You think Quinn regressed because he was lifting too much? What?

Just spitballing. Is it possible the things sark has them do training wise messes up their throwing motion.

I am excited for your explanation on how lifting weights throws off a QB's throwing motion.

Excited for it? You might be an odd dude. Btw I do get a temporary impact on my tennis swing from lifting - feeling out of sorts - but it’s like only for the hour or two after I lift.

The longer a qb is in sark's system the worse he looks. Could it be a strength and conditioning issue? Like lifting too much or too heavy?

It is not S&C. I did think Quinn regressed is 3rd year at Texas. His mechanics never improved. Quinn's biggest issues mechanics, pocket presence, turn downs, and turnovers. The mechanics thing is killing me. Not sure how that does not improve and in Arch's case gets noticeably worse. The turn downs are an issue that seem to be happening with Arch now also. He is waiting for the perfect look, which he did not do last year. None of us know shit and how we got here, but I do wonder if Sark over coaches at times. That is just a batshit crazy theory I am thinking about as I try to cope with what I see on the field.

Can you name one confirmed example of this, whether it’s a Texas QB or not?

Well ever since I started deadlifting 415 pounds and doing 20 reps of 300# benchpresses I can't throw the football the same anymore

(I'm 67 years old btw)

So you just choose to ignore the games last season before Quinn got hurt.  Got it.  Neither Quinn's nor Arch's problem at QB are due to lifting weights.  JFC.  I can't believe the dumb shit i read on this board.

Lifting your way to bad mechanics feels a lot like the old wives’ tale in baseball, “never left heavy, you don’t want to become stiff and muscle bound.” Turns out it was never a thing.

There are many big concerns, but the biggest for me is that Arch is sometimes staring at open receivers and not throwing them the ball. He must be in some massive crisis of confidence, for some reason. It 1) clearly wasn’t there last season and 2) was there by the OSU game, and has just gotten worse. /not a sports psychologist but I watched a lot of Frasier.

Maybe OSU mindfucked him because of what happened when he threw to guys who seemed open

Arch looks broken. He has 0 confidence in what he is doing. It is like the QB version of Chuck Knoblach. Nothing on the offense looks right. I have no idea what the offensive staff did this fall camp. The offense does not do anything well.

This is referred to as the yips fyi

ASSUMING (1) he's not hurt (2) QB2 is being prepped (3) sark needs to favor the run game anyway
A few successful designed runs against SHSU to move the chain might just unfuck his mental state and get him back to slinging the rock properly.

He ran for two TD’s last week and I’m not sure that it made much difference.

Last season he was a backup just playing the part knowing it was Quinn's team so not the same pressure.  This year he's the starter with #1 ranked preseason team, heisman 'expectations' (fair or not), Manning last name and all that comes with it.  I think the poor performance week 1 (which wasn't great but also somewhat explainable) is just spiraling on him.  Zero confidence in his throws or decision making and it's showing.

I think it's the yips. After everything we know about how his family has handed the last 2 years of his career, I just don't see any plausible scenario where they let him continue to play with an injured shoulder. With that being said; I do have an idea for the fix. Bench him and wait until we're losing a game to throw him in there to play the hero. Maybe then he would come in and just play without overthinking. I'm only kind of kidding.

What kind of pillow does Arch have? There's your problem. The fucking pillow. And that's Sark's fault all the way. If Sark wasn't calling the plays, he could notice things like pillows.

From the “you gotta start somewhere” department:  At least he connected with Wingo the last 3 times in a row that he threw to him

I still can't decide if that TD throw was a bad throw that got lucky to be caught or purposely put in that location to avoid the defender.

So when does sark put in the back up? Against Florida when we have to? Every game is just bringing him down even more. It’s definitely not doing any better. He’s been sucking so bad that the back up can’t even come in for mop up duty with more than 3 minutes left in the game.

You would think the family would want to shut it down but what do I know.

If you pull the trigger you can’t go back imo. I think the time to do it would be this week vs Sam considering we have 2 weeks until conference play following this game

Oh I think Sark could announce today that Arch is sitting the Sam Houston game. To let some nagging injuries heal up, or whatever. Then the bye week. Just let him sit for a couple of weeks and decompress, if that’s really the issue.

EXACTLY!!

Bobby & Gerry are always saying “I ‘get it’, ____” on the OTF podcasts, but they don’t “get [shit 💩]!”

Saying “I get it….” is their way of saying “Don’t interrupt me.” & “You can’t disagree with me, because I started off with ‘I get it!’”

Again, they absolutely DO NOT “get it”…

RomaVicta gets it!!

To me, Arch is always in hero ball mode. He is looking for the touchdown play, for too long, every time he drops back. I also think he would do better out of the shotgun, and never turning his back to the LOS. He would never have his back to his receivers, and should be able to locate them much sooner. He could have his feet set as soon as the ball hits his hands. He just needs to become competent in the 5-10 yard range and keep the chains moving, and take the occasional downfield shot.

