I’m an old and my baby bro and I are considering going to Vegas for the 2026 Super Bowl as neither of us have been there for that event.  This wasn’t on the bucket list, but is under consideration.  We have a hostess and, normally, get our rooms comped at the V/P.  Don’t know if that would extend to the Super Bowl.  Should we pursue this or is it folly?

Sure. If you have an established relationship with the casino it doesn’t hurt to ask about a future comp. They probably offer package deals including game tickets.

I assume you mean to watch it in Vegas since they are not hosting the actual game.

Vegas Super Bowl weekend is pretty fun, all the casinos will have parties some will be invite only and others you can just get a ticket for usually they have open bar/food. I would reach out to your host for sure to see what you can get into.

Thinking about it, conferences and conventions are the lifeblood of Vegas. The only reason I sort of enjoyed the place on my last trip was the private parties where I was able to drink copious amounts of Pappy for free. Unless someone is footing the bill for a Vegas trip, you shouldn't go.

We just got back from a long ass weekend. I'll let @closetojumping give his own thoughts, but in general...meh.

The food, was fucking fantastic, as always. Piero's still has it's fastball, although who knows how long that will last. Dan's in the Fontainebleau was fucking exceptional. And the Casino was nice, I'd consider staying there over the Aria, because it's new and nice and you take a ride everywhere you're going anyway.

The Aria...it's fine, but it needs a fucking facelift. The plates around the window buttons and lights literally fell off and was unattached. The sports book needs new, fully digital TV screens. It's clean, and all, but it's dated. One of the higher end casino's should never look dated for long, imo.

Wizard of Oz at the Sphere was expensive, but worth the price of admission. Real cool.

Other than that, our group might be done with Vegas. We'll see. When I got in, I ordered a double jack and diet coke, a double makers, and a red bull, from the bar by the Aria sports book. 92 dollars, before gratuity. The service by the hostess at the Aria book where we paid for seats, was shitty and inconsistent with the information we got from our concierge host. Just expensive and stale and inept from a city and hotel that are supposed to be built on hospitality, there certainly didn't seem to be a lot of fucking hospitality.

Everyone else's complaints about vegas Ive read here and elsewhere seem pretty accurate.

EDIT: Also, everyone should be sure to ask CloseToJumping on his experience with a cab driver who gaslit the fuck out of him.

Yeah, we just did a weekend at the Aria for the Eagles show at the Sphere on Saturday night.

The Aria is....fine.  It's dated, and definitely starting to look a bit run down in places.  And on our floor/hallway, some assholes smoked a shitload of weed in their room, and it stunk up the whole hall for the entire weekend.  Our room was fine, but the hallway stank.

Food was great, across the board, although we need to break out of our routine -- we keep going back to places we love, like Lotus of Siam, Din Tai Fung, and Bouchon.  We actually prefer staying at the Palazzo (it's usually better-located for the concerts we come to town for), but the price difference was like $300 a night, and that just seemed stupid.

LV sure didn't seem dead to us, plenty of crowds, but then, losing 5-10% really doesn't thin the crowds much, it just crushes the profit margin.

We had brunch on Friday at Bouchon, and it still crushes it. Just ridiculously good. We haven't ventured to Lotus of Siam in a couple years, we opted for Bazaar Mar on our free night. That was...one of the most overpriced meals I've ever had in Las Vegas for what we got. Pretty disappointing from a Jose Andres joint. If you go avoid the tasting menu like the fucking plague.

One funny thing, is there was the Marine Corps formal ball or something on...Thursday night? Think it was Thursday. Anyway, I'm riding down the elevator with these two young marines, full dress, and one of their dates. Couldn't have been older than 22. She's drinking from a cup, and offers a sip to the other guy who isn't her date. "Want a sip of my roadie?" He, as one does, asks what's in the cup? "Oh, it's mountain dew and tequila." He looks confused. I can't help myself and go "A classic pairing." He's too young to know better, and looks at me and goes "really?" to which I respond "Absolutely fucking not" and execute my perfectly timed my exit from the elevator.

Appreciate the advice on Bazaar Mar, we've thought about it.  And Bouchon is kind of a "must" for us.  The meticulously perfect execution of simple things is amazing.  The quiche florentine is one of the most amazing things I've eaten.  Keller's scrambled eggs are what I try to imitate at home.

