One of the reasons Japan and West Germany (and the rest of occupied Western Europe) became staunch allies after WWII - and stepped back from their generational resentments - was that the USA poured billions of dollars over quite a few years into rebuilding them and reintegrating their economies into the Western economic structure. Has anyone heard of any honest plans for that in Gaza, Trump Gaza Beach Resorts aside? Because if it doesn't happen, ain't nothing ever gonna change there. "Hey, we're not shooting at you any longer, enjoy the rubble!" It needs to be the West as well to build any sort of trust; middle eastern petrodollars are fine but if we want them to think there might be a better future, there needs to be hope that they can join that better future.

(and oh yeah, the West Bank is still a thing)

There’s a key different that I’m really close to putting my finger but it hasn’t quite come into focus yet….

@South Austin thanks for misspeaking because I’ve always lazily believed yes they have been fighting forever. I appreciate the posters who bring clarity to the situation. Thanks everyone

That Israel will just not let the Palestinians live in peace is infuriating. You would think seeing 6 million plus people of Jewish descent perish in World War II would be the thing that leads the Jews to attempt to find ways to connect with their neighbors and live a peaceful existence alongside them. Instead they have gone full on "we've got bigger and badder weapons and we'll kill Palestinians anytime we feel like it because there are no consequences for anything we do to them." It's sickening to me and I think most of the world that is watching the Palestinians civilians suffer so mightily.

About 2021/2022 timeframe political sociologists found we were back in the "Might is Right" mode of politics.

Politics is like fashion, I guess, in that what's old is new again and trends cycle back around every few decades.

Cunt reply.

Why don't any of you cunts state a position?

Do you mean Thomas Sowell, who says Trump is dangerous?   https://www.lenconnect.com/story/opinion/columns/2016/04/11/thomas-sowell-why-donald-trump/31990185007/

But, I have figured it out.  There was a long history of peaceful coexistence of Jews and Muslims in the Middle East before the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire and the western carve-up.  The carve-up led to as much or more strife between Muslims as between Muslims and Jews, and led to the rise of Islamic fundamentalism.  The creation of Israel threw a match into that powder keg.

Drive by opinion, but it seems like Bibi eventually realized what all of Donald’s “friends” eventually do: frog meet scorpion.  There is a reason why the American public don’t know the names of any of Trump’s oldest friends - there aren’t any.  Two assholes deserve each other.

This isn't it, the US made the boss call because it's politically convenient and an easy win for Trump. We could have done the same back in January or during the Biden administration.

I've seen several pieces that mention pretty much this exact plan was under consideration during the end of the Biden administration, but Bibi crawfished because he thought he'd get a better deal under Trump.

You might be right but, frankly, Bibi can't do shit about it if the President decides what is what. At the end of the day, we hold the cards, not Israel. There could have been so many fewer lives lost if we had put our foot down at the right time instead of giving them 2 years to destroy Gaza.

Bibi would've never agreed to it while Biden was still President. And Trump only forced Bibi to do it now because Bibi attacked some guys who were bribing Trump with a ton of money and probably threatened to cut that off.

He wouldn't have wanted to but it literally doesn't matter. You have infinite leverage over Israel to force him to agree. We can make them do anything we want, they can't afford to say no if the alternative is losing the infinite money spigot. The US government just doesn't generally have the desire or stomach to do it.

Like, I don't think people appreciate just how precarious their situation is from a fiscal standpoint. Their populace enjoys many social safety nets and things like free education and health care that we don't have in fucking America, directly as a result of our financial support. They can't even come close to being able to afford fighting wars on multiple fronts and keeping their society intact at the same time without us, that's just plain fact. Just the threat of losing all of their creature comforts would be enough for Israelis to start calling for Bibi's head more than they already do.

There was talk at the time turnip intervened, asking Bibi to halt any deals, as it would have helped Harris’ campaign. That talk wasn’t proven, nor disproven. turnip claimed he made no such ask, which means it absolutely happened.

A Republican presidential candidate played politics when lives were at stake?

I am shocked!

Yeah, read some things yesterday -- not really verified mind you -- that Biden had this same basic deal in place but Trump and Bibi met early last year and agreed they would both be better off if the peace deal wasn't made at that time.

They met last July at MAL. It was a big news story for 90 minutes.

What you are describing (if true, big IF) is helping me to understand how my Palestinian neighbor can dislike Trump but hate Biden.

I remembered they met. What I meant was I don't really know the people (or their bona-fides) who are saying Biden had a deal -- maybe even this exact deal -- in place last year before Trump/Bibi meeting to shelve the peace deal since it served as a wedge item for Trump's campaign.

Hear me out. Flagship Taco Bell.

Sounds like a real plan to me. AI grifting is how things are done in DC now.

A person with knowledge of the presentation, who requested anonymity in order to speak freely, said that it was created as a form of market research, demonstrating which companies could contribute to redevelopment rather than which ones had discussed or agreed to anything.

The presentation—which was first cited in July by the Financial Times and was published in full the next month by The Washington Post—was developed by the same people who proposed what would become the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), the primary entity distributing food and medical aid in Gaza. Doctors Without Borders has accused the GHF, which was founded earlier this year, of attempting to bypass the UN’s existing systems for aid distribution.
