Am I the only one that doesn't understand Whatsapp?

You have to have a phone number to text in Whatsapp. Why not just fucking text the person?  What am I missing?

WhatsApp is text over internet. In places where texts are costlier than the US, WA is basically free and has all the functionality. If you hop on WiFi it’s completely free. It’s a bit more secure although as others have mentioned Signal is better if you’re a nut for security.

if you’re texting international WA is either free over WiFi or just data usage applies.

We can do away with Instagram altogether. Let all those "influencers" go hide behind Onlyfans paywalls, so the rest of us and our kids are left alone. If we want to see their content, we can go to them.

We can and should do away with all three.  WhatsApp has a viable alternative in Signal and the other two have proven to be toxic beyond repair to society.

Use Signal instead then your message is genuinely encrypted end to end (as long as the other user you are texting uses Signal).  SMS/MMS is a gaping open air free for the gangbang security distaster.

Privacy is an illusion on the internet. Signal is currently more private than WhatsApp but it's not invulnerable, either.

I quit FB for 8 months came back and unliked and unfollowed all the bullshit. Now it’s just friends and I check it twice a week to stay up to speed. Much, much better experience than doom scrolling.

I only have family and close friends as FB friends.  It is good limited like that.  I like seeing the pictures.

My snapc…. my younger relative is saying her Snapchat isn’t working now. Apparently other users saying the same thing.

DNS is getting flooded right now.  all the machines that would normally ask DNS for a facebook IP and then cache the IP are constantly making DNS requests.

No doubt but there are some companies who are willing to take a stand on behalf of their users privacy.  With that said it's only a matter of time before they get money whipped into changing their minds and putting the CIA/FBI backdoors in.

The way Signal does registration, they can’t comply with a subpoena for your data even if they wanted to. Without access to a physical device, the only way someone is getting in is via crazy Israeli spy software. If you’re not using it to run active measures for the GRU or to plan the next ISIS offensive, you’re probably OK there.

Of course, as with any communication it’s only as private as the person who gets it wants it to be.

Aye... I don't know why they haven't just updated the DNS on those 3 domains to 127.0.0.1

Socially awkward dweeb at the least.

On a side note the only messaging app I use is wickr, cause thats what my weed service uses. reading up on this and I just realized amazon bought wickr a few months ago. They are gonna have all my preferences if they start selling weed online.

there was a post in /r/sysadmin from a now-deleted account that may have some additional detail (archive.is link)

/u/ramenporn  Update 1440 UTC:

As many of you know, DNS for FB services has been affected and this is likely a symptom of the actual issue, and that's that BGP peering with Facebook peering routers has gone down, very likely due to a configuration change that went into effect shortly before the outages happened (started roughly 1540 UTC).

There are people now trying to gain access to the peering routers to implement fixes, but the people with physical access is separate from the people with knowledge of how to actually authenticate to the systems and people who know what to actually do, so there is now a logistical challenge with getting all that knowledge unified.

Part of this is also due to lower staffing in data centers due to pandemic measures.

Update from /u/ramenporn

No discussion that I'm aware of yet that is considering a threat/attack vector.

I believe the original change was 'automatic' (as in configuration done via a web interface). However, now that connection to the outside world is down, remote access to those tools don't exist anymore, so the emergency procedure is to gain physical access to the peering routers and do all the configuration locally.

So it is possible that we are seeing the worst-case scenario of having insufficient access controls and change management. But the end result is that it's only possible to access their servers physically/from the same subnet. Can't imagine the destruction if their core routes were all wiped and they have to manually recreate it - would be a disaster of epic proportions.

I don't understand any of this.

But I'm so delighted I'm giggling.  The world was better today, even if just for a few hours.

That said, I feel like I need to pick up some slack:  "JESUS CHRIST IS MY VACCINE!  PLANDEMIC!  YOU WON'T BELIEVE WHAT THESE TWO CUTE KITTENS DO NEXT!  WATCH THIS HOT GIRL ALMOST, BUT NOT ACTUALLY, SHOW HER BOOBS!"

She actually shows her boobs on my feed.  You may want to update your app once we emerge from the other side of this technological apocalypse.

text to Whatsapp is like snailmail to email.

WhatsApp identification is based on a number, but the mechanism itself is free.  This is a big deal if you are messaging across borders.  It queues messages when participants are offline.  Chats are persistent.  It better supports media.  It better supports group messaging.  And a million other features.

It just sucked when it got bought up by Facebook.  Telegram and Signal are newer and similar, but Signal is more widely used.