Grinding out drives will also keep our defense fresh.

He needs a break.

Agreed. Road trip. Take the back roads.  Grow a beard.  Take a selfie in South Dakota of - I dunno - the world’s largest prairie dog statue maybe?

Right after the Florida game.

Wait until you find out that every game Texas has lost ever was because the refs screwed up or were getting paid or were told by the league office or the tv networks to make certain calls.

Also any team we don’t like that wins a game against any other opponent not named Texas only won because of the refs.

These are the facts.  And they are undisputed.

The first throw of the game he threw a swing pass out to the back and hit him perfectly in stride. The pass had some touch on it and he seemed loose. Every other pass from that point on was fired as hard as he could and he missed wildly. If I am Sark/Milwee, I am telling him this week that if he fires a ball as hard as he can he is getting benched. There is zero margin for error when you are throwing like that. Last year he was lobbing balls downfield and guys were running under them. This year he is throwing them all on a line, even deep balls.

He missed them completely, including on the very first play of the game. OSU didn't have to do anything.

Werent those bailouts punctuating sloppy drives? I mean more designed runs to put the offense - ie him - in a rhythm.

It's almost like Sark is trying to keep his promise to the Mannings. I've gotta prepare Arch for the NFL by having him take more snaps under center. Although those snaps probably help the running game.

This dude hates his life

That was just about the saddest TD celebration I’ve ever seen. It looked forced with just a few O linemen around him, and Arch looked disappointed he didn’t throw for it. I couldn’t see for sure on TV but I think the receivers just walked off the field.

After everything looking such a positive trajectory... Sark has to turn this shit around. We have the fucking defense to do it.

Fucking demon Saban pulled a starting QB in the national championship game.

Sark needs to grow a pair and see what Caldwell or Lacy can do NOW before this season is fucked.

He threw a couple strikes early. Said RB swing pass, he hit an intermediate throw over the middle for a nice gain a few plays later. He honestly looked fine in first quarter. The offense stalled early  because Sark elected to put the emphasis on bullying UTEP in short yardage and we couldn't do it, which is a separate conversation.

I think the red zone sequence in the second quarter is where it went to shit. He was personally responsible for botching that, not just the play where he threw the INT but every snap, and I think he knew it. Next time Texas got the ball, Sark went really run heavy and Arch didn't throw again until the 4th and short PA overthrow to Livingstone. You could see his bad body language on TV. Completely cooked mentally and at that point we were 3-4 throws into the 10 straight incompletions. Bunch of hot garbage consisting of obvious pressing and mechanical breakdown after that. If you squint he kinda sorta rebounded after that stretch, so there's that I guess.

I don’t think anyone has mentioned this, but maybe the Texas defense mind fucked him in practice.

No, it's clearly a he needs to meet the moment thing. He's gotta figure it out in the next week or it's going to be a very long season. This defense is very easy to root for, and it may be something everyone needs to pivot to.

I think it's interesting that sark called out athlete ball and that being something he's seeing too much of and doesn't want to see. It makes me think that arch isn't bought into sarks play calling and thinks he can make something else happen. That's a bad mindset to have and could lead to even more pressure. It could also explain why he's just flat out missing seeing wide open early reads.

If I'm sark this week all I'm doing is calling plays and running them with a throw timer of 5 seconds. He needs to get the ball out to a route in 5 seconds or throw it away. If he can't figure that out first before he can use his legs to buy time then it's fucked.

I guarantee sark isn't designing plays that take more than 3 seconds to develop and 5 seconds to execute.

Posted

it'd be great if arch could anticipate and throw to the open receiver, the system and the play calls are there. I think the defense is the team, and with upgrades in punting and FG kickers you'd hope sark would see how hard points are going to be to come by for both his unit and the other team's offense so field position / punting on fourth down and field goals will be acceptable outcomes.  I think if arch can calm down and improve even somewhat and sark can think about his defense as his best offense then this texas team still has 10 wins in them.

It's also the issue when the play breaks down, the first read isn't there, or the defense disguises their coverages and blows things up.

To me this is all about delayed decision making.  Arch is slow to make reads, slow to pull the trigger, and slow to recognize defensive wrinkles.  He panics, which impedes every aspect of his ability to deliver the ball.

In amongst this Wild Speculation Thread was this important post above. I never would have guessed that Arch is under more pressure than any other SEC QB.

Just  anecdotally, it seemed like he’s had plenty of time to throw quite a bit. We all know the OL is shaky, but this stat shows it’s way more shaky than I realized. Arch has missed guys badly with plenty of time to throw, but maybe the poor OL play is making him look worse than he is.
