Who are Texas’ TOP 5 Rivalries?

1) OU

2) Arkansas

3) A&M (I guess)

4) SMU ?

5) Rice / Baylor ?

I’m stumped after the Top 3, because Kansas has only been basketball, TCU doesn’t register, Nebraska was only for about 15 to 20 years, and it was really one-sided, but it did also encompass women’s volleyball. LSU has never been what it could be.

Just wondering who makes the TOP FIVE.

This is late + long, so I’ll spoiler for those uninterested.

Spoiler

As always, I’m late, but you and BO&W are absolutely correct, my Argentine amigo—there are only three true rivals. My comment was more about where Tech is in the hierarchy (vs where they think they are). So, if I had to choose from all of the historical football matchups, there are others that I would put ahead of them at #4 and #5. As somebody mentioned, I see Rice as a rival from a historical POV (and a family bias). Kennedy’s famous reference lends credence to that notion. Granted, it’s more of a tradition. I’m probably in the minority, but that’s honestly the only in-state game I’d hate to see disappear from the schedule completely.

Other than that, among in-state opponents, TCU, Baylor, and SMU (another family bias, I’d like to see this rekindled) all boast older matchups, more meetings (SMU tied, I think, despite a ~30 year hiatus), and a higher winning percentage than Tech. None of them are true rivals in a competitive balance sense. My point was—in terms of “historic rivalries” that should be respected, other schools have as many qualifying merits, if not more, than Tech does (though there is a TTU/UT trophy involved, apparently). It’s also related to something Bobby touched on recently about Tech and Baylor’s B12 membership being more about political pull than actual merit. In truth, I don’t respect Tech enough as an institution or a football program (I respected the pirate…more than they did, ultimately) to ever even consider them a rival at anything other than hot coeds (that one is very competitive).

My view of Nebraska is colored by the great moments that matchup produced (Tech has definitely produced its fair share, as well), and the respect I had for their program, over that brief period. The first B12 Championship, the standing ovation, Jamaal’s massive 4th quarter, etc. I was also in attendance for the cold, snowy ‘06 game in Lincoln that Texas won on a last second FG, and for the ‘09 B12 Championship in Arlington, so my view is warped. Furthermore, in the decade following that game, Texas and Nebraska were a (ghastly) mirror image of each other, and it certainly seemed as if they were in an epic struggle to determine who could capture the award for most spectacular clusterfuck. That 2010 game, in particular, was quite possibly the fiercest battle of ineptitude ever. Regardless of the record, the Huskers were always a formidable opponent for the Longhorns. Even when they didn’t actually play and the only competition was who could shoot themselves in the dick the most, it was hotly contested.

Needless to say, it will be great to have the three real rivalry games back. You’re right about LSU, though. Hopefully, that changes.

Btw, this is what I was looking at for records (I think it’s accurate, but the first meeting dates are incorrect):

Well it would be but considering the current landscape we find ourselves in, I have strong reservations about bingo cards.  Or any other gambling for that matter, in the the state of Texas and its flagcanoe.  Or ship.

That record will be posted in every article and stated in all dialogue leading up to that game during the week and in the pregame. You just know it will be thrown out there mostly without context. When is the last time we played them? In the 1920’s?

“If Tony and Greg want to go into a deeper think tank with their key stakeholders about the future of collegiate athletics, there’s no pride of authorship here as long as that communication continues at the rate it’s been,” Yormark said. “I really don’t think about this as an opportunity for them to move in a different direction.”

I don’t understand why Texas Tech is so upset.  They were already 96% irrelevant in the college football landscape even with Texas around and now they’re 100% irrelevant.

What’s another 4%?

Wrong.  They went from a power five to a power 3 conference

Nightshift is a beautiful song that was meant to be played in the car while driving in the middle of the night.

I'd go with "Night Moves" by Seger.  Otherwise known as the thinking man's Bruce Springsteen.  But judges will also accept Nightshift.

I remember one late night growing up near Chicago and we were still drunk/high and Andy was driving his mom's wood-panel station wagon, and we're literally on Lake Shore Drive to drop somebody off.  And the sun is just starting to rise over Lake Michigan.  And sure as fuck on the LoopFM station, Aliotta Haynes Jeremiah song "Lake Shore Drive (LSD)" comes on.  I thought I saw right straight into the core of the galaxy.

Less than 3 years later, I transferred to the University of Texas.  Walked through a tunnel for the first time at DKR to watch us play Mizzou in a crossfire hurricane in something called the Big Twelve.  Yorkmark took that station wagon and drove it into a fucking lake.

In the 80s, Gattis had a centralized call center with one phone number to order pizza anywhere in austin: 459-2222

(you will recall - if you were born - that 10-digit dialing did not become mandatory until '94 - before then you could dial a 7-digit number within an area code)

Sophomore year Jester East #507, telephone number was 495-2222

We averaged 5-ish misdials a day and got sick of it, so we started answering "Gattis" and taking orders

If you didn't get your pizza from august 85 through may 86, welp, now you know why

GOT-damn.  Haven't heard that song in years, and I am now sitting in my office on a random Tuesday afternoon with tears in my eyes.

You know.... I used to think it was Top Gun that set me on my path to a career in the Navy, but it damn sure may have been this video.

It had to be later than that, didn't it? I remember 7-digit dialing in high school in the late 90's / early 00's. I moved to Kentucky and Tennessee for a few years and when I came back Austin had switched to 10-digit dialing, but that had to be in the early 2010's.

Or am I just getting senile?

Music hits us, and resonates with us, for so many different reasons. This song does it for me, one of those songs that makes me stop what I'm doing, and just listen.

It always takes me back, to the darkest of day of my youth. But it always helps me remember, all the days before.
