Listen, I am no GreenspointTexas, but I'd need more than that to take the Texas job, given that it would undoubtedly also kill me before I get close to 50 YO.

Here are some things to think about regarding the purported buzz with WM and Notre Dame, and also things to think about regarding WM returning to Austin.

1) Muschamp and his wife hate cold weather. He's not moving his son to South Bend for his final 3 years of HS.

2) Muschamp does not have any burning needs for money right now or ever again. He wants to coach again, and he wants to be a DC doing it, so it will have to be the right gig.

3) Muschamp and his wife Carol love Austin and loved their time at Texas. His wife still visits regularly and stays with friends.

4) Muschamp and Kelly don't know each other.

5) Muschamp knew how to defend great Big 12 offenses and would be a stud DC hire.

6) He was an animal of a recruiter and still enjoys it.

7) He'd undoubtedly bring Corey Raymond if he was hired at Texas and would likely keep Hutzler. They know how to evaluate, recruit, and "get things done" on the recruiting front these days, and Texas is in a new era of CFB and needs to get better at the GTD part, asap.

8 ) Anyone judging Muschamp as a recruiter or DC and finding him short is showing their true dipshittery. Did he take Tariq Allen and Patrick Nwokpura when he got to Austin? Yes. They needed bodies and LBs weren't climbing over themselves to come to Texas at the time. He also played a key role in landing damned near every big name that Texas pulled during his time here.

All of this is just beautiful to read. Adding on, Kelly and Boom share an agent so I imagine a meeting can happen pretty quickly to get familiar. Also Boom would be an absolute asset as someone who knows the university, area and coaches in the area, could really help Kelly acclimate quickly to a region he’s never coached in before

So you think Raymond would leave LSU? Seems like a tough pull as a LA guy who's been there a while and they'll likely match whatever we throw at him. Would love to get him though.

Some weird shit is going on at LSU and coaches and players are jumping ship. I don't know what to make of the happenings there but Orgeron may not be there much long. Coming to Texas would at least give him 4-5 more years of job security.

He's had 3 top 10 offenses in the past 5 yrs.   It's strange. He was running a hyper fast-paced and innovative spread offense at Cincinnati that were some of the best in the nation but then got way more conservative at ND.  I definitely think he needs to open it up more if he wants to ever win a title at ND or elsewhere, and hopefully he'd be open to that since he had so much success with a cutting edge offense previously in his career.  If he came to Texas, he'd have two very dynamic runners at QB with Thompson and Card so hopefully that would lead him to open the offense up more.

Rewatching the second half of the Alamo bowl, I watched it live but I was not near sober enough to truly take in what I was watching. My god, just show BK, UM whoever the second half with Bijan, Thompson, DM0, Collins, Rojo, the young as shit OL. Why would any coach NOT want to come here with that talent, regardless of opponent

Because he's the head coach at Notre Dame.

Yeah- I don’t buy that the job would kill you shy of fifty. Did Mack Brown look like a guy that burned the candle at both ends?  I don’t think so and he was damn near as successful as you can be here short of Saban/Dabo, and for as much as we bitched about him he should have probably won 3 national titles (fucking Gideon and BCS bullshit and colt injury) here in the space of 5 years. With a little luck he goes down as an all timer and I’m pretty sure he was a sloth. And not super smart. Coaching with a blank checkbook at Texas shouldn’t be any harder than winning- imo- we’ve just run into some mouth breathers that make it seem that way.

As to all that Muschamp stuff agreed a billion percent

OK enough with the CTJ on the Brian Kelly thread.  If you want to talk CTJ to head coach please start a "CTJ or Bust thread". kthxbai.

A few other things to think about regarding Kelly and UT rumors.

a) The only reliable source around Kelly at Notre Dame that is worth believing would be Quinn, his OLC. All of the other guys around him are ND and midwest guys. He wouldn't tell those guys jack shit about looking at any other job until he was taking it.

b) So when ND reporters/writers come out with "someone close to Kelly" completely denying any interest, which could undoubtedly start to happen after tomorrow, take that shit with a grain of salt.

Trace Armstrong is Kelly's agent as well as Herman's. When Applewhite was the HC at UH, Armstrong represented both MA and Holgerson. Armstrong actively worked on the UH brass to keep MA through the first signing day and bowl game for continuity's sake while knowing fully well that Holgerson was about to be hired. MA fired Armstrong directly after that unfolded, but there is precedent if something like that were happening at Texas.

