Nah.

I dunno.

You have to remember that the concept of Federalism was completely different in 1860, when the united states was primarily understood to be a union of fully sovereign states, not a federal entity with constituent sovereigns until the outcome of the war made it so.

There were very few senior career officers at that time and a majority of them had attended West Point around the same time. Like most of them he considered himself a senior officer of the state that had appointed him to West Point. OF COURSE the civil war was about slavery, but for career officers in 1860, the obligation of sworn duty on both sides was  NOT a matter of sentimental attachment or loyalty- the senior officers (with few exceptions) broke along lines of where the state legislature landed on the question questions of secession- if you were appointed to West Point by Maryland you stayed. If you were appointed from Alabama you left.  Maryland and Delaware were slave states, who fought for the union, until the passage of the 13th amendment.

So Longstreet went with the bad guys, reluctantly. That said, he is pretty much the only example of a very senior confederate officer who served reconstruction publicly and enthusiastically after the war. He supported black citizenship and political equality, didn’t indulge the “lost cause,” and served the United States government in multiple posts at much personal and financial risk. At one point after the war he even led a mostly black Louisiana state militia and local police against white supremacists attempting to overthrow the government.

So it’s more for his redemptive post war service and example that I think Longstreet is deserving (Lee, Davis, all the rest) where others are not.

That may well be the most despicable thing they've done, in a sea of despicable things. Just wow.

I guess I should’ve known with NFL fans and rich white people. Probably went 90/10 dotard in that stadium.

Really odd watching the Super Bowl - a quintessential American pop culture thing - it’s like I’m having a dissociative experience - derealization / depersonalization - like I’m watching myself watch the game and like this world isn’t real - the one that I simply don’t feel welcome to participate in. It’s nuts. Tom Brady doing an anti-hate commercial, Fox News saying it’s for all Americans. It’s like 3 weeks have gone by, trans people have been erased and the world has moved on. Don’t hate no body, errybody is good, it’s actually a whole other level beyond the “he gets us” bullshit campaign, at least I knew that was propaganda. Super bizarre. I mean I’ll ignore it all and engage the game etc but so yall know. This shit takes a real toll of folks.

It did but I’m emo. Honestly when I saw that I thought of my boys and how they are 6-7 years away from being in that young adult taking on the world mode and I miss that quite a bit. Such a great time to be alive, young, optimistic, full of energy and naïveté.

“He gets us.” Dude. 90% of American Christians hate 80% of the people featured in that ad. “He hates all the same people you do” is all they hear and believe.

I get that and the fact that queer trans and other lgbtq folk don’t even get screen time is a whole other level - complete erasure. Don’t have to hate us because we don’t fucking exist. It’s like in 3 weeks completely erased so we don’t have to even think about whether it’s nice or mean to say something because there’s no such thing as a tranny.  Just look at the erasure of missing queer kids. It’s unreal, I’m seriously beside myself.

i am sorry to read this. All the best in hanging in there.

We have been a country devoid of compassion for some time now, but now, we are jetting past that to the next devolution. All this stop the hate shit is just noise until you know, the progressive left does or says anything.

HATER!

Now watch the commercials and enjoy your gaslighting.

I’ll be okay and I’m not just saying that. I am sharing my real time experience so folks at least know how visceral it all is. I’m fortunate in that I have a lot of LG elders some T elders too that have been through this before.

you seek LGBTQ enclaves, find beauty, enjoy people that are like you and love you, don’t take beautiful days and moments for granted, enjoy art, music, laughter, and usually you do these things in gorgeous places. There’s a reason why the gays occupy places like San Fransisco, Palm Springs, Puerto Vallarta, Provincetown, Key West, and on and on. My wife and I are almost done here and we will find our gay happy place soon. Alchemize it. That’s what we will do and on the other side we will be living a life better than what we have now and one assholes will actually envy.

Just saw the Fox News “for all America” commercial. Great propaganda move when you have a captive audience of billions.

Been there, done that.

I am sorry for what is transpiring for you personally. We are officially a nation run by garbage people. I have to watch this game because of work. I haven’t watched it since the Patriots-Seahawks. The entire thing feels like I stepped into a different timeline. Not fun at all watching the country torn down while millions of people care more about this game than the future for them and their family.

Well, you see, if there are commercials about it, no one has to actually do anything. We are all one big happy family now that dear leader is back in control.

On another note, getting rid of the penny may be the first thing Trump has ever done that I agree with, but I don't count on its implementation being well thought through.

I had an extremely enjoyable evening. Watched the Brutalist at Alamo, had nearly the entire theater to ourselves. Only one other couple there, and we chuckled about us all not wanting anything to do with the Super Bowl during the intermission.

It was a fantastic film.

Didn’t watch a minute of the Super Bowl. Lived my life instead and enjoyed some time outdoors and the studio.

Troph, don’t let the wretches, those so miserable with their own lives, pull the plug on yours.  This is one of those times where you do what you can and enjoy the love you share and time you have. That in itself eats at their core and makes them more untethered. Remember, misery loves company, don’t give them your time or peace.

The woman singing America the Beautiful today was, in her words, “canceled” by the mayor of New Orleans for singing at an outdoor Christian gathering in 2020. They were told not to remove the masks in public because of the spread of COVID, but did that matter to this paragon of virtue? You know the answer. It was all God’s master plan to get her to perform at the Super Bowl. I get so bent out of shape at these frauds using Jesus like this.
