And you get what you pay for.

This is not entirely true. It sounds good, but it's wrong. I - and I think most of us - have paid for things and not gotten them.

Tex Long's First Rule of Finance is "You don't get what you don't pay for."

Like the original version, it's not universally so, because sometimes you do get what you do or don't pay for... but the far greater occurrence is ... "Nah, you ain't gettin' it."

Thinking that you'll definitely get what you pay for... Bad Idea™.

With regard to Baton Rouge, it is a gigantic shit hole but the campus is nice. Oxford is like fucking Mayberry if it got invaded by a bunch of country club cokeheads. And it’s fucking impossible to get to. BR at least has a fucking airport.
Holy shit that is a poetically good description of Oxford.

It really is a perfect description of that town.

Lane Kiffin can simultaneously choose to abandon his team before the playoffs AND throw a temper tantrum demanding to stay? He's truly diabolical!!!

(Much of what you all are swallowing down right now is Ole Miss PR. They're an also-ran program who got a coach poached like just happened to 3 other schools by SEC teams.)

I don't really understand why ole miss wouldn't let him coach the rest of the season if he's willing to do it and LSU is willing to allow it.

It seems like Kiffin is in the wrong here. But, here’s a bit of a half-ass thought.

I know an employer wants an exiting employee gone asap, especially when they are going to one of your main rivals. But in this one instance, Ole Miss has a chance to win it all for the first time in a long time. And tying up your ex-coach for the next month working on the playoffs, instead of devoting all his time on LSU could benefit Ole Miss both ways.

And maybe Kiffin really wants to try and win it all and do it for himself and his players, and Ole Miss not budging on the issue led to what’s happening now.

I have to admit I would almost  never consider letting a coach stay, but in this situation I might have. Kiffin is taking players and coaches anyway. If you can keep them together for a playoff run, it might be worth it.

Because they have pride in themselves as an institution? Letting him coach the playoffs would be the biggest bitch move I would have ever seen.

Insanity to think Kiffin would devote even most of his time to the Ole Miss game prep.

Then as soon as their playoffs are done he would just take their players regardless.

I don’t know how he could have handled it. But I think either Ole Miss allowed themselves to believe he would be back OR he led them to believe he would be back. Me, I am telling them I am gone a while back in the best way. But that’s me. I am giving them a chance to do what they need to do. I am offering to coach the team the rest of the way and that’s it, if they say yes cool. If not, oh well. I wouldn’t touch the staff until Ole Miss was done with the playoffs. I’d get verbal agreements if they want to come with me. Or whatever. I think he could have handled it with more class but he doesn’t seem to have that affliction.

Oklahoma state hired UNT's head coach weeks ago and he's finishing out the season and any playoffs or bowl games before officially moving to OSU. I get that ole miss to LSU is more of a lateral move than a move up, but it's not like it can't happen.

Also everyone comparing this to some corporate job being walked out needs to stop, these are not similar situations.

Yeah, it makes sense to get rid of him now for this reason. Start the portal window now. Nobody will leave because they want to play the playoffs.

Judging by the stuff coming out of Gainesville the last few weeks, I'm convinced he basically sold everyone on whatever their expectations were.

He'd apparently already signed an MOU with UF but then would flake out and then also freaked out when UF was doing due diligence by talking to other coaches/potential GMs.

I don't think anyone should feel sorry for Ole Miss in this situation. They know exactly who they hired at the time, this was always part of the risk.

Sounds like Kiffin handled this poorly but I still don't understand why Ole Miss put an ultimatum on him in the first place when they were heading for the playoffs.

So you don’t think poaching the staff and the best players on a team and going to a MAIN rival in the same conference is not the equivalent of taking information from a company you work for and giving it to a competitor?

lane always has been and always will be a morally bankrupt pos. Period. People who root for him (outside of his sobriety which we all should) just need to admit they like a HC that has flamed out spectacularly every place he has been. Has not won an MNC as a HC and it’s not bc he hasn’t had the “right personnel” he’s been outcoached by better HCs. He deserves to be embarrassed like this. He is a shit person.

Most stuff already agreed to. The biggest change in concessions was that UF wanted him at the end of the regular season. With LSU getting involved and willing for him to stay at Ole Miss through the playoffs, UF agreed to that as well but UF wanted stuff locked down and public before the December signing day and were pushing for a public announcement ASAP.

