We dont have a time machine or any true influence with government leadership so its all moot anyway.

Mistakes may have been made. Thats always the case with tragedies. If you can do anything to help then thats the healthiest way of dealing with this imo.

I’m sorry everyone. Families near and dear to us have missing kids. I’m lashing out as some sort of subconscious defense mechanism. I’ll stop.

No apology needed. I don’t have people close to me but it still hits hard and some of us cope by getting angry. I’m fucking livid at local officials and camp management. I’ll stop short of going on the rant I want to - maybe it’s my lawyer brain - but I always worry about worst case. Man I want to go off but I’m also going to stop now.

Truly tragic events have unfolded and it's heartbreaking.  People are sad, and mad, and that's to be expected.

I'd like to ask everyone to please keep this thread clear of infighting and finger-pointing and especially keep it clear of cloak room stuff.  There are plenty of other forums and threads to discuss all of that.

Anyway, pouring rain again at my house, it's almost as dark as night, and every single drop here, will go straight into Lake Travis.

Should be enough rain to convince LCRA it'll be fine to let some more new housing developments put straws in the lake.

TravisClub golf course isn’t going to water itself…

I always remember reading that plaque next to the falls when visiting as a kid, that showed an older black and white photo of a flash flood at the falls and thinking ‘no way’.

Welp. Yes way.

Welp, one of the confirmed fataliies is a 9 year old who was one of my wife's preschool students in Tarrytown.  Her brother is one of my grandson's close friends.

Damn. So sorry to hear that, man. A close friend of ours also lost a student in this. Fucking heartbreaking.

It’s pouring here. Fucking pouring.

in my view the local authorities messed up. If camp mystic had  moved all of the girls to where they later evacuated (after the littles had been swept away) the 660 plus campers and counselors we wouldn’t be sitting here waiting for names. It’s beyond heartbreaking. Sorry for the rambling. Like everyone else I’m trying to cope. And comfort those in my own family whose best friends are waiting for word of their own daughters. And I know many of you are doing the same.

fuck.

Only thing I can wrap my brain around was a scouting event I took my son to years back.   He got sick and we had to leave.   As we were driving out a massive storm hit and washed away many of the tents/campsites and parents later told us they had to hide in their vehicles.  We spent the day trying to reach dads and family members to make sure everyone was ok.  But this.   I just can’t.

Everyone saying "my radar app is saying that this will..." need to understand that radar app doesn't know shit.  Storms do what they want.  While you can say 60% chance of rain or whatever, you can't predict exactly where that rain will fall.

On a side note, aside from the 10 foot rise, forecasts are a potential 10-20 more feet in Travis.

Nevermind that they all use the same sources for their radar maps, and we have been defunding weather radar systems and deactivating data sharing systems all over the place.

Someone said up thread this is complete outlier, and I fear that these data points are going to be less and less the outlier as we lean harder into fucking the environment and climate

Brother and his family were staying with some friends at their place on the water in Barton Creek Lakeside. Just talked to 'em and they're high and dry, but he said his buddy's dock and boat are nowhere to be seen this morning.

Some close friends of ours are at their place on the other side of the river in Muleshoe Bend. House is high up on a cliff, so no danger there, but might be stuck for a bit. Also missing a dock.

Yeah I thought of that plaque as well.  We camp at Ped Falls at least once per year.  The past several it's been sad, barely any water.  But I've seen it flooding like this before, too.  Water moving so fast and heavy you can't even see the falls, it just looks like a small bump-down in the river level.

I have a feeling a lot of Austin area residents are going to know someone involved.

I was with the parents yesterday at the reunification site. They were still clinging on to hope when I left. They all were.

When young and dumb, I camped in Enchanted Park and it rained overnight.
Some heavy rain when dark.

But coming from Houston I didn’t think much of it. I was ‘used to the rain’.

Morning it’s still raining.
Friend and I get a, no other way to describe it but ‘I think we need to gtfo feeling.

We start booking it.
We almost got trapped in the park.
I have a snipit in my head of being cut off at more than a couple locations due to high water and that dry creek bed on the eastern side of the park swollen with angry water and full on logs / trees being swept away.

Haven’t thought about that in years.
PTSD activated!

It feels like Austin television outlets have gone way downhill.  I can only find some hacks on KVUE reporting on this.  Are there any official websites that are updating on rescues, etc.?

All of these media resources and it's apparently amateur hour across the board.

I have a vivid memory as a young scout of an assistant scout master forcing us to break camp in the middle of the night in Perdernales during a pop up storms, with more than a bit of panic and urgency. I was tired and annoyed at the time, but thankful today.

I’m sure it’s the timing.

Memorial Day weekend, sure.

but I’m sure none of the TV stations have folks on standby for weather coverage on 4th of July weekend
