Things seem to be going quite well for Joe Biden

I’m not 1% or greenspoint. If I didn’t mention that I meant to. Sue me. I’m hoping to get there, but even if not, there are changes in Biden’s proposed tax plan that will impact me, primarily the removal of step up basis.

I don’t want to pay more in tax, and I don’t want my employer to pay more in tax, so I won’t be voting for a president that is going to increase my taxes or my employers. Seems pretty straightforward and non controversial, but I’m sure you will have a problem with that and call me racist or a russian spy so 🤷‍♂️

And that's fair. Can you show me where in Biden's tax plan you or your employer would be taxed at a higher rate?

Do I believe that mankind has an impact at all on the atmosphere and climate change, sure.  I also don’t think farting cows means we need to ban the combustion engine in the next 15 years.

Do you think climate changed prior to man? Do you think it will change after man?

Do you think we need to make adjustments that we can control so that the food and water systems we rely upon can be minimaly impacted by the climate changes? Changes that are happening at a rate faster than previous historical climate phases. Changes that will push major cities to become underwater at some point and displace a large population worldwide. Even if it is just a natural event, we should do what we can to mitigate the negative consequences....don't you think?

Payroll tax increase and increase in tax rates for high wage earners. I work for a partnership where the owners are all over $400K so any increase in tax on them gets passed down through decreased comp/benefits for employees.

  • On a conventional basis, the Biden tax plan by 2030 would lead to about 7.7 percent less after-tax income for the top 1 percent of taxpayers and about a 1.9 percent decline in after-tax income for all taxpayers on average.

Now I certainly don’t blame them for this, but if you think the owners are just going to eat that increase in tax rate and not at least share that burden with their employees, you’re crazy.

Well, that's understandable, and your bosses are assholes. If they're making enough money over $400k to where that would cause a material change in their expenses, they don't need to pass that on to their employees. Your employer sucks.

If you and I were talking politics as strangers on the street (which would be weird because I don't talk politics to strangers in public), and you told me that's why you were voting for Trump, I'd say "oh, alright". There are some on this board who would argue with you until they're blue in the face, I'm sure, but I wouldn't be one of them. I think it's reasonable. I accept that a Trump presidency makes more sense for some people's wallet (mine included - not 1%, but an S-Corp that benefits from some rule changes), and I accept that not everyone has "their wallet" vs. "the welfare of others" balanced the same on their moral scale. I don't mean that as a shot, either. Your family has to eat.

Where you lose me is where you go off the deep end into the nonsense about Hunter Biden or whatever other bizarre and stupid Trump talking points the online right has embraced. Like, dude, you can just say "I'm voting for Trump because it's better for my bank account" and most people aren't going to give you shit about it. Why the cult nonsense?

Exactly. Just admit your bank account is the only thing that matters in determining your vote and move on. The desperate desire to come up with some other moral or ethical explanation just makes it obvious that you're embarrassed that your wallet outranks any moral principles you may have once had.

Capitalism/private SMB's are what stirs the drink in America.    Biden's tax plan is a side door path to socialism without having to give out hand jobs or ruffle feathers.

Common sense to pass it on, i don’t work for a charity, and they don’t run one. They have an expected rate of return on their time and investment, and if I work hard and smart, maybe I can be (more of an) asshole one day too!

Bank account isn’t the only thing I’m voting for, but I’ll leave it at that so I don’t derail this thread into Climate Change! Border Wall! etc.

Hopefully we can all come together and agree on getting rid of Tom Herman and getting some CUM!

Trump raised my taxes due to his idiotic tax bill that negated mortgage interest just to hurt “blue” states. Biden’s plan lowers them by negating this poor choice  You can fuck off because you’re just making up shit.

Sounds like you may be more versed in the that deduction than I am. How much mortgage interest were you paying?  My understanding is that the deduction for mortgage interest was actually pretty regressive and played a part in inflated home prices making it harder for low income families to buy their first home.

If you are saying the change to SALT deductions is unfair to those with abnormally high property tax payments then I guess that’s valid, sure. I’m sorry that your $1m 2 bedroom apartment in San Francisco carries a heavy property tax burden. At least you have prop 13!

Off topic, but how common is this? Is it getting more common? I used to think these kind of stories were mostly bullshit but as the topic has gained more currency multiple friends of mine have told me essentially the same story and it's always the same profile.

