Not to be too negative, but the US existing in its current form in 2028 seems a little optimistic to me right now. What that would mean for Trump running again, or elections in general, I have no idea.

The 22nd amendment does not say Trump is ineligible to be POTUS. It says he’s ineligible to be elected at POTUS.  
 

Thats a big loophole for the 12th.

The constitution also says a presidential election must be held every 4 years.

The only “loophole” is canceling elections by declaring martial law.

No, what I mean is that the 12th is what @jimmyjazz is citing about being VP.

 

12th: No one ineligible to BE president can be VP.

22nd: No POTUS can be ELECTED to a third term.  

Two different things. The Constitution only requires you to be over 35 and natural born citizen to BE president. And you can become President without being elected. 

2028: Vance selects Trump as VP, explicitly promises to step aside and let DJT take office. 
 

This is constitutionally murky but there is an argument.

I’ve always maintained that we aren’t having midterm elections because of some emergency he will create and use to justify it and from there the ball will start rolling. 
When someone says to me that they don’t think Trump will do something, I respond with “who’s going to stop him?”

Only takes 2/3 of legislatures/conventions to propose an amendment and 3/4 of legislatures/conventions to approve one. Would not be shocked to see 'conventions' of questionable legitimacy take place. Can almost guarantee one in Oregon and then I bet western Washington follows suit. You still need 4 but I'm not putting anything past this simulation.

Don’t you have to be eligible to be president to run for vice president?

also, in your scenario, I don’t think anyone who got elected president would voluntarily abdicate/resign. Might fall out of a window though.

Also, when the 12th was drafted and adopted, those two Art. II conditions were the only ones on POTUS' eligibility.  Did the 22nd create another condition of eligibility, or a term limit?

Clearly the people who wrote the Constitution and the Amendments never imagined a party or party members who would cuck themselves so severely as to let a two term president weasel his way back into the White House by having a patsy run for president with the "real" president running as VP.

Historically presidents have retired from public life but what if one didn’t? No prohibition on running for office and becoming speaker or president pro temp, and being in the line of succession. 
 

Our institutions (and most others) are designed for people who can be trusted to respect them, which was what John Adams was trying to get at when he said “Our constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.”

It's darkly funny to see the lawyers STILL not understanding that act like they're playing chess when the new game they're playing is Russian roulette. Even being at this table is a bad fuckin time, rules and laws have left us long ago because they simply couldn't keep up - how else could we end up here?

We’ve had mid-war presidential elections before. To re-elect the guy responsible for the 22nd, even.  Back when we still used to amend the constitution and treat it as intended as a living document, and not some religious artifact that is perfection incarnate.
