Looking into my crystal ball...

Quote

The Trump administration is on track to run out of cash for disaster relief this summer, and the House’s top appropriator has been asking for an emergency request from the White House.

FEMA estimates that it will be down to about $5 billion in the disaster relief fund in June — just in time for the start of Atlantic hurricane season — before running out of cash by July or August. By the time the new fiscal year dawns in October, the Trump administration predicts it will have $8 billion in disaster costs it cannot pay, unless Congress clears an emergency aid package in the meantime....

Noem has privately told administration officials that she wants to eliminate FEMA’s role in funding long-term rebuilding efforts and halt multibillion-dollar grant programs that help communities prepare for disasters, six people told POLITICO’s E&E News earlier this year.

Not saying the west coast won't potentially burn down or be struck by an earthquake. But the likelihood of that is lower than the gulf and SW states getting devastated from a hurricane.

One thing I heard pointed out because of how Biden didn't deliver on student debt (despite it being via the acts of Republicans) Trump has been able to say "See this is a promise that Biden made that he couldn't deliver, come to me." I'm not saying it's right (and in fact I think it's moronic to believe Trump on anything), but being able to point out how a guy can't deliver is powerful stuff.

And super-ironic given Trump's record on delivering.

But the same thinking applies to the CPFB and many other things that exist to protect regular people from robber barons.

Like forcing people to repay fucked up student debt, people should be forced to pay $25-50 per overdraft because they agreed to in a contract of adhesion.

I heard Anne Applebaum on Prof G today and maybe this is just what has to happen?

Her explanation about Alexander Navalny was that he was able to link the corruption to the people and how they were directly hurt and it let them really see Putin was corrupt.

This likely is what is going to be needed. And the Dems need to be ready with this. When a big event happens and FEMA doesn't show up there needs to be a clearly spelling out of Well DOGE cut X, which reduced FEMA, we warned them about future issues and now here we are - you don't have fresh water or food.

Seriously though.  This is the message.  These exact words.  This is what Dems should be saying.  And add - its' the Republicans who set it up this way.

Dems should be hammering, hammering, hammering Trump Tax over every microphone all day and night long.  And what makes that tax even more brutal to pay, is when you're unemployed.  And regardless of what they say, they are still paying it.  And yes, he did that.  Tie that shit around Dotards neck and don't let him forget it.

I don't think you guys fully understand what is happening here. I keep hearing about these so-called Dem strategies. As I said before the D party only gets in power when people are frustrated with the Rs. Why? They can't beat the racists and the other people have tuned them out. The problem is ALL our politicians are lining their pockets and allowing Capitalism to eat the middle class. Until someone runs against the corps and uber wealthy we are going to be like this. High taxes on the rich. Get lobbyist out of Washington. Caps on donations. No investment in the market by politicians. Close tax loopholes. You get the picture.

Dems are the only party that advocates for campaign finance reform, watchdogs, nonpartisan redistricting commissions, and judges who support voting rights. The list goes on and on.

And yes, dems can also be corrupt. And when they are action is taken. But here’s what will blow your mind. People like you, who lump the two parties together, are the reason no action is taken because it conflates who is behind things like the Citizens United decision.

Repeat after me: Democrats want to get money out of politics. Voters don’t care because they can’t tell the difference.

Exactly.  My entire life Dems have been advocating for the middle class and generally trying to make the system fairer for the average citizen.  Even when they succeed in passing such legislation, the republican SC strikes it down with various forms of Calvinball that do not apply to republicans.  The real problem is all of this is relatively boring and does not stimulate the amygdala like hate and fear and therefore is significantly less motivating and profit making as the rep platform .  The only counter is to redirect the hate and fear towards the billionaire class, but this will require ruthlessness, exaggeration,  and outright dishonestly to really light up those fear centers.  This is unsavory, and educated people will recognize it for what it is and call it out,  therefore the dems will never do it.

I guess then de minimis would have exempted small purchases.  Not quite sure how that would work.

Not an expert but it is basically the Temu model.

1. Pick a product made in China that you can list on Amazon.  Maybe you make a subtle design change to it, maybe it is a ripoff of something else that has brand recognition like these shoes I just got, similar to Sketchers.

2. Set up a digital storefront

3. Arrange for the in country exporter to label items for customer delivery in the US and ship them as if they were bought directly from the factory or exporter. (Ignore the US Middleman's storefront)

4. Items get around the bulk freight import tariffs based on the de minimis exemption
