Thanks. I've rearranged this list quite a few times, including before posting it here.  It's a subjective thing, but I've put more thought into it than the topic deserves over the years.

Moonraker: I was so over Jaws by the time I saw it.  The Jaws love in space killed it pretty hard for me.  Didn't love the villain.  Just didn't care for it.

I agree that Thunderball generally is overrated.  But it's not bad either.  It got an Oscar for the underwater fight scene.  Great locale.  Cool plot.

Moonraker was ridiculous.  I can handle Bond being competent with a lot of equipment.  Helicopter/airplane pilot....okay.   But a competent astronaut?

Watched Spectre last night and enjoyed it more the second time.

I had watched Skyfall the night before and definitely enjoyed it more the second time.

Casino Royale was so fantastic I loved it immediately, but the other two had to grow on me.

Thank you for giving On Her Majesty's Secret Service the respect it deserves. Too many people overlook a very good movie.

How many people have seen the original Casino Royale?

And a very good Bond. Lazenby would have ended up being a good successor to Connery had his agent not screwed his mind up. He should have done at least one more.

Diamonds Are Forever is a guilty pleasure of mine. It’s so ridiculous but I can’t help but love it. Connery in the short pink tie is so unlike anything Bond would ever wear but I watch it anytime I come across it.

Same. I like all of Connery’s Bond movies. Diamonds has cheese but it also has Jill St John and Lana Wood as Bond girls, a Blofeld, Jimmy Dean and Mr Kidd and Mr Wint were weird David Crosby-looking henchmen/assassins. It’s also the only Bond movie that ever takes place in Vegas????

This could have gone in a couple of different threads, or had its own, but nah

On September 7th, I reported that Christopher Nolan had been in discussions with James Bond producer Barbara Broccoli to direct the next 007 movie.

This source of mine has been incredibly accurate in the past and so I had no reason to doubt them. They went on to add that the main issue right now seems to be the amount of creative freedom Nolan would need for the film.

Quote

The deal being negotiated would be for Nolan to direct two Bond films, writing both of them as well. Still no word yet on who the actor playing Bond would be, but some encouraging signs are pointing towards Aaron Taylor-Johnson taking over the role. Taylor Johnson also starred in Nolan’s “Tenet.”

The Bond/Nolan rumors are now back again. A reader sent me something, from a person ingrained in Bond intel. This individual was right about Taylor-Johnson screen-testing before it had even been reported, and leaked the “No Time to Die” production dates.

Quote

Here are the key points they make:

EON and Amazon are pushing for Nolan and that he's on board, in principle, unless his need for creative freedom isn’t met. There are sticking points to be ironed out in terms of tone that might scuttle things though.

Quote

EON wants a full reboot for the modern era with Nolan wanting to make adaptations of the Ian Fleming novels, in period settings, that stick close to the original source material. It’s also unclear as to what what Amazon wants (apart from money).

The goal is to get Nolan to do 2-3 films and then have him executive produce going forward. EON and Amazon are putting “all of their eggs in one basket” for Nolan due to the fact that he wants the job — he delivers critically and commercially successful films, and he's one of the few directors out there who can put butts in seats on his name alone.

Nolan writing/directing a couple of James Bond movies in the original period settings?

And likely overcomplicate the plot.  Hey, I'm gonna 100% see it regardless, but we gotta be honest here.

Bond tracks down a time machine and travels back in time to create a decoy time machine that sends Ernst Blofeld to a time before Blofeld had heard of a time machine, thereby stopping Spectre.

Sean Connery - Goldfinger
George Lazenby - On Her Majesty’s Secret Service
Roger Moore - The Spy Who Loved Me
Tim Dalton - License to Kill
Pierce Brosnan - Goldeneye
Daniel Craig - Skyfall

My only quibble would be From Russia with Love for Connery. It was the closest of the originals to the book and I thought it was a very compelling story. Plus Tatiana Romanova with the choker for the win.

But it’s hard to argue with Goldfinger as it set the formula - for better or worse - for the next couple decades.

People bag on QoS for reasons that include its fantastical plot.  "An evil corporation exploiting Bolivian water?!  Come on."  Well...

The Cochabamba Water War,[2] also known as the Bolivian Water War, was a series of protests that took place in Cochabamba, Bolivia's fourth largest city, between December 1999 and April 2000 in response to the privatization of the city's municipal water supply company SEMAPA. The wave of demonstrations and police violence was described as a public uprising against water prices.[3]

The tensions erupted when a new firm, Aguas del Tunari – a joint venture involving Bechtel – was required to invest in construction of a long-envisioned dam (a priority of Mayor Manfred Reyes Villa), so they had drastically raised water rates.

QoS is a good movie. A good reprieve from the "bad guy wants to destroy the world" tropes of the usual Bond film.

i bag on QoS because it is some of the worst writing I've ever seen in a high budget movie.  not coincidentally, it was during a writer's strike.  it is a shit movie.

Agreed-it’s like they pulled out a Roger Moore Bond script for lack of an updated alternative.

Connery  From Russia with Love

Moore  View to a Kill

Brosnan  Die Another Day

Craig  Skyfall

Skyfall for the overall win.  Honorable Mention to From Russia with Love

This matches my list perfectly.

As far as the Nolan article, he must have really knocked things off his bucket list the last few years if he’s circling back to Bond.  He’s basically already done Bond as Batman, time travel Bond, and a heist Bond movie.

Fucking hated proximity mines.

He's too ripped these days to pull it off.  Not that James Bond can't be ripped/a badass (see Craig), but I don't know how it would work in a 1950s/1960s-style setting.  That's a bias towards Sean Connery (who was well-built, but you didn't see it when he had The Tux or a suit on).

Imagine this in a tuxedo or 1960s-styled suit:

Fuck that. Armie Hammer is an American and would probably mangle a British accent.  Only American I know that can pull that off is Gillian Anderson.  Well, Christian Bale can pull off an English accent.

I like Nolan but not for Bond. As someone said, he’ll make it confusing, and I think, probably go overboard with special effects.

same concern i have

Live and Let Die is awesome because it’s Bond Does 70s Blacksploitation. It is unique in that regard and absolutely crazy in it’s over the top hokiness.

Worst all time for me is A View to A Kill. Old Roger Moore was rough. And Christopher Walken just couldn’t save the maximum eye-rolls-per-minute this one induced.

A View to a Kill is not very good. And I'll sit through Moonraker, ridiculous as it is. (Dr Goodhead was hot AF.)

The point being that I'm such a fan of the franchise that I'll sit through the less-than-stellar ones.
