I've got a different point of view on the entrenchment of fucked up "We're Texas" logic and when things will change than I guess @SydneyCarton and @Barbacoa and others on here. I've seen a weird confluence of relatively unrelated issues mash-up against each other regarding UT over the last 6 months. Like first hand. My view after being in the middle of all of it in some form is that I'm not sure the fucked-up mindsets from the administration, various UT staffs, and the higher-level boosters around the program aren't actually systemic and perhaps never going away barring something cataclysmic. We've done a ton of work on NIL related shit. I'm very proud of the genuine effort and outputs I've seen from people like us on this board and other like-minded individuals elsewhere. Largely, the work that has been done has been altruistic and aimed at helping Texas get competitive and stay there on the NIL end. No one has been trying to profit or curry favor as far as I know. However, at every turn in which any of this momentum across multiple initiatives has gotten people a seat at the table with significant power brokers, money people, or the admin, the net result has been "good luck to you guys, we can't help you, and we really, frankly, don't want to help you or see any of this work out. But hey, let us know if in spite of all of this, you figure it all out and really become a force that we then need to reckon with or help claim credit for! Good luck with aaaaaallllll that." In addition, the staff has zero interest in helping anything happen, but, hey, they'd also really love for something to happen! Same is true for Crystal and his crew. That guy, having witnessed shit, isn't very intelligent and doesn't want to see anything change, and also doesn't think there's a problem. Ironically, he can gladhand like a motherfucker if he needs a new practice bubble or softball facilities. I guess those are easier to directly claim credit for though, so it makes sense. Being an outsider and now witnessing things in the SEZ, it's stunning. You go to these games and functions, and all these people want and need is access and influence so that they can show their neighbors pictures with CDC or Peter Gardere or Derrick Johnson. They do not care about winning football games. At all. I have now seen them behave up close and personal through a devastating loss at home and they all seemed to have a wonderful fucking time. I mean, it's a fucking party, with an atmosphere like that of the one held for Harvey Dent in Bruce Wayne's penthouse ahead of the Joker's arrival. The game was a social event for socialites and their families to rub shoulders with one another while some young people tossed a ball around downstairs on the lawn. In other words, these people aren't fans. They're patrons. They expect attention and access, but they do not give one fuck about results.23 points

I don't know why Nahlin wants to dance around it like he's got some crazy inside info. It's widely acknowledged that there are several guys at DE/DT and at CB/NB that were tempted to portal after spring and talked down. It's also well known that more guys have joined that side of the fence than have gotten on board with this staff. This defensive staff has a personnel problem and the perception among not only the current players on the roster but among trainers and recruits (as well as staffs recruiting against Texas) is that Texas isn't playing it's best 11. You can talk at length about culture, effort, and attitude and yada yada but you can't instill a "true culture of competition" and at the same time reward effort over actual result - cutting off one's nose to spite one's face. Prime example - Jimmy Johnson had an actual true culture of competition and winning in his locker rooms at The U and at Dallas. Attitude, effort, and buy-in mattered but Jimmy also knew that Orwell was right everyone is created equal but some are more equal than others. Emmitt Smith notoriously skipped tons of practices and held out to avoid the off-season grind. Does anyone here think he was a locker room problem for his attitude and effort? Does anyone think Johnson's culture was negatively impacted by Smith? Does anyone think Johnson should've played Sherman Williams over Emmitt Smith? No. Competition means the best guy wins. You can do this ad nauseam with every single sport and it's best coaches and players. Ideally we'd all want the guys to be VY and all 105 guys challenging to working harder than anyone else but that's not reality. It's a hell of a lot easier to hardline it when your depth chart actually features actual depth but when you set your culture by playing full on fucking spares because they give effort - you aren't building a culture of competition - you are building a culture of compliance. Quite simply you aren't teaching Alfred Collins (and to that end the entire roster) that effort matters by playing Jett Bush over him - because Bush at 100% effort is still not better than Collins at 75% effort - you are teaching that being his guy matters more than being good. Ditto with Foster, Brockermeyer, Thornton. It's not teaching competition that's teaching compliance. Kitan, Jaylan Ford, Adimora, Gbenda, T'Vondre, Barron. Here's the great secret to coaching at a Blue Blood vs. coaching anywhere else. Steve Sarkisian wasn't hired to install his offense and Kwiatkowski wasn't hired to install his defense - they were hired to win football games. There is no "wait and get his guys in and get the system in place" at a blue blood. You don't get 5 patient years. Win. That's the job.16 points