I am just going to pile on that we had a very disappointing experience at Bazaar Mar as well. I still love his other places but thats a skip for me now.

Y’all think Aria is dated, check out the Cosmo. Stayed there 4 nights last week and the place is looking rough. Not only that, cleaning staff is mailing it in. Dirty sock in the sofa and peanuts all over the chairs when I checked in.

Posted

Cosmo rooms are looking tired yes - same furniture, wallpaper etc as 15 years ago it feels like. The restaurant area - Scarpetta etc and Chandelier Bar are still excellent though.

Resorts World wasn't my thing. Liked Carver Steak and some of the food court spots but the place is too spread out and I'm not crazy about being that far north on the strip.

Bellagio is still my go to - classy, center strip location that has stayed true to its roots.

The good news for the Cosmo is that the rooms are getting a refresh next year. I’ll definitely go back once they’ve completed that.

I agree with you on Bellagio. Service is still good and it’s stood the test of time.

For the first time this trip, I played some at the Wynn and was really impressed with the property and service. I’d like to stay there next time, but it’s hard to pass up all the free comps with MGM.

That’s good to know. Hadn’t heard that yet, but they sure needed it last time I was there.

The Wynn properties are the gold standard for service. Room rates run higher in general but they never want to drop service levels. MGM will get around to updating all of their properties, they don’t want too many rooms out of service at once for upgrades.

Last few times we've either stayed at the Wynn or Nobu at Caesar's. Been wanting to try Cosmo for one of the rooms with a balcony overlooking the strip. Are those hard to get and price-wise about the same as a regular room at Wynn?

Posted

Those Cosmo terrace view and wraparound rooms are easy to get. I think the novelty has worn off.

I don't stay at the Wynn/Encore but that does appear to be the good standard for quality alongside the Bellagio.

When I first went to Vegas at 21 in '03 I walked through the bellagio and thought it was the most luxurious place I'd ever seen. Stayed there in 2022 and felt it was the best example of faux luxury I've ever seen. A hotel for people who wear Gucci slides.

When we walked through the lobby of the Venetian this past weekend on the way to brunch, it was clogged with people with their phones out, taking videos.  My wife and I were puzzled -- videos of what?  They were all recording the fake "italian" ceiling paintings.  WTF?

The closest most of those people will ever get to Italy is eating at an Olive Garden.

Much of it, yes. Honestly I prefer the fun everyman vibe and prime location of the linq over most of the the strip. Next time I'm skipping the strip and staying downtown.

We have had countless trips to Vegas, and we didn't stay at Wynn until '21.   We went to Caesars in '22, but ever since, it's either Wynn or Encore.  And until we quit going to Vegas 1-2 times a year or something comes along and tops it, it's going to be Wynn or Encore from now on.

There's too many reasons to list, but this is easily the top.

After my last Vegas experience, I'm sticking with my yearly Lake Charles trip in the Fall with a few buddies. Leave Houston on a Thursday at 10am, arrive in LC and play 18 holes of golf for  $50-75, check in to my clean and perfectly acceptable Golden Nugget room that is around $40 (if not free). Shower, get a steak dinner and hammer some bourbon, hit the tables until around 3-4am, get up at 8am and back in Houston by noon Friday.

Easy, inexpensive, and fun 24 hour trip.

Going next month (UT-GA weekend) and staying at Circa, I think.  We are all almost or just past 50, so this is a sportsbook (Circa is just spectacular for this), poker, craps, trip and maybe catch a concert if one is in town (2 years ago we caught Built to Spill and The Hold Steady randomly playing the same gig, which was awesome as I love THS and BtS is one of my buddy's all time favorites).  But overall, we look and play the part of dork dads on vacation.

I rarely spend any time at good restaurants on these trips (and it's been two years), because degenerate, but want to find a spot this time for one excellent meal. What's a favorite steakhouse where we can come out of the sports books or off the tables and walk into with our untucked short sleeve Poncho, Vuori chinos, baseball cap, and ON Clouds (you know, the West Austin dad uniform) without looking like complete slobs.  I figure we'll need to go to the strip unless someone can convince me on V&A or Andiamo because they are downtown.

