Twitter's chief engineer quit after the the DeSantis debacle:

https://www.bbc.com/news/business-65717731

Quote

An engineering chief at Twitter says he is leaving the company a day after the launch of Ron DeSantis' US presidential campaign on the platform was hit with technical glitches.

Foad Dabiri tweeted: "After almost four incredible years at Twitter, I decided to leave the nest yesterday."

Mr DeSantis' entry into the race for the White House was hit by problems as a Twitter livestream malfunctioned.

Quote

More than 80% of the firm's workforce has been cut since Mr Musk bought it.

Mr Dabiri did not specify why he had decided to leave Twitter or whether it was related to the problems with the DeSantis event on the platform.

He did not immediately respond to a BBC request for comment. Twitter did not provide a statement on Mr Dabiri's exit when approached by the BBC.

Mr Dabiri, who was the engineering lead for Twitter's Growth organisation, said in a tweet he had "experienced two distinct eras" at the company, before and after it was acquired by the multi-billionaire last year.

Quote

In another post, Mr Dabiri said the transition into Twitter's "2.0" was "massive and rapid".

He added: "To say it was challenging at the outset would be an understatement."

However, Mr Dabiri said: "Working with @elonmusk has been highly educational, and it was enlightening to see how his principles and vision are shaping the future of this company."

Quote

Issues with a Twitter livestream meant that an event to launch Mr Desantis' bid for the Republican presidential nomination got under way 20 minutes late.

By the time Wednesday evening's Twitter talk had begun in earnest, hundreds of thousands of Twitter users had left the platform.

The Florida governor is viewed as former President Donald Trump's chief rival to be their party's candidate in the 2024 general election.

once again, Elon shows a fundamental misunderstanding of what he purchased, how it works and what it is good at doing:

Quote

Twitter’s Spaces product was not necessarily built to host events with hundreds of thousands of listeners. Most other Spaces have — at most — several hundred listeners at a time. Spaces was described as a “prototype” and “janky” tool by a former Twitter employee familiar with its development.

“Spaces was largely a prototype, not a finished product,” the former employee told CNN. “It’s a beta test that never ended.”

They added that the Spaces technical infrastructure is configured across multiple services in a way that isn’t “intended to handle Twitter-scale traffic.”

source

Elon evidently did a video stream early this month and said he was using "2015 periscope code" to do it...Twitter has built in live streaming now. even if it is periscope code as part of it, it absolutely isn't from 2015.

if you want some more laughs here is the NYT's article on how the twitter space compared to previous livestreams

Quote

David Sacks, a venture capitalist who moderated the Twitter conversation, declared it “by far the biggest room ever held on social media.”

+

Quote

According to Twitter’s metrics, the audio event — which was initially marred by more than 20 minutes of technical glitches before it was restarted — garnered a high of about 300,000 concurrent listeners, or those who simultaneously tuned in as Mr. DeSantis made his announcement. As of Thursday, 3.4 million people had listened to the Space or a recording of it, according to Twitter’s numbers.

Those figures fell short of 10 million people and were far from being “the biggest room ever held on social media” compared with past livestreams.

Consider that a 2016 Facebook Live event, featuring two BuzzFeed employees placing rubber bands around a watermelon until it exploded, drew more than 800,000 concurrent viewers and a total of five million views within hours of its conclusion. The 2017 livestream of a pregnant giraffe on YouTube brought in five million viewers a day.

+

Quote

The event with Mr. DeSantis was even dwarfed by past audio livestreams on Twitter. Last month, more than three million people at one point concurrently listened to an interview of Elon Musk, Twitter’s owner, by a BBC reporter in a Twitter Space, according to the company’s numbers. A recording of that Space said 2.6 million listeners had ultimately “tuned in.” (Twitter did not explain the discrepancy between the concurrent listener count and the “tuned in” figure.)

David Sacks is a liar.