No, he didn't. It wasn't televised anywhere, not even in Vegas. It wasn't on PPV. The video that I posted is from the UNLV production team. They didn't even know they had it. It only surfaced when UNLV created a Year in Review recap (it's branded a John Robinson Film...lulz) of their 3-8 team that year. The audio is from the UNLV radio feed mixed into the field level camera that captured the play. Over time, the lore of the play grew & grew. People had heard about what happened in 1999, but how could a play like that not make a single ESPN highlight (or lowlight) reel? Because it wasn't aired. Kinda like the game where Wilt Chamberlain scored 100 points. Wilt said that over the years he'd had at least a million people tell him they were there at the game for his amazing feat. And another 5 million told them they watched it on TV. Except of course it wasn't aired. The only people who watched Baylor choke that game away in unbelievable fashion were at Floyd Casey stadium on 9/11/99. And since @closetojumping was in Vegas he certainly didn't watch it. So CTJ--rather than just mentioning the dumbfuckery of Steele and Baylor in losing--claims that he saw it, assumedly on a massive sports book screen. And then CTJ goes one farther: Man, that video must be awesome. I'm sure it must be all over YouTube. Except it isn't. Because it doesn't exist. Oh yeah, Steele was a wreck and did say he wanted to "set a tone", blah blah blah. But the only thing that CTJ was likely vomiting over in Vegas in '99 was splitting a pair of tens at a $2 Black Jack table at Slots of Fun.7 points

But it's not. Do you honestly think that Joe Bob in bumbfuck, has any fucking clue about a ship channel and dell and nasa and southwest airlines and american airlines and vibrant tourism and international cities and world renowned universities and one of the largest economies in the world ? Here's a fucking clue, he doesn't. He only cares that CRT isn't taught in his goddamned schools, he can't be told to mask up, basically, you're dealing with 1 year old children here, in your Republican primaries. The lowest of the low. Functionally the worst of society, are in charge.7 points

Bag games WILL be irrelevant with the NIL. Too many ways to do it legally now. Why give a kids uncle $80k in poker chips at Harrahs when you could instead just give him $80k to tweet about your shitty car dealership. Anyone that says the NIL isn’t the great equalizer doesn’t understand the NIL and what it can accomplish. And with some help, a little luck and the right people buying in, Texas won’t be left behind. I can personally assure you of that7 points

Somebodys been paying attention to American exceptionalism propaganda. We dont have open borders. We dont have anywhere near the greatest freedoms in the world. IMO our biggest problem is our own attitudes and culture. Those listed countries aren't nearly as riddled with Puritanical culture and shame as Americans are. Those countries' cultures tend to value family and a lkfe balance while American culture is all about promoting materialism and overworked corporate culture. Our hard line prohibition stances on vices mixed with that materialism is a toxic recipe for burnout, stress, and being allured towards that which is forbidden.7 points

Here is some good context for Steve Sarkisian as a head coaching hire. https://sports.usatoday.com/ncaa/salaries/football/coach Top 15. Not exactly lighting the cfb world on fire. The reality is the second we hired him many tempered their expectations. There is a group of guys that are running things and they have a vision for the future. In the short term, its SEC centric. In the medium/long term, its a 32 team premier league separated from the NCAA. So I wouldnt get too caught up in Texas going to the SEC. Its just a preview. Urban Meyer told it to us straight. We arent ready to win. College football left us behind. The regional powers around us are way ahead. Our administrative issues are indicative of an organization that doesnt "get it". Even if we paid him higher than anyone else, the work he would have to do wouldnt be worth it. He basically said UT is a really cool old house that he has always wanted to live in, but the costs of just bringing it up to modern standards dont make sense for him at this point. So what do we do? We hire an SEC guy (kind of) with an SEC staff (so we thought). We struck out on Muschamp and Odom and I cant even remember who else. If it felt like PK came out of left field its because he did. I actually dont hate the hire, but it was far from what we set out to do, and the results have been.......not great. What personally pissed me off the most though, is getting good information that Sark was really surprised at the lack of alum support he has at Texas. He got to find out what Meyer already told us. And without being too dramatic, I have a pretty big fucking burr under my saddle to let him know that as our coach, he has some shooters out there. That has little to do with Sark, and a lot to do with the idea that we have to start building for the future or we will keep stepping on our dicks with retread coaches or wannabes.7 points

