That’s a very fishy post and video.  OP admits that this is 3 month old video and the version he claims is involved wasn’t even released then.   Looks way more like user error and attention seeking than an FSD failure.

Once again, people are throwing random, unvetted shit from Reddit and BlueSky into this thread and treating it like facts.

1) This smells like bullshit.

2) I have a different bias than most on this thread, so I try to provide a counter to that majority bias.  (And don’t try and say “I have a bias towards facts”)

3) Echo chambers suck, especially when they bounce around bad information.

I owr you a better answer

I've been out to the gigafactory. It's a fucking joke. Everything this fucking guy has done over the last couple of years should lead you to believe he is full of fucking bullshit. But here you are carrying his water why? I get it. You bought a tesla. So what? You already paid him what you owed him for that. You owe him nothing.

I contribute to this thread because I have actual hands-on (or hands-off if you prefer) experience with FSD.   My daily experience has shaped my opinion that it is pretty impressive technology.

I am an advocate for autonomous driving.  I want to see us get there as soon as possible and save millions of lives.

I think it’s foolish and short-sighted to completely dismiss the work that Tesla has done in this arena just because Elon is an asshole.

I agree that it unfortunate that Elon has burned all of the goodwill and technology that Tesla has created. But the blame is not on the person hating Elon.

a better statement is that it was foolish and short sighted for Elon to force the dismissal of the great work Tesla previously accomplished.

Tesla is most toxic national brand in the US. And it’s not close. And it’s not changing.

Tell Tesla to put some lidar in their cars before you start saying shit about “saving millions of lives.”

Using only cameras to drive vehicles is like only using your eyes to see without using your ears to also hear if something is coming towards you. If anything, Tesla is hindering the advancement forward for autonomous vehicles by shitting on LiDAR when clearly it is superior to the camera-only system Tesla uses.

You want it to be fake therefore it is. You're a gd magician! OP has an explanation for not posting it for almost 3 months - as if that matters about its reality. You're fishing.

edit - also unless you want to go interview people who post on reddit, stop complaining about "unvetted." What are you even talking about. This is surly. For all anyone knows you're an uber driver who often chauffeurs around recruits who give you inside info.

Calling Elon an asshole is underselling the evil by a smidge. You say you’re an advocate for autonomous driving while simultaneously advocating for inferior technology that puts lives at unnecessary risk.

Not a chance I'm getting in a self-driving Tesla until the tech is upgraded to lidar vs strictly relying on cameras.

The fact that most of us crap on FSD has very little to do with Elon's antics (though it makes it funnier). We will say it again, the approach to autonomy that Elon has forced Tesla down using cameras only is not going to succeed in short order. No one questions that it CAN one day, but those who know understand ML and AI understand that right now you can't just operate with these limits. You need to have more sensor data. It does well enough for L2 Autonomy, but to hope to reach L3 or beyond you need Lidar and spatial awareness.

And for you to ignore that we have said this OVER AND OVER AND OVER is being willfully ignorant.

I've come to the conclusion that Teslas have always appealed to people who are inherently terrible drivers.  BMW/Mercedes/Audi drivers are the worst on the road in terms of entitled bullshit and zero concern for others (German engineering and ugly vehicles must appeal to dickheads for some reason). Still, Tesla drivers, on the whole, are simply bad drivers.  You can't blame FSD, or whatever the previous versions of it are called, for the nonstop fuckery that goes on in those vehicles all the damn time.  Can't stay in a lane, awkward braking, either driving much too fast or much too slow, etc.   The point is, maybe we're thinking about this all wrong.  As shitty as Elon's FSD undoubtedly is, what may matter the most is if it's better than the shitty drivers who buy Teslas.  If so, it's a net positive, right?

Nothing scares me more when I'm on a motorcycle than a Tesla in the vicinity (they are the number one auto brand killer of people on two wheels, after all).  Perhaps, maybe, fuck if I know, FSD will make them a little bit less scary.  Maybe I'm grasping at straws.  All I know is I will be avoiding riding downtown when their fucking taxis launch, which is a bummer as I enjoy riding down there on the occasional early weekend morning when no one is around but Waymos and hobos.

It’s wild that not a single person has ever died in a Spirit Airlines aviation accident. I’m sure plenty of people have died riding Spirit, but it sure wasn’t caused by a plane crash.

