I don't know why Nahlin wants to dance around it like he's got some crazy inside info. It's widely acknowledged that there are several guys at DE/DT and at CB/NB that were tempted to portal after spring and talked down. It's also well known that more guys have joined that side of the fence than have gotten on board with this staff. This defensive staff has a personnel problem and the perception among not only the current players on the roster but among trainers and recruits (as well as staffs recruiting against Texas) is that Texas isn't playing it's best 11. You can talk at length about culture, effort, and attitude and yada yada but you can't instill a "true culture of competition" and at the same time reward effort over actual result -  cutting off one's nose to spite one's face.

Prime example - Jimmy Johnson had an actual true culture of competition and winning in his locker rooms at The U and at Dallas. Attitude, effort, and buy-in mattered but Jimmy also knew that Orwell was right everyone is created equal but some are more equal than others. Emmitt Smith notoriously skipped tons of practices and held out to avoid the off-season grind. Does anyone here think he was a locker room problem for his attitude and effort? Does anyone think Johnson's culture was negatively impacted by Smith? Does anyone think Johnson should've played Sherman Williams over Emmitt Smith? No. Competition means the best guy wins. You can do this ad nauseam with every single sport and it's best coaches and players. Ideally we'd all want the guys to be VY and all 105 guys challenging to working harder than anyone else but that's not reality.  It's a hell of a lot easier to hardline it when your depth chart actually features actual depth but when you set your culture by playing full on fucking spares because they give effort - you aren't building a culture of competition - you are building a culture of compliance. Quite simply you aren't teaching Alfred Collins (and to that end the entire roster) that effort matters by playing Jett Bush over him - because Bush at 100% effort is still not better than Collins at 75% effort - you are teaching that being his guy matters more than being good. Ditto with Foster, Brockermeyer, Thornton. It's not teaching competition that's teaching compliance. Kitan, Jaylan Ford, Adimora, Gbenda, T'Vondre, Barron.

Here's the great secret to coaching at a Blue Blood vs. coaching anywhere else. Steve Sarkisian wasn't hired to install his offense and Kwiatkowski wasn't hired to install his defense - they were hired to win football games. There is no "wait and get his guys in and get the system in place" at a blue blood.  You don't get 5 patient years. Win. That's the job.

Not to defend fuck face Tom, but I think quite a few of Charlie's guys hated him for the mere fact that he took over for Charlie.

It was like 20 years ago, calling me a liar over not remembering the location correctly is a choice, I guess.

Whatever. The fact Steele made that colossal fuck up at home in front of the soon-to-be rape enablers makes the story even better than if it were on the road. Your location adds nothing, but apparently you felt the loss on a one in a million play that was purely the result of an idiotic call was somehow even greater if we all knew you were in Vegas at the time. Yay, big baller.

You're bizarrely bitter here. I was just telling a story in that part in that part of the post and recounting it from my brain, the being in Vegas part wasn't meant to be big baller. I was like 22-24 at the time and usually went to Vegas with less than $500 to my name back then, so you're projection at me about it is off. I just remember being in Vegas when it happened and it was against UNLV.

In any event, I'll start sending you my posts ahead of posting them so you can scour the minutiae for key factchecking.

Indeed and the biggest offender of that bunch (Charles O) pretty much owes his entire NFL career to Herman and Yancey and still loves to shit on Herman at any given moment and talk up Charlie despite the fact that he wouldn't have sniffed the NFL if Strong had survived.

While I agree Jett Bush should never see the field, especially in front of a guy like Collins, at the same time we rotate in a lot of guys at defense and everyone has gotten plenty of snaps. Cook has been decent, Overshown has flashed at times, outside of that everyone else has been mediocre at best for the majority of the season.