Very common! The first time it happened to me I was 25. My company moved me to a new city and put me up in an extended stay while I looked for a new place. I just couldn't take being in that place night after night so one day I headed out to a restaurant just to hit happy hour and mingle. I am talking to this couple. Late 20's, and out of nowhere he hit me with, "My wife has never been with a Black guy and we were thinking.....". Blew my mind! Then the next thing you know it was being asked quite frequently. Like every 3 to 4 months. I am not sure why. Guess I am just an approachable Black dude? Maybe it's the Grey Slacks tips I got from Snacks.

I can go into detail about what they are looking for, but that's not for the political board, as I have been asked some crazy stuff. However, the profile is almost always the same. Conservative looking couple. Guy seems like the country type on the outside, but......

We pay our staff a little bit more than the going rate. That’s not charity. It increases their productivity which increases our revenue. It increases their job satisfaction which improves their interactions with patients, so we get more word of mouth referrals, again meaning more revenue. And it leads to job loyalty so we have little turnover. It is very expensive to onboard and train new staff.

I can’t imagine going to my staff and saying sorry guys but with these new tax laws we are all going to have to do some belt tightening. That would be disastrous to my bottom line

Plus here are some other examples of how we pay indirectly. Vote to claw some of this back to the hundreds of millions of Americans who are paying for it each and every day:

First up: This is a recorded fact. Do Americans mind when Presidents stay active? Not at all. But this is the first time a President has made money off of his side gig.

Second: Can we haz unions? No? More money for our labor? No? Guess it sucks to our assmar?

Third: Stimulus check for Americans living on the razor thin edge is down to what now? $5.00 a day average? Senate is adjourned.

Finally:

Give me a break. Trump and the GOP are an economic disaster.

Know how I know you didn’t understand the post or can think critically?

Do you think a 10, 20 or 50 employee company and employer runs the their business the same way one that has 10,000, 20,000, or 100,000 people? Do you think they hire or look at turnover the same way?

And of course there is no memo that goes out that says guess what, we’re not paying the tax, you are, gotcha!!! It comes in the form of lower forecasted budget for variable compensation, merit raises etc and its spread out amongst the entire employee base which are all decided after partner distributions.

This is essentially the same as the “corporations don’t pay taxes” nonsense. It’s bullshit. In a market economy you can’t sustainably pass tax increases directly onto either your customers (in the form of higher prices) or your employees (in the form of reduced benefits or wages), and for the same reason: the market sets the clearing price for both, not your employer.

Oh, drama. The tax climate for business owners and high income earners has been getting progressively better for nearly 40 years on the backs of the middle class. A modest rollback the other direction isn’t socialism any more than that was.

So you believe in trickle down economics also since what ever happens to your employer gets passed down to you?  If we give the rich people in this country lots of extra money (via the tax code) they will in turn give their employees higher wages and create more jobs by hiring more people.   I work for one of the companies that had their taxes lowered and it saved them billions of dollars and I am still waiting for them to come to me (an employee) and pass that down to me with better compensation.  You know this economic theory has been debunked and didn't/doesn't work.  The rich people keep the money and invest for themselves or buy luxury items/real estate/etc... for themselves.  Biden's tax plan will actually personally hurt me economically but I have the intellect to understand that it is all for the greater good of this country.  If I have to pay a little more money so be it.  If that enables the US to provide better services for its people I think that was a good trade off on my part.  If a little bit of my money leads to more people having an ability to live a better life and that makes the country I live in a better place then the extra taxes were worth it to me.

I'd love to see the math where increased taxes on a few partners materially impacts the salary of 10,000 people.

If you have 20 partners that pull a million a year from the business that's 12 million in dollars taxed at Biden's new tax rate. That equals $264,000 in taxes. Spread across 10,000 people that's $26.40 per year or $1.01 per paycheck.

Biden's plan will have no material impact on your paycheck.

This is an example of how rich people get not-rich people to do their bidding at the voting booth. You're getting played. I'm not looking to go way down this path because I'm more of a "call stupidity out" guy and not a "shame you for disagreeing with me" guy. I just wanted to actually see the math.

your numbers are wayyyyyyy off. But I guess if it’s immaterial I can just send you a bill for reimbursement right? I learned very early on not to determine the value of a dollar for someone else unless I was willing to give them that dollar.

My experience is different. I don't see any practical way to pass on an increase in taxes. You pay the increases because you make more money. If you increase the amount of money you make (by shifting revenue from employees to partner distributions or salary), you pay more, not less, in taxes. Rather, if a partnership is faced with increased taxes, the best way to avoid the tax is to reinvest in the business rather than increase distributions.
