He’s going for the grilled-radish look. And making it work.

The Miami/ND is not going well for our commits that are at the game. Miami looks like a potential championship contender. Hopefully we can still hang on to everyone.

Miami is fraudulent, but it won’t matter in that crappy conference

Mini update on Derrek Cooper

Texas commit and OTF 5-star running back Derrek Cooper attended the Notre Dame at Miami game Sunday, as expected.

In talking to a source close to the recruitment, Cooper remains as solid to Texas as you can be in today’s day and age of recruiting.

The Texas staff understands Miami will go hard after Cooper (and DL James Johnson) until deep into November.

The staff is playing the long game, as always. Derrek Cooper is scheduled to make his OV to Texas September 20th weekend, which is the bye week for Chaminade-Madonna.

There is the likelihood that Cooper will be on campus twice this season per the source. And Miami will get Cooper back for another game this season too.

The 6-1, 205-pounder remains the lone back Texas is focused on in the 2026 class, as of today.

Miami has one talented RB committed in the class right now, Javian Mallory (Boca Raton, Fla./West Boca).

Cooper is represented by Milk & Honey Agency, who has over 70 NFL clients.

So we're pretending this recruitment isn't transactional? Okay.

I love Cooper. I hope to goodness we get him. I don't care if he's looking for a big pay day or not, the guy is an effort dude. But let's not pretend we've suddenly warped into a day and age where he might pick Miami because they have a better season. That's not how this recruitment is going to play out. Not to mention I think we're going to have a better year in any case.

Unless we pull our NIL payday or fail to match what other teams bring, I assume we're going to get him in December.

This, and then with a heavy heart and torn emotions leave for the money. Tragic.

It kinda looks like someone is trying to hug more than the other. Almost looks like cooper is trying to try get away. Weird. If we really lose him, that sucks. If we lose wells, ehhh.

Cooper's team got whipped, right?  Last thing I want to do is hug it out after getting beat badly.

Everyone knows a still photo of the first third of a hug is going to be perfectly representative of the vibe of the situation.

Recruiting: 5-stars and 4-stars

Starting Tuesday morning with a few recruiting notes. We have both football and basketball to update, beginning with football.

Defensive line update …
As you guys read, I stopped by Miami Northwestern High to see OTF 4-star++ James Johnson. My takeaway was that Johnson wants to be at Texas. Think he continues to like the idea of doing something different for college vs staying in state. Unless that changes or can be significantly convinced otherwise, I like Texas.

The recruitment of 4-star Corey Wells (Petal, Miss./High) is certainly not as positive.

The Texas verbal visited Auburn over the weekend with his brother and South Alabama LB verbal Chris Wells. While Wells has not informed Kenny Baker (as of last night) that he plans to flip to Auburn, the Tigers staff is feeling confident. Auburn would take both Corey and Chris Wells.

Baker and Wells have spoken twice since the Auburn visit. Texas wants to keep the 6-5, 285-pounder in the class. And the staff is fighting to keep him.

Hoops recruiting weekend was very positive …
OnTexasFootball continues to believe 5-star guard Austin Goosby, younger brother of Trevor Goosby, will come down to Texas vs. Duke.

Sean Miller, GM Chris Ogden and the entire Texas staff did a terrific job with Goosby and family. Goosby’s mother, in particular, got to spend more time with the entire staff than at any point prior. Miller did a very good job of presenting a plan for Austin at Texas, and it’s appealing with Tramon Mark and Jordan Pope graduating after the 2025-26 season.

Austin Goosby’s girlfriend is a freshman athlete at Texas, Trevor is likely at Texas for two more seasons (2025 & 2026) and there are family ties to UT with mom having graduated along with other family members.

OTF would put it at 55-45% for Texas over Duke prior to Baylor and BYU visit to close things out. OTF believes BYU will end up with the highest NIL package. SMU and Miami are very competitive on that front too.

Five-star big man Cameron Williams (Phoenix, Az./St. Mary’s) also had a tremendous visit over the weekend. OTF was told by two sources that the 6-11 future NBA first round selection is/would be a very good fit at Texas from a student/athlete perspective, and his family saw that. OTF was told his younger brothers absolutely loved Texas. Fairly easy travel from Phoenix to Austin vs some other schools being considered is also seen as a positive for the Horns. The competition is real and uber competitive with Kentucky, Duke, Arizona, USC, Purdue and North Carolina also receiving OV’s prior to a November decision.

One more hoops recruiting note: OTF still believes Texas is the heavy favorite for 4-star++ G/W Bo Ogden (Austin/Awestlake). He will make his OV September 19th weekend.