When there is a coaching change there is always a disgruntled group of guys. If any of them were actually lighting the world on fire on the field they wouldn't have to be sharing snaps with guys like Brockermeyer and Bush. How do guys like Coburn, Ojomo, and Sweat allow themselves to be taken out of the game during crucial moments for Broughton and a true freshman? Where is the leadership, where is the dog in these guys to say you aren't taking me off the field. Some of you have obviously drawn your line in the sand and want to blame this all on coaching but a lot of these players are culpable too.

Sark said it himself in a press conference this week. The calls were not changing late in the game on either side, but the players were suddenly getting out of gaps and allowing big runs to happen. They would come to the sideline and know it was on them, so I don't really know if the dogs you speak of are on our roster. To be a guy like that, you need to back it up with your play or else the coaches will have your ass for it.

Collins accounted for 5 total tackles and no sacks against Ok state who dropped back 32 times to pass. They rushed for 220 yards as well.

Wait, so we should be blaming the players for not defying the coaches rotating them out of the game? Not the coaches for making the shitty decisions? Is that what you are saying?  You think that guys who are barely getting on the field as it is despite being more talented than the spares playing should take a stand and say "you aren't taking me off the field" - and doing so is the player leadership we are missing?

And a few of them, especially along the DL are perfectly ok watching us give up a crucial drive from the sidelines. I can understand needing a breather at times during the game, but once the opposing team reaches the wrong side of the 50 yd line they should be in Bo's ear telling him to rotate them back in. As I see it you're right, we don't have these type of "dogs" on defense yet. We have a couple on offense in Bijon, Worthy, and I'd throw Whittington in there as well, but we desperately need them at OL too. They also are too comfortable being a hapless bunch.

Defy? No, but being a leader and telling the coaches to put them back in, yes. The players are allowing the coaches to make shitty decisions, because they aren't leaders and they are soft. I've never had a coach not put me back in a game, football or basketball, when I asked to go back in. I've never had a coach deny me an assignment when I told him that is what I wanted. You lead by example, you earn snaps and playing time by example. Tell coach not to take you out until you tap on your helmet or you ask to come out. You think a guy like Coburn doesn't have that pull if he wanted it? Ojomo? Bottom line is from what I have seen they don't want it.

Am I correct that this is really only an issue on defense? Seems like the best guys are playing on offense, not sure how guys could have many complaints there.

At least they appear to have corrected the mistake with Collins. He's a starter now. Not sure what the complaints are at CB/NB, seems like the best are playing there. I could see Adimora being pissed at safety though.

Hypothetically, where else would he go if not Texas? If he's homesick, have to think it's us, Aggy, TCU or SMU. TCU is kinda a mess, don't think he liked Aggy (also Weigman coming in plus bad spot for QBs). SMU could be a very real option.

If not really that homesick and just wants out, maybe Clemson or UGA? LSU depending on new coach? Idk though, all those schools have blue-chippers in line too.

Alot of guys seemed coached up around Tom yet we still shit the bed.  Another culprit is Malik Jefferson.  He was about to benched by Charlie, Tom comes in and turns him into first team all big 12 yet Malik's tweets seem to throw shade towards Herman.

Malik is probably embarrassed that he failed to live up to the hype. In some cases, that's on a coaching staff. In his case, I am pretty sure that's on him. To be fair, he is nowhere near alone in his shortcomings.

What a good coach does when he takes over a team and good players aren't buying is convince them to buy in.

It doesn't have to by a my way or the highway kind of a deal,  convince the players it is in their best interest to stay and be team.

It's not gonna work all the time,  but that should be the approach until nothing else will work.

I am still confused as to Ewers status with the team. He dropped out of his sr year of high school, enrolled at Ohio State for NIL purposes, and is on the active roster for this season? That seems super weird to me. Did he reclassify and then get a GED or something?

He graduated high school early, isn’t on the Ohio state travel squad.

He graduated early and reclassified. He is a freshman on their team, essentially taking a RS.

