gatlin, an aerospace engineer at the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI), created a mechanical device loaded with pumps, nozzles, and tubes meant to recreate the physics — and sounds — of human bodily function. They named it the Synthetic Human Acoustic Reproduction Testing machine (yep, S.H.A.R.T.).

S.H.A.R.T. is now preparing an AI algorithm to one day pick up on deadly diseases like cholera and stop an outbreak in its tracks, according to a presentation at last week’s American Physical Society’s annual Fluid Dynamics conference. Ancalle and Gatlin’s results haven’t yet been published in a peer-reviewed journal.

German police seek help in solving bull sperm heist

BERLIN (AP) — Police in western Germany are appealing for help in cracking a potentially very cold case.

Authorities say about 60 containers of bull sperm were stolen from a farm in the town of Olfen, 90 kilometers (56 miles) northeast of Cologne, late Monday or early Tuesday.

Police said in a statement Wednesday that while it’s unclear how the rustle happened, the precious cargo needs to be supercooled with liquid nitrogen at –196 Celsius degrees (–320 Fahrenheit) so it isn’t spoiled.

They are seeking tips from the public that might lead to the recovery of the sperm, which was intended for artificial insemination.

Baltimore woman was again arrested for stealing a watch from a man at a Strip hotel while in town for a hearing on a previous theft incident.

Sarah Richards was arrested on Sunday, December 11, at the Aria Hotel after she allegedly stole a man's Rolex watch after trying to drug him in his hotel room.

Police say Richards tried to leave his room with the watch, but after security was called, they waved her down using their metal detector wand and found the watch in her vaginal area.

Scientists invent 1st "vagina on a chip"

Scientists invent 1st 'vagina-on-a-chip'

 published 3 days ago

The first vagina-on-a-chip replicates the cellular environment of the vagina.

Scientists have developed the world's first "vagina-on-a-chip," a small device that contains live human cells and replicates the cellular environment found inside the vaginal canal.

By adding bacteria to the device, aptly named the Vagina Chip, researchers can study how different microbes affect the health of the vagina, the team reported in a new study, published Nov. 26 in the journal Microbiome(opens in new tab). They can also test how different drugs and probiotics change the composition of the vaginal microbiome, the community of microorganisms living within the canal.

"The vaginal microbiome plays an important role in regulating vaginal health and disease, and has a major impact on prenatal health," first author Gautam Mahajan(opens in new tab), a former researcher at Harvard University's Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering, said in a statement(opens in new tab). "Our human Vagina Chip offers an attractive solution to study host-microbiome interactions and accelerate the development of potential probiotic treatments," which work by introducing beneficial bacteria into the vagina, said Mahajan, who now works at the organ-on-a-chip company Emulate, Inc. in Boston.

The Vagina Chip device measures only 1 inch (2.54 centimeters) long and contains donated cells from two women; the cells were collected from the lining of the vagina and from the connective tissue that runs beneath the lining, according to The New York Times(opens in new tab). These two types of cells sit on either side of a permeable membrane, which replicates the 3D structure of the vaginal wall.

The scientists allowed these cells to multiply for five days in the device before adding the sex hormone estradiol, a form of estrogen. The hormone changed which genes were switched "on" in the tissues and triggered the production of mucus, as would occur in vivo.

With their device complete, the team ran several tests with bacteria commonly found in the vagina, namely, several strains of Lactobacillus bacteria; studies suggest that these microbes make up more than 70% of a healthy vagina's microbiome, according to the Wyss Institute statement.

The researchers found that the Lactobacillus bacteria successfully produced lactic acid in the Vagina Chip, thus driving down the pH of the tissue inside. A healthy vagina typically has a pH of 4.5 or less, meaning it's acidic, and this acidity helps prevent the growth of harmful bacteria that could cause disease. In addition, adding the Lactobacillus bacteria reduced the number of inflammatory molecules circulating in the tissues.

Having run experiments with "good" bacteria, the team did the same with "bad" bacteria, meaning bugs associated with bacterial vaginosis (BV), a common vaginal infection caused by the overgrowth of specific bacteria. These bugs include Gardnerella vaginalis, Prevotella bivia, and Atopobium vaginae, and when introduced into the Vagina Chip, all three bacteria caused the pH of the device to rise along with the number of inflammatory molecules and damaged vaginal cells.

BV increases the risk of sexually transmitted diseases, such as chlamydia and gonorrhea, both of which can negatively affect future fertility by triggering a harmful inflammation, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention(opens in new tab) (CDC). If developed during pregnancy, BV also raises the risk that a baby will be born prematurely or at a low birth weight. The new vagina-on-a-chip could help scientists develop new and better treatments for BV, sexual health physician Achyuta Nori(opens in new tab) of St. George's, University of London, who was not involved with the study, told Scientific American(opens in new tab)

"This is an opportunity to bring women's health into the modern times, using modern technology," Nori said. The chip offers an advantage over testing therapies in lab animals like mice, whose vaginal microbiomes greatly differ from humans'; in addition, it's historically been difficult for drug developers to recruit human patients for BV treatment trials, partly due to patients' concerns over safety, experts told the Times.

That said, organ-on-a-chip technology does have its limitations, so it cannot perfectly capture all the factors that influence the human vaginal microbiome. But the Vagina Chip is a good first step towards further research.

I normally like Springsteen but this song doesn't do anything for me.  The line "he could throw that SPEEDBALL by you ..."  has always rankled me.

Someone tried explaining baseball to him but he had no personal experience.

The Phone Lady charges $480 per hour to help Gen Z and millennial workers overcome their fear of talking on the phone.

Smartphones can do lots of things — but plenty of people with them make very few, if any, actual phone calls.

That's left many younger workers lacking the confidence to speak effectively on the phone at work.

Mary Jane Copps said she spotted the rise of "phone phobia" 16 years ago and set up a consultancy called The Phone Lady to help companies improve their staff members' phone skills.

"Gen Z have never had the skills given to them," she told Insider. "In my generation, the phone was on the wall in everyone's house, and we were taught to answer it and make calls at a young age.

"Now we have several generations that were never taught anything about talking on the phone, and people have removed phones from their homes."

Alison Papadakis, the director of clinical psychological studies at Johns Hopkins University, told Insider that phone phobia was more common in younger generations.

"Gen Z and millennials have a lot less experience talking on the phone because texting and instant messaging have been the primary communication mode for their generation," she said. "Since they have a lot less experience talking on the phone, they have less comfort with it. That sets up people who are vulnerable to social anxiety to have anxiety in that situation."

Copps charges $480 an hour for one-on-one coaching and $365 for 30-minute webinars as part of a seven-part program. For corporate workshops, the daily rate is $3,500. Insider verified these figures using redacted invoices supplied by Copps.

Many of Copps' clients are in the financial sector or startups. Her first step is working out why someone's anxious about phone calls.

"A common fear is what if someone asks me a question and I don't know the answer," she said. "I often say, 'For the next three days, I don't want you to text anyone,' and tell them to call their friends and family.

"If they're not even used to talking on the phone to their mother, then the process is so scary. So I can't say I'm going to make them call prospective clients, as they would just fall apart — we start with their family or someone they know."

Improvising on a call can be scary, so her approach involves using role-play. "If people aren't ready to answer the phone, I set up a time where I randomly call them throughout the day and have practice conversations," Copps said.

"You can't build a relationship by email because it's not back and forth and you're not hearing each other's tone of voice," she said, adding that phone calls are "crucial in order to express interest and enthusiasm."

It’s gotta be worth at least 9 figures to make it worth the risk.