This is the way. - Biloxi is similar and I’m there to gamble and get wild with the boys…

The price of entry for a similar Vegas trip is easily 5X these days so the desert can kick rocks (outside of work trips) until they refocus on service.

Andiamo is good, as is Barry’s. Can you do better? Sure but being where you already are at has a lot of value. Get the meatball starter at Andiamo.

I sure miss the Veal al' Aldo at Andiamo. They took it off the menu about 5 years ago and it breaks my heart.

Dude, the steakhouse at Circa is just fine. The bartenders are also slutty and hot. I forget the restaurant name, but should be easy to find. I went with my wife for a change of pace from the strip a while back. Not our thing, but it would fit your thinking.

Just snagged tickets for Eagles in the Sphere in late February 2026.  Staying at The Palazzo.  It is our first trip to LV.  We will arrive Friday afternoon, see the Eagles Saturday night, and head home Sunday after brunch.  We will not gamble - no issue with it, but not our thing.  So, we need meals and Saturday day entertainment.  Am open to seeing the Wizard of Oz at the Sphere Saturday afternoon.  Otherwise, seems like we should get a car and go to Red Rocks and Hoover.   We want at least one really nice meal, but not like Joël Robuchon $1,000+ nice.  And, we are not really into steakhouses.  So, more Italian, French, Seafood, Sushi.  From the last 10 or so pages of this thread and a Facebook food group, I've made a list of Bouchon, Javier’s, Piero’s, Ferraro’s, Andiamo, Sparrow+Wolf, Other Mama, Lotus of Siam, and Mon Ami Gabi (brunch).

Any restaurants you would add to, or remove, from the list?  Best suggestion (on or off the list) for the big dinner?  If we rent a car for Saturday, anything to add to Red Rocks and Hoover for area attractions?

We stayed at the Wynn for Phish, and post-show, this was a killer meal/drink situation.

I opted to go to the Wizard of Oz with @SydneyCarton and another buddy while everyone else did other stuff after our Friday brunch at Bouchon. A couple of things pertaining to the last page+.

1) I hadn’t seen the Wizard of Oz since childhood and I had low expectations. Just wanted to see what the hubbub about the Sphere was all about. I was personally blown away. It’s a sensory explosion and the story/film is still terrific, to boot. It’s 75 minutes and that is perfect. Get the 300 or 400 section seating for tickets if you do it. Lower than that missed some experience.

2) I used to push for our group to go to Mon Ami Gabi for brunch when we’d visit. It’s fallen off. Bardot and Bouchon blow it out of the water for brunch these days. If you’re in the Venetian, don’t overthink it. Take Bouchon, make sure you at least try the scrambled eggs and whatever soup they have that day, and never look back.

Yeah, the French toast at Bardot is fucking unreal.

It’s been a running joke with our group for years. Take a murse or fannypack to the brunch and then tuck away what you don’t eat of the french toast loaf into that, and then just randomly pull it out and snack on it while at the craps or blackjack table later in the day. If I saw someone do that, I’d likely have a cardiac arrest on the spot from an explosion of laughter.

My wife ordered it one time. We had deviled eggs to start and I had a benedict of some sort. She knocked down about 1/8 of the french toast and asked me to help. I think I took down another 1/8 and we asked for the check. No regrets. It’s delicious anyway.

I don’t think Javier’s is worth a trip to the Aria by itself if you’re staying at the palazzo. Just my two cents.

Bouhchon sounds like a given. Piero’s for your Italian if you go that way.

A retired Vegas local I know posted his 2 night comp report at Ellis Island on another board.
Thought you high rollers might like to see how a “little guy” rolls on the cheap in Vegas.
He says he’s a retired helicopter pilot and has lived there for about 10+ years…..

Quote

I got the special email. Free shit! I am there! Make the call. Book the luxury room.  Fill the cooler with booze. Pack some snacks jack. Grab a Lyft. Boom! Hello paradise. Free Play. Free Room. Free food. Free booze. Like it was 10 years ago. Seems like only a moment ago...

Scored a first floor room. Facing the casino. By a stairwell. Easy to stumble back to. T.V. works. A.C. works. Toilet flushes. Fridge. Safe. Coffee maker. Do not disturb sign. No bugs. Clean sheets. Perfect! The debauchery starts.