Quote

In an email, Mr. Sacks said his assertion that the Space with Mr. DeSantis was “the biggest room ever” had come from a Twitter engineer. He said he had counted other livestreams that shared the same audio as the original Space.

“I’ve asked for more detailed analytics, but they’re a little busy right now,” Mr. Sacks said.

+

this is honestly the fucking sickest burn from this entire situation:

Quote

After the conclusion of the Twitter Space on Wednesday with Mr. DeSantis, traditional media poked fun at the technical glitches of the event. When Mr. DeSantis appeared on Fox News, Trey Gowdy, the host, quipped, “Fox News will not crash during this interview.” The segment drew nearly two million viewers.

heh in March i think? they cut back on paying foursquare for a feature that has been around since 2015.

https://www.pcmag.com/news/good-luck-tagging-your-specific-location-on-twitter-anymore

as far as i can tell they did not notify anyone or make any public announcements about it which is par for the Twitter 2.0 course.

i think it also does this if you disallow location sharing to them.

It wasn’t that long ago that the average person thought Tesla was an incredible automaker, and Elon Musk was basically Ironman. But things change, and people are starting to realize that Teslas can’t actually drive themselves and that Elon sucks. In fact, things are changing fast enough that a recent poll found that Tesla’s reputation absolutely tanked over the last year.

The poll in question is from Harris Poll in partnership with Axios and uses nine different categories to measure a company’s overall reputation, as well as how it changes year-over-year. And of the 100 companies included, this year, Tesla ranks 62nd, putting it right between State Farm Insurance and AT&T. Last year, Tesla was ranked 12th, meaning it dropped a full 50 spots in the space of a year.

That’s also a bigger drop than any other company on the list, including Chrysler, which dropped 22 spots to 67th place. That said, the poll is not all bad news for Tesla’s reputation. It’s still ranked much higher than BP, Spirit Airlines, Meta, Twitter, Fox and the Trump Organization. So at least there’s that. Unless, of course, you’re the CEO of Tesla and happen to also own Twitter (97th place in case you’re curious).

Toyota was the highest-rated automaker on the list, rising one spot and coming in sixth this year. Additionally, Honda dropped four spots and is now ranked 13th, while Subaru rose four spots, ranked 16th. BMW held steady in 24th place, and Ford jumped up nine spots to take 32nd. General Motors posted an even bigger gain, moving from 52nd to 34th. Volkswagen is also ranked ahead of Tesla and holds steady at 56.

But don’t worry, none of this is a concern for Elon. He’ll say what he wants, and if it loses Tesla money, so be it.

Oh man, this wording is perfect... if you read between the lines, "I was educated on the idiocy of Elon Musk and what not to do as a leader and I now understand how his shitty brain will ultimately destroy this company"

Fascists are the MOST likely to.  But "idiots" are also a key demographic, and the GQP doesn't have a complete monopoly on idiots.

Like the typical idiot who can't handle two independent thoughts, you read too much into it. Do you think most Democrats are following whatever the fuck elron is up to? This may come as news to you, but most aren't on twitter and they don't watch faux news. Some (gasp!) still think tesla is "cool." That's the thing that's been discussed - active and aware Democrats were primarily the people buying tesla vehicles. Now the company's rep is down with State Farm.

Well, being that around only 1 in 5 Americans is even a Twitter user....the percentage of respondents with firsthand knowledge is small, and when you layer in the fact that the vast majority of those are infrequent/casual users (I'm among them), they don't see a whole lot of change in their Twitter experience.

We are all pretty savvy re tech (relatively), and follow the news.  We are a small minority of the population (an issue that comes up time and time again).  The vast majority of Americans are ignorant idiots....and most of them have even stronger opinions than we do, while they have 5% of the information that we do.  As has been noted, "Idiocracy" is a documentary.

These things were all true at the time of each of the polls by the same service. There’s been a significant shift. One this thread will disagree with and have trouble understanding, but that doesn’t nullify it.

