Concession of SEC to aggy

Interesting read about Greg Sankey but this one paragraph caught my eye.

(One apparent concession to A&M not standing in the way of Texas’s arrival in the league: Bjork says the first football game in the resumption of the Longhorns-Aggies rivalry will be in College Station, not Austin.)

https://www.si.com/college/2022/09/06/sec-commissioner-greg-sankey-leads-way-college-sports-daily-cover

One Sankey quote from the article has to make aggy sphincters spasm…

“I think it’s good for the broader fan base of college football that, uniquely, we’ve restored rivalries. It’s not simply Texas and Texas A&M; it’s Texas and Arkansas. You maintain the Texas and Oklahoma rivalry. … We’ve added big brands—the notion of Texas playing Alabama this fall and repeating that [when both are in the SEC], I think that magnifies interest. … It’s good for us. I think it sets us up in a healthy way in the future and it can build interest in college football.”

There’s one common dominator to all the great rivalries - past, present, and future - that gets Sankey excited.

The article forgot this part of the conversation:

Bjorn: “We will allow you to let texass into the might SEC but we will play those stupid tsips in C-Stat, not Asstin!”

Sankey: “I’m fine with that because you know what you still don’t have?

Bjorn: “Wut”

Sankey: “No National Championships in the last 83 years”

So what are the three for Aggy

Texas, OU, Missouri just to restore some SWC and BIG XII stuff

or

Texas, Alabama, LSU because they want old SEC powers to have inroads to Texas in recruiting every year and fuck with aggy for being little bitches

My money is on aggy playing Texas, Arkansas, and LSU

Bama has too many rivals and now will get just as many games in Texas with UT in the fold they don’t need aggy anymore.

The point I was making is that Sankey is coming out and saying that - despite our recent mediocrity - rivalries involving Texas are good for the SEC and college football. We’re kind of a big deal. His natural instinct isn’t to say that about OU rivalries, and A&M is an afterthought if not for its rivalry with Texas.

He could have added the future of Texas-LSU.

With wanting massive network deal going forward you'd think that removing FCS scheduling from SEC teams schedule is a must. I don't think networks will want to pay ultra premiums for SEC vs FCS team being 12-14 games of that.

If they can negotiate a major strength of schedule component to the at large CFP selections, the SEC should go to a 9 game conference schedule, ban FCS games, and require that every team play 2 P5 OOC games.  That would bring in some nice TV money and be more exciting for the fans/networks.

Anything other than a 9 game conference schedule would be a terrible decision. Agree about the FCS but can't say much about the p5 OOC stipulation you suggest because who knows what the structure will be like in 2-3 years. There may just be a p2 or p3, basically.

We were pretty shitty the last time we beat them.

True. They were a better team and should have won that game but the universe requires balance so aggy needed to play their role and lose.

NSIAP -- Classic Dave South and aggy:

Classic. The best Dave call has to be Baylor going for two to win the game as time ran out back around '04ish (too lazy to look it up). Back when Baylor sucked. We were northbound on I-35 on the way home from a Longhorn victory listening on the radio. You know by the sound of silence that something bad for aTm just happened. I'd find the clip but again I'm too lazy. 'Horns played aTm the following week at DKR. Some student was standing on the front row behind the aTm bench wearing the bear mascot suit. Classic.

I don't agree.  We were 8-5 that year and ranked when we played them.  Aggy was 7-6 and unranked.

I don't remember the record, I just remember it as the period where things first started to look a little bad. The Gilbert, Ash, Case debacle. Gilbert went from the heir apparent to 3rd string. Ash and Case going back and forth as QB1. Shipley, Whittaker and Malcolm Brown had been dealing with injuries. Vegas had us as the underdog for that game but I put $600 down anyways. But yeah things were not looking good going into that game.

That statement was put in parentheticals specifically because it didn't come from Sankey and Sankey wouldn't confirm it. Bjork thinks saying that publicly as often as he can will cement it into reality.

I'm interested in seeing how Texas handles the ATM bullshit publicly from here. Texas is pushing for scheduling issues to fall the right way, and that has been okay with some of the other SEC titans. It's rubbed the weaker programs, ATM included, the wrong way.

-9 conference games doesn't serve ATM's or Vandy's or Missouri's benefit, but the money and inventory for future money from that 9th conference game sure as hell does.