Comped night 1. I had a little urge to gamble. But I had a bigger urge for...Drunken Sex! And I am not going to go off on a trip report about that.  I had a great night. One of those ones where you keep saying whew and damn over and over lol. Even after she leaves. The sex was fantastic!  Some of the best porn videos I ever rented. Ha!  No I really really got my freak on.  Bow Chica Bow Wow! I thought about hitting the casino afterwards. But no. Just relax and enjoy the night. Get some sleep.

Day 2 of Comp. Time to play. Who wants breakfast? 2  cups of coffee and a bottle of water and I am a gambling mean machine lol. I got my ass across the parking lot to the casino.  I have like 20 free drink coupons so I sat down and had a few in one of the bars.  The Hefeilweisson or however you spell it. Great beer. Did you all know they tore the brewery out to make room for the expansion that Ellis has been going through for waaaay to long now? All the beer is brewed up in St. George Ut. by Silver Reef Brewing Company and trucked in. Boo! It is just not the same. Anyway it was noon. They switch the Craps table minimums from $5 to $10 at 11 a.m. They still do grandfather in so that is cool. But $10 does not bother me. Too much lol! Problem is. They only have one Craps table now. Because of the construction. And it was full. So I went over to old sparky. The MegaBucks slot machine.  Plugged my players card in. Stuck a hundie in. Bet $20. A few spins later I was up $60. Now what? I cashed out.  Not a slot player. Looked over at the Craps table. Stick right had opened up. Almost my favorite spot. I ran over there and practically threw myself on the rail! Bought in for $500 and started drinking and playing seriously in both arenas. It got pretty foggy  eventually. Casino fog. Not outside fog like in San Francisco Bay lol. The booze and gambling lust kicked in. Same old same old. The crew was giving me shit. I was busting their chops right back. My favorite cocktail waitress was working. ( My greeting to her is always quit looking at my ass!)  The table was choppy. I was slowly losing. I do remember buying in for another $200. About halfway through my shift. I could not get a heater going. I only could make a couple of points and that would be it.  Nobody could get hot. I would love to write about some of the characters that shoot dice at tables in Vegas. But it would be a novel. The one highlight of the night for me anyway was this. You know when your getting tired playing whatever in Vegas and you start glancing around and people watching?  Well. It was that time of the night for me. So I was looking across at the Roulette wheel and I see a Pit Boss who kind of looks familiar.  I am sure I know this old man. So I ask Jess who is running our table. Is that Pete? And he smiles and says yes it is. I  could not believe it!  Pete was 92 years old when I met him and sharp as a tack. He was/might be a floor supervisor. But he disappeared. I heard he fell down a flight of stairs. (Yeah Right) But here he was . I had to leave the game and go shake his hand.  So I went over there. Hi Pete! He is now 97! The Ellises let him run a few games twice a week for 4 hours. How about that?! 97! And he looks good. Sometimes I wonder if these old time pit bosses take a sip of embalming fluid everyday because they never seem to age. And they always have a full head of hair. It is true! So I knew Pete would not know who I was. But I shook his hand and asked him who is the best baseball player in history? And without missing a beat he smiled and his eyes lite up and he says Joe DiMaggio. ( I used to tease him about the Yankees )  And that is when I knew that in a way he remembered me and that is one of the many reasons why I love Las Vegas. God I got teary eyed.

So. Back to the gambling. I hung in there. All night. Finally a old guy bought in and knew what he was doing and got the table going. I figured it was now or never. I started betting greens$(25 chips) plus. And he did so well i actually almost dug myself out of the losing hole i was in. I was $100 short. So here is where fatigue booze and boredom kick in. I put $100 in the field! A $5 horn bet. Shooter rolls 11. $136 on one roll. At this point I just want to go to sleep. I threw all my money away with stupid sucker bets instead of coloring. I can't explain it. I got a food comp. Went over to the Cafe and almost got into shit over nothing because I was to drunk to understand what the staff was trying to tell me. I remember telling myself that I was drunk and to STFU. I know I did not swear or flip anyone off. When the manager who had been called over told me there is no need to be rude. I realized she was this close to calling security on me. So I just left lol!

Eight and a half hours people. That is how long I was at that craps table. I kid you not.  Do I regret it? Nope. I got a good night's sleep in the comped room. Had 2 coffees and a water the next morning. Tipped the maids and left the building! See you in a week or so Ellis!