I always come back to these two charts. After WWII, with the US economy booming, income gains were shared rather equally no matter your economic percentile. The rich were still rich and getting richer, they were still better off than the middle class, who was in turn better off than the poor. This wasn’t socialism, it was America. Then the Reagan republicans came along with their trickle down bullshit, and wealth inequality skyrockets. as your income increases, your wealth increases and the compounding effect of that year after year exacerbates the disparity. For the families in the bottom 50%, they struggle to get by, pay their medical bills, mortgage, child care , etc...at the end of the year there's not a lot (if any) left over to save. Stuck in neutral. For top 10% totally different story. They build wealth. Heres the results over just a 15 year time frame: Yr 0 - the bottom 50% have 2.1% of the total pie (which is pathetic in its own right), the top 1% have 27.8% Yr 15 - the bottom 50% now have 1.9% of the total pie the top 1% have 32.4% The bottom 50%'s relative share has shrunk by just under 10%, while the top 1%'s share has grown by 16.5%....in just 15 years. This shit will not fix itself. If it hasn't trickled down by now, it aint gonna trickle down. The continued concentration of wealth amongst the top echelon can only continue for so long, until shit gets really f'n ugly. This country will implode. Its heading that direction. There is only one way to fix it. I can appreciate some of the problematic aspects of the wealth tax, but we gotta do something. Taxing the wealthy at north of 60% for income tax isn’t anti American, that’s what we did for 35 fucking years after WWII when the country was booming. The most frustrating part is you have poor slapdicks carrying the water of the GOP and their tax cuts for the wealthy, I guess out of some misguided fantasy that they too might become the next Bezos, Musk, etc... Meanwhile they post gofundme bullshit on message boards begging to pay off debt before they get married. We're a goddamn Idiocracy, and our current “Ouch, my balls “ is today’s political theatre. The 1% don't give a fuck who's in power, as long as they keep their riches. Fuck everyone else, its never enough.6 points

The Onion is so fucking good at this. PLANO, TX—In a purported effort to stop the rise of woke, leftist Critical Race Theory in the classroom, a local school district issued a decision Thursday censoring all of The Adventures Of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain except for its copious use of the n-word. “This move will allow educators to focus on the key elements of an American classic without fear of trafficking in the novel’s harmful themes of compassion and racial equality,” said superintendent James Appelbaum, telling reporters that the school board had voted unanimously to excise the book’s “dangerous lies” about the cruelties of slavery and that a journey of self-discovery on the margins of society could lay bare the immorality and hypocrisy of white institutions. “We’ve heard stories about caucasian students that are ashamed of their own whiteness, or think of themselves as inherently inferior to students of color, and we’re hopeful that reading a racial slur dozens and dozens of times over again will help fix this pernicious misconception.” Appelbaum added that the school board would next be considering a proposal to remove all of To Kill A Mockingbird except the section where the wrongfully-convicted Black man Tom Robinson is shot to death trying to escape prison.6 points

Some folks are going to sit here and whine about the bag game as some catch all. When folks bitch about alumni support, it's not just the bag game. It's the fact, that in general, the alumni don't fucking get ANYTHING. They're not lining up to build the death star for legal shit like the NIL either. It's legal. But they're clueless and slow to act and want to know how they benefit. And sadly, winning championships doesn't appear to be the top of their benefit list. So yeah, it's not the bags, it's just general booster malaise, and not wanting to demand excellence for whatever reasons exist. These are folks who still didn't think our facilities needed updating. And for those who dont think the bag game will diminish with the NIL, consider that a trainer or uncle fucking around and trying to leverage more payments and bags will actually become a THREAT to players signing and earning money in college through the NIL. There's a current Texas commit which is 100% proof of that right now.6 points