-The other issue across the the conference is the FCS game. Bama and Georgia are happy to have another team pushing back against these games, while almost everyone else, including pussies at UF and ATM, want to keep those games.

-The final scheduling issue that was front and center is that ATM started out ardently against playing Texas yearly, claiming they're not rivals and they'd rather keep playing South Carolina on a yearly basis. Eventually they were just told to shut the fuck up and take the money.

So now Bjork is attempting to push this nanny-nanny-boo-boo shit with the first game being at Kyle. There's literally zero justification for the rivalry picking up in that regard, but, hey, the spineless whiners need a "win". I am still not convinced that they're going to get even that concession.

Bjork has to be the least popular person in the SEC by now right? Between the Freeze era at Ole Miss, his media stunt leaking TX/OU, the historic cheating ATM has pulled in recruiting, and now his continued public campaigning for shit. Plus any private objections he's been pushing

As I recall, after the play there were a couple seconds of silence before this:  "Was that Ziegler?"  "Yep, that was Ziegler."  And that was it, that's how everyone listening knew the 2 point try was successful and that Baylor had won.  It was glorious.

We were ranked earlier in the season, but we weren't ranked by the time we played aggy.  They were favored to beat us by 8 points.  We'd just lost our previous two games to Missouri and K-State.  We also lost to OU and Okie-lite earlier in the season.  While we have had worse seasons since then, based on recent history (2010 notwithstanding), I remember (at that time) thinking we were relatively shitty and really dreading potentially having to hear a bunch of ags drone on about scoreboard for who knew how long if they won.  Thankfully, that didn't happen.  I took my oldest to his first Texas game the following week at Baylor and sat in the rain with him while they kicked the shit out of us.  Case was all out of miracles.

You can tell Sankey knows aggy.   Spending time in Texas for college and living in Oklahoma has given him enough exposure to what kind of yahoos they really are.  I wonder if he had been Commish when aggy was shopping the SEC if things might have turned out different?

I didn’t argue against any P5 opponent that UF has scheduled.

What you did here is a cheap rhetorical tactic that will get you iced pretty quickly on this site for being a fucktard - you introduced a strawman. You moved the goalposts.

I asked a simple set of requests. Defend UF’s non-con over the last two decades. Defend scheduling FCS teams. You chose to attempt to change the subject. Let me help you answer this:

”I cannot defend the scheduling of FCS opponents in the SEC. We started doing it a little over a decade ago because we realized we wouldn’t get punished for it by the media. It boosted our records compared to other conferences playing more difficult schedules. Also, we started scheduling them in November because we realized that this is when other conferences are beating themselves up and it would boost our rankings late in the season artificially. “

”UF hasn’t played a real non-con road game in 20+ years outside of the state of Florida because we are dickless coelenterates who like to talk to shit but have no willingness to back our talk up on the field outside of the SEC. But now we see the landscape shifting, so we’re scheduling non-cons in the future so no one will notice our bullshit in the past and we can pound our chest. “

Strong work. But yeah, happy to play Rice every now and then. They’re not like Vanderbilt though. We don’t strategically keep them in our division so we’re guaranteed another win besides our bitchass FCS game every year.

LMAO at you for thinking that Rice is any better than a FCS team. Florida historically not played OOS OOC games for three reasons:

1 - Florida plays Georgia and LSU annually in the SEC. Collectively, those schools have won national titles in 03, 07, 19 and 21.

2 - Florida State is an annual end of season OOC game. They have won a national title in the past 20 years.

3 - If Florida makes it to the conference championship game, the likely opponent is Alabama who has won seven national titles in the past 20 years.

That means in a good season, Florida's schedule will include teams that won more than half the national titles in past 20 years. With the exception of Alabama, that is true of every school in the SEC. Contrast that to Texas's conference and in-state schedule that features zero teams that won national titles in the past 20 years, and skips out on the best in-state OOC competition in favor of Rice.

Yeah, go beat your chest about not playing FCS teams. Nobody cares.

Keep carrying that water for the UF scheduling like a pussy, guy. Your first maneuver was to distract by bringing up Rice. Then you attempted to pivot with regard to future scheduling. Now you fall back on "but SEC and you ain't tough enough!" Texas will play whoever, wherever, whenever, and the scheduling dating back more than half a century backs that up.
