America has always had this banal aspect to its popular culture.  It didn't stop us from being the greatest technological power on earth for the last 50-75 years.  And, yeah, sure, we depended on the odd Hungarian, Kraut, Brit etc. to pull it off.

The main problem has been the underfunding and devaluation of public education that comes from you-know-who.

And let's not forget a culture of unrestrained capitalism that redirects some of the best minds and best educated into dubious rich-making endeavors like VC and PE.

We do not prioritize education. And I consider trades to require education. Underfunding? Not when we need a new football stadium or art class.

The "not enough engineers" argument is mostly a red herring.  The real problem for them is that the home grown ones know their value.

This. My kiddo had a very normal life in school. Also won State of Texas in BioChem and went to international science fair. White/Latina. Got her ride to an East Coast school paid by NASA. Still has a very normal life.

And she grew up watching the Simpsons, etc, but was also surrounded by books and taught learning is not bad.

That was kind of my comment: The tweet said Putin "wanted the Panama Canal" but what he really wants is to retaliate.  The ships mentioned in the Bloomberg article could be anywhere.

I'll look up where Panama stands in the ranking of ships in the world in just a second.

(Edit: here it is.  So, Panama is about to have a regime change, I guess.  The canal thing is a red herring for our intelligent and discerning voting populace.  The real problem for Putin that he's asked Trump to make go away is the banning of Russian LNG on Panamanian flagged ships).

WHAT?  You mean the unholy alliance between populist nativist fascists and evil oligarchs turned out to be....an unholy alliance?  Well, shock and surprise.

CSB. I added a new Twitter X account the other day to test something out. Used a new throwaway email account. I was asked my interests and who I wanted to originally follow. I didn't care about any of that so I picked sports, business and tech. Then followed the Major League Baseball account. X is showing me all of these far right tweets including Elon, Vivek and Charlie Kirk.

This. If anything there is a glut of Ph.Ds in this country. Why do you think so many are bouncing from post doc to post doc trying to find permanent work?

The problem is you can’t work a domestic Ph.D or Computer Science M.S. 80 hours a week for 60k a year with the threat of revoking their visa if they complain.

Gen X here who has seen a wide range of industries and employers throughout my career. I definitely have had bosses who demand too much and some who demand very little of their team. There is more attention to life balance today than in the 90s but I don't see a lowering of intelligence. I also find very dedicated employees in their 20s today. Sure a 20-something is never dedicated to a employer for life but they know that occurs in the opposite direction as well.

But management often does not and treats them like a commodity.

Oh how the turn tables. I wonder how MTG became such an authority on the intricacies of managing and staffing a large corporation? Maybe it was from her experience as a “part time coach” at a CrossFit gym?

Poor, uneducated MAGA voters are learning just how little they matter. Like Trump said - “I love the uneducated!”

Or maybe helping run the family-owned construction company in rural Georgia.  Y'know where they hire all the PhD level framers, roofers, and concrete-pourers.

That would require them to pay attention.

They only have the attention span to care about ‘issues’ for half a football season every 4 years.

In 2028, they’ll complain about trump and MAGA as if they didn’t vote for him. They’ll tell you your vote doesn’t count or mean shit even when they voted for this jackwagon multiple times and he won 2 of 3.

Dude.   They will never complain about Trump and MAGA.  Trump could personally come into their house, shoot their dog and rape their daughter, and they'd blame the "goddamned communist Demoncrats!"

I appreciate the sentiment but has the arts in public ed ever triumphed over sports?!? Hell, I wish there was more funding in the arts personally.

It comes down to some of these big tech companies want you to come in and immediately know what to do, and not have your 6 month learning curve. They’d rather hire an incredibly cheap foreign contractor in the same position and just fire them if they can’t keep up. There’s a lack of patience for molding tech talent.

No it has not. But the trades are rarely taught anymore. We are a push for college nation.

There are plenty of artists. There are not many art jobs. Need a plumber? Wait for an appointment or pay extra. Need an artist, I can find you quite a few ready to do some work tomorrow.

The arts are important. But they should not be deemed critical. Especially after a large Enchilada dinner.

Also, adding glitter to something you bought off Temu is not art. It is a craft. We confuse the two.

Coming soon to Trump’s America: detention centers all over the country to house “corrupt” Americans, i.e., those who oppose Trump.

❝China has built or expanded more than 200 specialized detention facilities nationwide to interrogate suspects ensnared in Xi Jinping’s widening anti-corruption drive, a CNN investigation has found, as the Chinese leader extends his crackdown beyond the ruling Communist Party to a vast swath of public sectors.

Since taking power in 2012, Xi has launched a sweeping campaign against graft and disloyalty, taking down corrupt officials as well as political rivals at an unprecedented speed and scale as he consolidated control over the party and the military.

Now well into his third term, the supreme leader has turned his relentless campaign into a permanent and institutionalized feature of his open-ended rule.

And increasingly, some of the most fearsome tools he has wielded to keep officials in line are being used against a much broader section of society, from private entrepreneurs to school and hospital administrators – regardless of whether they are members of the 99-million-strong party.

The expanded detention regime, named “liuzhi,” or “retention in custody,” comes with facilities with padded surfaces and round-the-clock guards in every cell, where detainees can be held for up to six months without ever seeing a lawyer or family members.

It’s an extension of a system long used by the party to exert control and instill fear among its members.❞

So delicious watching MAGA meltdown over the Elon H1B debate. You can tell that so many are conflicted in arguing that we need to allow companies to pay foreign workers less at the expense of Americans. It goes against their core beliefs and their heads are spinning.

its a great topic to bring up with maga acquaintances.

Yeah, those who have been gleefully watching this have to understand that MAGA doesn't really know this is happening and probably wont find out.   They'll continue to get screwed by the oligarchs and continue to blame everyone but themselves.

MAGA will realize that bringing in very different groups will often lead to fights. I’m unsure if the white, 40k/yr, blue collar worker is going to have much sympathy for an unemployed, white software engineer who is used to $200k and working from home.

people are quick to point to others as being lazy but won’t puts themselves in that category.