No he's not .  He may have been a brighter offensive mind back in the day but people have caught up.  He's been lackluster and he seems crazy and a pretty conservative guy.

I bet Armstrong will be happy to be fired by Herman directly after BK happens

Kelly plus an elite staff would be interesting. Muschamp would be a home run hire. I’m still pretty curious about Yurcich. I don’t think we got to really see his stuff.

If Yurcich is here next year, hopefully we saw some of his stuff in the 2nd half of the Alamo Bowl.

I hope you’re right about Muschamp. Of course the Strong, Herman and Mackovic hires have taught me to not judge any coaching hire seriously, because it’s impossible for someone like me, Joe fan, to figure out who is really good or not. Fans just don’t have the visibility that experts have in evaluating coaches. At the same time, the so called experts fail a lot too.

Mentioned earlier, Kelly is a few wins away from breaking Knute''s record.  Will he walk away from that or maybe he won't have a choice? Anyone K-now?

Good question.  If you include the wins ND had to forfeit he's only 3 away from passing Knute.  If you don't include those then he's still a few seasons away.

Holtz claimed that he 'retired' because no one should pass Rockne at ND - but his record the last few years at ND wasn't great and he was likely going to get escorted out of the building if he didn't leave on his own.

How close does Kelly think he is to a title?  Does he think he can do it rebuilding again at ND (he's about to lose his QB)?  Is the Rockne total wins thing more important or important at all?

I'm guessing we'll know the answer to most of these by the end of next week.

There are no experts. One of the biggest cons out there, in a lot fields, is the I have this piece of paper (degree), I'm now a fucking expert. There are no experts in evaluating coaches. And there are few true experts in any field.

agreed and yes coaching hire "experts" like Korn Ferry.    the only expert we've ever had was DKR unfortunately.

Thanks.  Yeah, BK seems to currently run a more ball control, methodical type offense like Iowa State under Matt Campbell -- But with his current roster and talent level, that might be the best strategy.

Wonder how BK might adjust his offenses with more talent??

He's had 3 top 10 offenses in the past 5 year, so his offense in general isn't that much of a concern, but he does have a bad history of getting completely shut down when he faces elite defenses.  He did put up 40 in regulation on Clemson this year, but that seems to be the outlier.

Notre Dame running from a 2TE set is a 2020 innovation of 1st year OC Tom[my] Rees.  For the previous 29 years Brian Kelly ran a rather bland version of the 4 vertical WR spread. It took a former Kelly QB becoming OC to be trusted enough to change his philosophy.  Rees thought that ND's traditional recruiting strengths are OL and TE and installed a compatible offense.  Maybe he got that from reading fan sites.

I dont know shit. But my uninformed opinion.:  texas / notre dame blue blood status basically equal.

Texas has more resources  paying coaches , facilities and other.

Texas also easier to recruit due to  the state of Texas, lesser academic standards and admin cooperation.

If BK felt ND was holding him back due to these situations, he would be a fool on paper not to seriously consider a Texas move.

Day drinking opinion.

If Kelly did come he'd most likely bring Jeff Quinn (OL) and Matt Ballis (S&C). Other than that it's a bit of toss up. I could see Terry Joseph b/c of familiarity with Texas and potentially Tommy Rees. After that not sure.

As long as he brings someone that has helped him previously on the OL, I am whelmed. They have churned out nothing but stud OL

I would hope that he would bring:

Rocco Spindler Clarkston (Clarkston, MI)      6-4.5 / 315   0.9718     Pat Coogan Marist (Chicago, IL)     6-5 / 290   0.8701      Blake Fisher Avon (Avon, IN)     6-5.5 / 336    0.9743      Caleb Johnson Trinity Catholic (Ocala, FL)     6-7 / 295    0.8958       Joe Alt Totino-Grace (Minneapolis, MN)     6-7 / 283   0.8864

I'm all in on Urb...but the thought of Muschamp being our DC again, i'm embarassed to say, is arousing.  This is the emotion you want in a DC.  Poor bastard doesn't have the brains nor the skills or capacity to be a good head coach but no doubt he'd be my number one choice for DC in the entire country.

Our offensive line problem isn’t lack of talent. We aren’t the most talented in football or anything but could have been a top 10-15 unit.

Didn't someone mention when we got Yurchic we lost gained and then lost Ewers within a month? Not sure he's the answer when he's running off athletic QB's like Milroe for Charles Wright.

Yurcich was the reason Ewers committed in the first place. Herman was the one who ran him off