It's really stupid to only use cameras. I imagine the new Y is going to be slightly better if they incorporate the bumper camera into FSD. It will need frequent cleaning (built in), but with 2 completely different angles, it should eliminate some of the shadows/ lines on roads issues.

Thank you for defining “willfully ignorant.”   That’s not what I’ve been doing in this thread.

What I have been doing is pointing out when bad or questionable information is shared in this thread as fact.

I’ve also stipulated many times that Tesla’s current approach to autonomous driving may not work.  Still waiting on the actual results rather than “expert” speculation/prognostication.

Meanwhile, Tesla vehicles have logged billions of miles in FSD and the predicted carnage on our roads still hasn’t happened.

There has to be some level of credit given to it as the only system not geofenced and generally pretty good. It drove me to the ER perfectly a few weeks ago when I was in horrible pain. I ended up almost dying and spending a week there. Then, it drove me home.

Obviously I was alert and monitoring it the whole time. Musk deserves all the hate he gets but that doesn't change the fact that the non-cybertruck vehicles have the best software and app by a mile. They are still updating 7-year-old cars with new software and functional features. The supercharger network literally stands alone.

If only they were to figure out a way to oust him and hire an adult as CEO, they could get back to making damn good cars.

Yeah you are being willfully ignorant here. Many of us have cited the flaws with the vision only approach, many times and the lack of any autonomy beyond L2 from Tesla is more than proof enough that it is a failure. Waymo is well beyond them at L4 and millions of ride and hours of data utilizing an approach that most of us have cited is a sound one, for now. You put expert in quotes, but I will say this, with a degree in CS I have a damn good idea of just how far these companies are and are not in their approaches. And don't get me started in all this talk about AGI. This isn't speculation - it's having sound fundamentals in the topic and being able to make informed predictions based on it.

As far the carnage - that's debatable

I gotta say Elon looks like absolute shit in this video, both in just pure look and then his answers. Just some examples if you want to delve into them

6:55 - His answer are just dumb to these questions. The terse YES to being asked if he took things personally was pretty silly. And the following the very next question with such a long attempt to look like he was giving it real thought was so dumb, to the point where he almost forced more questions.

24:15 - His follow up questions were dumb too, she is right that its not for her to answer and for him to put her on the spot was idiotic. And it goes into the next question

26:30 - He looks really foolish on this one. He is caught in a trap of his own creation. He can't answer the question in any sort of way because doggy is never going to get close to the cuts he mentioned. He was walking them back almost the moment he uttered them and to try to spin it just will not fly. I will say the interviewer is a touch flat footed on this one because she SHOULD have said "yes, it should have been immediate, you were talking about cutting the budget." And then to spin it on Congress :eyeroll:

Tesla drivers are by far the most brainless and unaware on the Houston roads IMO. The next time I see one speed up will be the first time in years.  No difference between a Tesla driver and a 95 year old lady in a Lexus sedan at this point.

You know who famously pushed Tesla into a  camera only future, to save money, right?

Arrested Development Mistake GIF

https://www.drive.com.au/news/elon-musk-overruled-tesla-engineers-radars-cameras/

Quote

Tesla engineers feared CEO Elon Musk’s decision to remove high-tech radars from the company’s electric cars and replace them with cameras would lead to a higher risk of crashes with its semi-autonomous driving systems, according to overseas reports.

US publication The Washington Post reports the request to ditch the Tesla’s radar technology – used to operate the car’s advanced driver assistance systems – and replace it with a camera-based system was ordered by Mr Musk, despite objections from the company’s engineers.

And

Quote

While the relatively high costs of radar sensors compared to a camera-based system was attributed as the main reason behind the switch, Mr Musk believed cameras and computers would act more like a human’s eyes and brains which roads are designed for.

And

Quote

However, several former Tesla engineers – speaking under the condition of anonymity – told The Washington Post they were worried the radarless system would be “susceptible to basic perception errors if the cameras were obscured by raindrops or even bright sunlight, problems that could lead to crashes.”

Despite their objections, Mr Musk overruled the engineers and requested Tesla Vision’s roll-out – which included disabling the radar systems already fitted to existing cars on the road.