Do want. For whatever reason he couldn't crack the rotation this season at Oregon, he was the 6th ranked OT in the 2021 class and Bama was one of his finalists so Kyle Flood has familiarity there. Hoping they go all in on a pursuit.

Supposedly he was hurt and that's why he didnt get much playing time.  That kind of let him to feel homesick or so the rumors go.

No, he didn't. It wasn't televised anywhere, not even in Vegas. It wasn't on PPV. The video that I posted is from the UNLV production team. They didn't even know they had it. It only surfaced when UNLV created a Year in Review recap (it's branded a John Robinson Film...lulz) of their 3-8 team that year. The audio is from the UNLV radio feed mixed into the field level camera that captured the play.

Over time, the lore of the play grew & grew. People had heard about what happened in 1999, but how could a play like that not make a single ESPN highlight (or lowlight) reel? Because it wasn't aired. Kinda like the game where Wilt Chamberlain scored 100 points. Wilt said that over the years he'd had at least a million people tell him they were there at the game for his amazing feat. And another 5 million told them they watched it on TV. Except of course it wasn't aired.

The only people who watched Baylor choke that game away in unbelievable fashion were at Floyd Casey stadium on 9/11/99. And since @closetojumping was in Vegas he certainly didn't watch it.

So CTJ--rather than just mentioning the dumbfuckery of Steele and Baylor in losing--claims that he saw it, assumedly on a massive sports book screen. And then CTJ goes one farther:

Maybe it was on in Bandera and he watched it there.

They don't have the same feeds there the rest of the US has.

Man, that video must be awesome. I'm sure it must be all over YouTube. Except it isn't. Because it doesn't exist. Oh yeah, Steele was a wreck and did say he wanted to "set a tone", blah blah blah. But the only thing that CTJ was likely vomiting over in Vegas in '99 was splitting a pair of tens at a $2 Black Jack table at Slots of Fun.

We were in our hotel room, 4 dudes, splitting two rooms at The Monte Carlo. Taking a break from game watching because there was a lull and we hadn’t been to sleep much. Local tv was on and they were covering it during the sports segment, because, you know, UNLV is covered locally in Vegas. I’m sure that shocks you. They showed the clips and the Steele footage being interviewed. You’re taking me mixing up where it was played in my memory to the full desired logical walk of yours that I made it all up out of whole cloth. I’ve told this story since Hornfans. And we all fucking died laughing at the guy and his comments.

So, no, there was footage of the game and Steele contemporaneously at the time. That’s not manufactured and you not being able to find something on YouTube to your satisfaction doesn’t change that or turn me into some craven liar.

Turns out the Vegas detail matters, even if it pisses you off for whatever reason and led to this useless research on a minor detail in an anecdotal part of a post to attempt to prove a point.

CTJ doubles down again

Quote

The Setup

It was the second game ever for UNLV head coach and former USC and Los Angeles Ramslegend John Robinson. The Rebels had knocked off North Texas 26-3 the week before to end a 16-game losing streak.

Baylor head coach Kevin Stelle was attempting to turn around a program of his own. The Bears were coming off back-to-back 2-9 seasons and had lost the week before to Boston College on a missed PAT in overtime.

A contest clearly off the national radar, no national or local networks broadcast the game on television.

The Bears had the ball on UNLV's 8-yard line with 28 seconds to play and a 24-21 lead. All quarterback Jarmaine Alfred needed to do was take a knee to secure the home victory.

But wait, there's more

Quote

The aftermath

The sudden and total silence of Baylor fans stays with Thomas. Robinson walked over to shake hands with Steele, who looked as if the life had left his body.

The play made national news, but because the game wasn’t televised, it failed to take a greater hold on the public imagination. ESPN.com ranked it No. 85 among college football’s defining plays. Scout.com ranked it the 48th greatest finish.

