Texas Recruiting Notes 2020

Would playing Rice in Houston at their stadium annually be the worst thing? They'd have a full stadium to profit off concessions, parking, whatever. That's an annual game in Houston. The OU game is obviously an annual game in Dallas. Play a marquee non-conference game, and the third non-conference game could be UTSA or UTEP. Is that too monotonous? I mean why play LaTech over UTEP?

I think it is good to get a game in other states but I love the idea of getting a permanent game against Rice. JFK made it a game that will always be talked about. Marquee non conference and a random non Texas G5 or maybe even a weaker P5 (yes it hurt when we sucked and lost but beating up a weaker P5 is more fun than on a G5 no one has ever heard of (that being said for purely strategery reasons we should just play 10 P5)) sounds good to me. I don't see any benefit from playing UTEP or UTSA. Just never schedule an FCS school and we're happy (other than maybe an HBCU so we can see their band).

Yeah just thinking of including system schools. I think it's foolish not to be playing in Houston every year. If you want to counter aggy and those that don't understand A/C tech, you need to have a presence there I think. There's too much talent there to not prioritize Houston

Texas should play a Louisiana school every year for recruiting purposes.

Y'all out here saying playing UH is anything but a lose-lose situation lol.

I see the practicality of playing a UT school every year, and yet for no reason I like playing random OOS schools. It's fun telling schools like LSU and Bama that we fuck with other states' second tier.

It's a lose lose situation AND after Bleachergate certain members of the UT Admin have no desire to play them ever again. Cougar High fans are annoying as fuck and I get little joy playing them or beating them whereas losing results in extreme displeasure. Playing Rice is enjoyable because their fans are relatively intelligent, know their place, and often work with us or went to grad school with us at other institutions so they're our friends. It also has a gravitas lended to it by JFK and the Apollo Missions (see the 50th anniversary celebration of the moon landing). Their band is also pretty funny. In addition we get all the benefits that would come with playing Cougar High with none of the drawbacks.

Rice should become a permanent yearly "rivalry" with some NASA/Moon/JFK related name and trophy that is played at NRG every year so that we have a game in Houston. Every year around that time we could use the game to emphasize our engineering/science programs and academics to recruits, students, and the general public. Get Moriba Jah to land us another blue chip lineman. It'll be a free win most years, a great recruiting game, and a nice treat for the Houston Texas Exes/Longhorn fans.

He was referring to the Houston barber shop community. They know stuff.

That's funny. Growing up in Alief, I used to go get a $5 bald fade every week, usually at Tony's (still there, many locations, still the best $5 fades in town) by Vietnamese women. I always thought they were only programmed fade robots or something because you'd be in and out in less than 10 minutes.

They weren't very gentle and usually seemed angry, tho. Probably did know some stuff...

Barbers on the Horn said the metro area of Houston is turning into SEC land due to A&M and Katrina LSU survivors. Said more people there care about the SEC than the Big 12. Don’t know if that’s true or not.

That’s fine in and all. But when Texas is good. Texas is king. Some things never changed.

that sounds like the equivalent of Fast Freddy's in Austin. They used to be $5 in like 94/95, then it went up to $7.  I think all the women that knew how to do bald fades left knowing other shops were charging $15. So the quality declined rapidly.  But I missed those days.. took 10 min and you were out.. I go to a barber shop in Richmond, VA and it takes 45 min and you get the sell hassle of bootleg bluetooth phones and ps4 controllers.

Used to go the $2.99 haircut place on Dairy Ashford on the other side of what is now the Westpark Tollway a stone's through away from Elsik and Hastings high schools. Now that place costs $3.99 for a haircut and it's the same Vietnamese barbers 25 years later.

I know exactly the one you're talking about. Used to buy weed at that corner store back when I was going to Killough.

Fuck yeah man. Best thing about all those spots is being a young teenager and getting a fade, then walking next door to get some of those Vietnamese sandwiches. You'd spend all of $10 and feel like a king.

They say that Alief went downhill once the Metro made it out that far.

And Killough...man, way back when, they used to have a damn good speech and debate team. Every tournament I would go to, they would win the overall school title. I remember those kids chanting, "Killough is number 1, so don't you forget!" I hated it because I could compete, but my school was total shit.

Them sandwiches, Banh Mi, they were good. You don't get them high quality anywhere else. Being raised vegetarian, I would get the ones with tofu (thank God for the many Buddhist temples in that area). That place was good quality, cuz other places the tofu is too damn salty and you feel like you're gonna develop a kidney stone.

Now my hungover brain is demanding a banh mi, extra spicy.

I am no defender of UH-- I am 100% onboard with Rice and Rice only when it comes to scheduling our Houston visits. I will personally hold that Bleachergate grudge until I die. But who in a decision-making capacity at UT do you think was even around when Bleachergate happened? It was almost 20 years ago. There's no Coogerpedia for our administrators to check.

I think our disinterest in UH has to do more with the fallout of the satellite campus (which is more recent) and the risk/reward of playing them at all.

Does beating Rice by 40 points in front of 20k fans mostly filling the lower bowl of a cavernous stadium really do anything for our recruiting in Houston? I get that recruits and parents can meet the coaches, come down on the field, etc, but ultimately it's a pretty dull affair.

I'd prefer seeing if LSU wanted to do a neutral site game every other year. Helps them a lot but helps us a lot, too.

I'm down to play one tough non-conference game a year.  The rest should be tune-ups.  Our schedule is filled with some real heavyweights in the next several years.  There's general goodwill between the Texas and Rice programs, lots of alumni/family overlap, tons of UT alums in Houston, and we always beat them.  Holgerson will make UH more dangerous and there's reason to give them that pedestal.  Screw UH, happy to continue playing Rice.

Why does LSU need to be a neutral site game, in your estimation? Besides the presumption of safety from AC related shenanigans.

We play the game in Houston because it helps with recruiting and because we have a few hundred thousand alumni there who'd like a game in their city the same way we play one in Dallas every year. Well, not "the same way" but I couldn't think of another way to phrase it.

Hahahahaha. No, but I remember seeing it posted. I always wondered about that guy.

I've met him, he works in IT at a company in Austin.  The craziest part about that is he was married or had a girlfriend at the time and the girl on the hill with him was neither

What’s been posted on these last 2-3 pages is one tiny hair’s width away from being on par with scat porn.

I’d argue that this statement applies to roughly half of this entire thread. We’re no more than 1-2 standard deviations north of the usual scat:real information ratio.

We're not trying to help their our recruiting by giving them us exposure. They We stand to benefit from that game more so than we they do.

See how that works.  They are already getting exposure.  They are down the street selling the SEC.
