Hey man if the end result is Cooper, that's completely fine

Agreed, especially if Rickey Stewart indeed redshirts. Texas doesn't necessarily need two RBs in every recruiting class. Certainly not for '26 and maybe not even '27 if the entire RB room remains intact.

Take the money from positions of less or very less need - TE for instance - and divert it to the entire RB room and bring in Cooper.  Just a thought from someone who doesn't know shit about fuck.

$9.95ers really setting this one up to crush our souls

There's nothing about the situation today that crushes my soul. We're in all these recruitments and winning many of them, adding more meat to a roster that is already nearly empty of fat.

These are great days my friends.

One of my favorite parts of this recruiting cycle is when we lose out on someone, we say "Texas has fidelity. They have a monetary cap on recruits, and they aren't going to go over and get in a bidding war...that's for someone like Tech or Baylor to do." Then when there's a chance to get a really solid player, the tune changes to "Holy shit empty the bank and go get that guy!"

To be clear, I'm 100% on board with your strategy. Cooper would be a great get. I also know shit about fuck.

I thought knowing shit about fuck was a prerequisite for most of us.

Or maybe that was knowing fuck about shit.

I see this kind of post all the time. Like a message board is supposed to be some kind of hive mind. I see it from content creators who depend on engaging with their audience, then blame the audience for demanding contrasting actions on the part of the content creator. I mean, I see it from all segments of the population regarding all sorts of things.

There can be a group that thinks Texas should be fiscally responsible in terms of their overall budget, their budget within positions, their budget with current players and upcoming retention --- contrasted with their budget for the acquisition of new talent. And then there can be an opposing segment that so desperately wants the dopamine hit from a talented teenager creating validation and affirmation for their favorite college sports team that they excitedly wish for other people to spend a small fortune to get the kid to say yes.

People can hold contrasting opinions. Within the same person, frankly. One of the things that makes people most interesting to me is when they can simultaneously feel strongly in support of two opposing sides of the same position. It happens to me, too.

But mostly I think it's a group of people who are very comfortable with spending someone else's money with no real limitations, and then a group of people who hope Texas has a plan they're trying to follow in terms of roster payroll.

I'm in the Texas has a plan (it's similar to NFL payment validation for positions and players) and hope they follow it. This is a developmental/plug year for us. No recruit other than potentially Wesley will see significant playing time other than maybe special teams from this class for 2 or more years. That's what we need.  Backstopping our DL, OL, secondary, a LB or so to develop. Would like to flip M. Lee if reasonable, Cooper would be great - big back but stay sane on it.  People aren't looking at our current roster talent enough. We need to keep those guys that have a year or so in our system first (Becton is greatness). We can develop now and have time for it ... unlike the prior 10 or so years. Get the best talent in a reasonable way, develop them, profit with wins.

Ojo is a great example of what not to do. He needs the Goosby plan but his TT deal is for 3 years. Ideally he would develop over 2 or so years then contribute. TT has put themselves in a position that he may get a year if lucky and will struggle or may never get it. His recent tape shows this.  Every EDGE we looked at or have (Wesley) showed how raw he is on skill. It's geared for the defense on those drills! Wrong. No hips, no flex, no use of power, bad feet, too high, bad first step, etc. Can be coached but needs time. Their deal doesn't allow that. Maybe it works OK in Big 12, not here for that price tag.

Good post @SL Xpress.

aggie has done a great job on recruiting. They need basically, everything. One of their main recruiting strategies is similar to their Soviet campus design "isolationism" from what CS is really like. They can buy players ala 2022 but I suspect their current class will, as usual, have massive defections after a year there. Maybe Elko sold them though. Will be interesting. Especially on WR.  Reed is not good - watch their Spring game.  Turn off volume because every play some goober is talking about how great he runs while he can't hit a WR unless (2nd half) they use 2-3rd string secondary for him.  Reed not at SEC media day.  The 2nd guy is better and that random guy they brought in looked better but Reed can run!

They're going to have trouble keeping those OOS kids once they realize life in CS. They'll start well but at best 8-4 imo would be the top. Recruiting, this relates because we can flip some after November. There's only a couple I'd want though. Never been sold on Krempin, maybe Roseborough? We never seemed to engage Arrington, who knows?

Their defense can only improve after wasting NFL talent that Wisner abused. But Elk is taking charge there, so who knows.

Defense for them - man coverage and stuff the run with contained blitz on Reed (he can run).

Whoa, they aren't taking their franchise QB to media day? The guy who is going to lead them to the promised land with a victory in Austin, the SEC title, and the CFP?

Of course not. Who would be so foolish to put a third year QB in front of the media hordes. Or is it whores? I never can remember.

Roseborough was the one that stung. Stewart was a nice to have. Their five star guys are all listed as athletes, and admittedly I dont really know about either of them.

None of those stung to me. The one that stung imo, not related a&m, was Lee because Ojo is a twat and perfect fit for tech.

  Reveal hidden contents

So the cat’s out of the bag.

Following interactions with a reporter at an event yesterday, Derrek Cooper, the nation’s top running back, is said to be heavily considering - if not favoring - Texas.

It shocked some of those reporters. It didn’t shock this one. 😉

**

Some of those reporters have now changed their predictions from Miami to Texas. Some just picked Texas for the first time.