It's amusing. CTJ's bonafides are well known. He's got more money & connections than many on this board--author certainly included--and yet his incessant need to always be correct even in the face of facts that prove otherwise force him to continue his charade. He does provide some good insights from time to time on subjects that most of us aren't privy to, and his efforts (if not his prose) are generally appreciated.

The damn thing is, it doesn't matter.  All he had to do was reference the '99 Baylor-UNLV game for the fuck up it was rather than claim that first the game was in Vegas when he was there with his buddies, then pivot to well, "I saw it and it was vomit inducing funny," to "we watched the highlights on the local news."

Except it wasn't on the local news. It wasn't televised. And apparently the local Vegas stations didn't think it was necessary to send a crew to Waco fucking Texas in game 2 of the season for a team that had gone 0-11 the year before. There is exactly one video of the play. It never aired. It was made at the end of the 1999 season to be used as a hype video for the next year (note: it didn't work).

Maybe CTJ is channeling his inner Michael Crabtree and he dreamt it in his head!

Technically you called us all dipshits in your quest to prove said point and then you did that thing you do where you take a side of an argument violently with massive amounts of words only to conclude that if you’re wrong you’ll be happy as a pig in shit. But we are all the fucking idiots for not thinking just like you lol. Some of us take a side and don’t necessarily want the opposite to happen because that’s usually how opinions and arguments work. Hey Texas sucks ass and you’re a dumbass for thinking otherwise unless they don’t then you can mock me. Why even type all that shit out then lol.

I never said I watched the game. We saw the story and the play and the questioning with Steele, we laughed pretty fucking hard. You’re working off of some premise that news stations don’t get highlights and commentary from local sports teams, wherever they are playing. High school teams get highlights aired by news stations, and that’s been true for 30+ years, and none back before the last decade were “aired”. You’ve got some bizarre predilection with this idea that I was intently watching an entire fucking Baylor/UNLV game with a magical payoff at the end. Who on earth would have done that at the time that wasn’t a fan of either team?

There’s no “doubling down”. It was all on the local news and it was hilarious. If you’ve got it in your head that news stations don’t cover local college teams and then share footage with the local news of whoever they’re playing, especially if it’s not a covered game by the networks, I don’t know what to tell you. Before every game was on tv, that’s exactly how they’d do it for shit games like this.

There was a UT-Colorado game in the early 2000s in Boulder that didn’t get picked up. We found out that there was a raw satellite feed for CU’s students or some shit, aired over their closed system once received from the sat or whatever. Some sleuth on Hornfans figures it out and gets the raw sat code for it. SLX finds it in a thread, we take the info to SRO (a sports bar in Houston at the time) and the manager ends up airing it for us on a feed to a couple of his tvs. There was literally no audio because there wasn’t staff covering the game. Just a feed. It was great.

Shit like that has been happening all over the globe for at least 40 years. This idea that there wasn’t coverage of the game locally, or that they didn’t cover Steele either, and then pass it on to Vegas as well, is nothing short of you not knowing what in the fuck you’re talking about.

I don’t care about being wrong, but I do care about being called a revisionist liar. It’s also pretty important for you to ensure that that premise is true. It’s not, you’re incorrect either willfully or naively, and I’ll stand by that happily.

Dude, stop. No one worth a shit is questioning you. It's kinda late, everyone has had a few drinks. You don't have ta 'splain yourself. But...ya need to take a chill pill and give people some slack. You got to give a lot to get a little. I swear you are gonna have a cardiac incident. You're a good poster, but goddamn.

Concur.  I was in Las Vegas and saw when the cardiac incident happened to Elvis with my own two eyes.  All the same signs were there.

Were you his toilet? Or the peanut butter and fried banana sandwich? Reincarnation is a thing, you know.

CTJ doubles down again

But wait, there's more

You may be getting a little carried away. I lived in the Waco TV viewing area at the time. I can assure you the local Waco stations had cameras at the game and showed highlights afterward. Maybe they shared clips with the LV network affiliates, but local Waco stations were there.