I see you're still having trouble holding two separate thoughts in your brain.

The one thing that remains true here is you have a conclusion you're trying to bend the facts in order to reach. Sadly it just makes you sound like a bumbling fool.

The demographic mosk is appealing to unfortunately isn’t one that buys electric cars.  In fact they are the ones voting to remove incentives to make them, charge fees to operate them, and want to subsidize their competitors fuel.

So if I’m a Tesla shareholder I’m asking myself if things are going the right direction.  I think it’s pretty simple.  Mosk went from being the Henry Ford of his generation to being the Henry Ford of his generation.

Maybe he will try to build a city in Brasil also.

fwiw, while Tuckems isn't normally a topic of conversation within this thread, he did come up in relation to possible use of twitter for a new show with which to own the libs. Looks like that's going to be delayed however as Fox completely demo'd the studio they built for him in Maine and hauled away all the equipment, so he has to completely rebuild it.

How would you even really think that was a Voltaire quote?  Voltaire lived when France had an absolutist monarch.  Were people really in doubt over who was ruling over them?

”Damn country is going to hell!  And do you know who is really pulling all the strings?”

”Yeah, the king.  We all have to agree that he has absolute power over us by divine right.  He even makes us call him the Sun King because - and I quote - France revolves around him just as the planets revolve around the Sun.”

”Ah, well, uh … you don’t really believe he is in charge, though, do you?  I mean, who is it that you really can’t criticize around here.  I think we all know.”

”Yeah, again, the king.  He cut a guy’s head off last week for making direct eye contact with him!  I think he’s in charge.”

So here's a story. My twitter account was suspended in the wake of J6 when I made a post "they should all hang from the gallows". I made the attempt to reinstate every now and then and was always denied. Didn't care enough to make a new account. On Friday, over three years since I was suspended, I get an email from Twitter Support saying they were re-evaluating suspended accounts and asked to provide why my account should be reinstated under the new criteria.  I responded for shits and giggles:

"My account was suspended by the old owners because I had an opinion. Please reinstate this account under the new criteria of the new owner."

And as of this morning, I am active again. So I imagine they're trying to get the numbers back up after the exodus. Unfortunately for them, I've spent my new life blocking, blocking, blocking. Even old Elmo and James Woods got a block. Not sure if that really creates more issues, but happy to oblige if it does. The other angle is that a suspended account can't be deleted. But now it finally can be, which I will do after a week or so of fun. Elmo so dumb.

Tensions are rising between the European Union and Elon Musk’s Twitter as France’s digital minister Jean-Noël Barrot threatened to block access to the site in Europe if it doesn’t adhere to the EU’s incoming Digital Services Act, which enforces new rules on social media and will go into effect this August.

“Disinformation is one of the gravest threats weighing on our democracies,” said Barrot on French radio network France Info. “Twitter, if it repeatedly doesn’t follow our rules, will be banned from the EU,” the French minister added.

Barrot’s threat comes two days after EU Internal Market Commissioner Thierry Breton announced that Twitter has withdrawn from the EU’s voluntary code to fight disinformation online, which other Silicon Valley companies like Meta — parent of Facebook and Instagram — Google and Microsoft have pledged to follow. Twitter has not confirmed that it is withdrawing from the code and did not respond to requests for comment.

While Elon Musk has claimed in interviews that there is less misinformation on Twitter since he purchased the site for $44 billion in October, former employees claim that a significant portion of the site’s content moderation team were part of the mass layoffs that have taken place following Musk’s arrival.

In the tweet announcing Twitter’s withdrawal from the voluntary code, Breton insisted that all social media sites will be legally obligated to take steps to combat disinformation to comply with the Digital Services Act, which goes into effect Aug. 25. Sites found in violation of the Digital Services Act face fines of up to 6% of the site’s annual revenue.

“Obligations remain. You can run but you can’t hide,” Breton wrote. “Our teams are ready for enforcement.”