He wanted to bring is own GM with him but UF was also interviewing others and it pissed him off. The MOU may have not been clear on that role so it went back and forth.

UF basically started to get a bad vibe because he would be on again/off again too. Somedays completely engaged and others ghosting.

I do not know if the rumors of UF interviewing Sumrall last week (that both Sumrall and Florida shut down really quickly) had anything to do with any of this it but the timing makes sense.

One of our bigger boosters was getting a bad vibe and basically urged UF to cut bait. That booster has been getting eviscerated on the Gators boards but as more and more comes out, I can see why he may have acted as he did.

No. He's leaving and he can ask this people to come with him now or a month from now, no reason to act like he can't.  There's also no insider info to steal and take to a competitor from your analogy. He is the insider information. That's why I said they're not comparable.

Ole miss are idiots. They should have just shut up and let lane coach then gotten the news. I don't understand this announcing jobs at the end of the regular season bullshit for recruiting.

Or maybe there really is so much scandalous shit behind the scenes they lived with that the brass in Oxford covered up for years now, and they finally had enough.

You don’t think taking the best players is equivalent to inside info? Ok! 👌 duly noted.

Ole Miss was dumb for believing he would return. Unless he really shined them on like he does 19 year old co-eds 🤮 but he’s a dick. You hire him you gonna wind up with shit on your face. Look at all his previous stops. I don’t think he’s worth the hassle. I see at least 6 or so HCs that don’t have his “history” that I would want more than him. Period. Should they have let him HC? No. And I assume he was his typical dick self to them.

it’s funny watching the Lane lovers though. He’s everything we all knew he was. I hope he never wins a MNC as a HC. Never.

Look at how he is handing himself. He’s a snake and an asshole. Any CFP run would be just an infomercial for his future at their biggest rival and he’d be undermining their current roster and future class by recruiting them to LSU. He will be doing that anyway but Ole Miss wouldn’t even have someone making the case for them to stay.

What do you not understand about it?  The calendar is completely idiotic and should be item #1 to be addressed when it comes to fixing college football, but it currently is what it is and you really don't have a choice but to make hires now to have a chance at setting yourself up for 2026.

Kiffin is Cusack’s character in Grosse Pointe Blank.  He maintains a certain moral flexibility.  As does LSU.   This is a match made in heaven… or hell.   Will be entertaining for sure.

If the committee booted FSU from the playoffs two years ago for losing their QB, then they have to also boot Ole Miss for losing their HC and offensive staff if they want to maintain any kind of credibility.

A key difference was FSU played in the ACC championship game without their QB and their offense looked like complete ass.  They barely beat a bad Louisville team.  That hasn't happened with Ole Miss.

An attribute of some (not all) successful business folk is they are able to separate emotion from a business transaction (which is what hiring a coach is).  Sounds like whoever this booster was figured out Lane pretty quickly.

It’s a safe assumption that they wouldn’t look like the same team now if they were to play a game today.

I briefly thought about making an account to make an attempt to educate 'em on past salaries due, public funding, state corruption and how bad the entire thing smells.  However, I realized that is just the kind of thing they embrace and if you play pigs, you're liable to get muddy.

The mods are notoriously thin-skinned as well.  I made an account and tried to educate them on those exact same things and was banned awfully quick.

Their play calling would undoubtedly look different now with Lane and their offensive staff now being absent. It’d actually make a lot of sense to do it. If they did something like that to a helmet school like FSU, there’s actually a pretty decent chance that they’ll end up doing the same thing to Ole Miss.

They might’ve screwed themselves out of a playoff spot by handling this the way they did. At the end of the day, he gave them the best season they’ve ever had. They were naive if they thought he wasn’t going to get some enticing offers with the kind of season they’ve had.

SEC should stop inter-league poaching and transfers when coaches leave. I know Sark took some guys w him on the way out of Bama, but he was a coordinator. This type of Lincoln Riley shit is ugly business.

Counter-point.  The SEC loves this because it makes for great coverage, not only now but in the years to come.

This isn't as fun if Kiffin decided to take his talents to Penn State.