That‘s what happens these days.

But, before we go further, I want to caution everyone:

Seven days is an eternity in recruiting. Never celebrate until it’s time to celebrate. There can be twists and turns between here and the end zone.

**

Texas needs a big-time running back. It’s a clear need. I’ve written as much all season long.

The last two cycles, Texas has not signed a top RB.

They’ve signed good players, but not necessarily hyper-elite ones (perhaps Christian Clark or James Simon prove the rankings wrong).

So we knew Texas would be on the lookout for a premier running back nationally at the very outset of the 2026 recruiting cycle.

Then, when Texas moved on from Javian Osborne so quickly, it was a sure sign of the exact caliber Texas was looking for. Texas had set its sights extremely high because Osborne is a very good player himself.

As it relates to Steve Sarkisian and the firepower he wants and tries to attract, I hope folks really stew on the aspect I mention above.

Sometimes Sark wants to land a haymaker. Not just a really, really good player, but someone who can carry a team in times of need. Cooper is that type of prospect.

**

And then there’s this when considering Sark’s general roster construction…

Outside of running back, what other position has Texas gone the previous two recruiting cycles, and looking into a third, without signing a top 2-3 player in the country at their position?

Hint: I’ve got the answer for you and the list ain’t long.

**

In a day and age where NIL is king, Texas is going to have to pick its spots and pick its players. All teams must. Cooper appears to be one Sark has singled out.

The South Florida native visited Texas back in April and has a decision date of July 20 set. He’s down to Texas, Miami, Ohio State, Georgia and Florida State.

We’ll see where things finish.

But yes, Texas is heavily recruiting and in it for Derrek Cooper. Texas thinks Cooper is a special player.

**

Texas is currently at 18 commitments.

I still believe Texas will get to 20-21 by August 1.

We live in interesting times.

**

I, along with a lot of the OTF crew, am headed to Atlanta today for SEC media days. I leave in a few minutes here in fact.

Media Days officially begin tomorrow and last through Thursday.

Steve Sarkisian, Arch Manning, Anthony Hill and Michael Taaffe will speak to the media on Tuesday.

We’ll be in the middle of scrum and try to bring you as much news as possible not only from the Texas side but as much insight from other teams, players and media members as we can this week.

Hope you have a good Sunday.

Hook’Em!

We could get Mark Bowman with the amount of money you have spent at Dunkin' Donuts in the last week.

I never really understood the 180 with Osborne considering how much he liked us but it’s obvious we parted ways with him and really focused on the top two targets on the board, Crowell and Cooper.  I also always got the sense that Edwards was going to be the 2nd back in the class and I feel that he probably felt that way too.  He’s listed 5’9-5’10 and 190 lbs so he’s probably a little smaller than that in reality.  I think Sark was recruiting him for a Jayden Blue type role and perhaps he wanted to be a feature back.

I imagine they went down their list.  Once Crowell went to Bama, Bobby and Gerry mentioned Texas had a higher NIL package for him, then Texas went to Cooper.

I get the sense the same happened with Griffin.  Atkinson is 1 on the board.  If he doesn’t pick Texas, they will go down the list.

I agree with @Vertigo, Roseborough with what the Coleman brothers have done first year to body reshape and strengthen (one dropped almost 40 lbs other gained muscle mass) could be maulers in the IOL.  Nick Brooks seems to be doing great at learning OT.  I'd like to get Atkinson but he's not an Ant Hill and we have a few super studs waiting in LB. Not worth going nuts on money imo. This is a take a break on some areas year (WR especially - developmental time).  We've got DT in the works to avoid such harsh portal needs. OL - need to flip Lee imo. Secondary, as long as Smoke has close down corner ability, we are good. If not, we f'ed up on that purchase. Cooper, really would like to get him but under realistic terms.

Not that this makes my idea any better, but I didn't mean from the TE room, just money budgeted for TE recruiting this cycle.

I think you nailed it. From what Bobby is hinting at, it sounds like LB is another focus area. On Texas was also one of the only outlets pushing the XG and TA as mutually exclusive, so it seems like there is attention being paid to that position. If you look at our recruiting for the last two years, LB is the only other position that fits the bill of needing a “top” player.

WR - Lockett, Ffrench

TE - Townsend

OT - Baker (the staff apparently also ranks Brooks as one of the most talented)

I think Ant Hill and Atkinson are different players. Atkinson is a pure ILB. Ant Hill is more of a hybrid. Atkinson might be the best defensive player in this class. He is more Urlacher/Seau. I can’t really think of an NFL comp to Hill. I guy that is more comfortable on edge/ blitzing, than playing ILB.. (He still a good at ILB, but he is better getting after the QB (at least in his 1st 2 seasons). Believe he had highest pressure rate per rush of any Longhorn).

LOL, Agree! and also agree with @Codaxx. He can stuff the run, rush, or drop back in coverage. There's a reason he's going 1st round after this year. He can do anything.  Best I've seen since D. Johnson.  He's a monster. Heck, you could play that talent at safety even - he's that damn good. Ok, my China take out place closes soon, bbl after an MSG coma.

He's easilly a top 5 prospect in this draft when you take positional value out of the equation. Curious how high he'll end up going.
