If you like stories like this one -- how stuff is invented or how scientific discoveries and experiments were conducted -- read Bill Bryson's "A Short History of Nearly Everything." Fantastic read, page turner, and filled with the craziest shit (like the quoted  story and photo).

Actually he's 70.

But he was 61 when this photo was taken and shared for the first time on the internet.

Or did a joke just go over my head?

Brother lived just outside Bangkok for a while, and his house was super open - multiple open areas where walls should be.  Very tropical/resort-ish.  One day he was out of country on business and got a text from his wife w/ this picture:

No photo description available.

Apparently it was found in the wine rack.  His comments to everyone's questions under the pic:

Answers as follows:

the local pest control guys were johnny on the spot and there within 30 minutes to get rid of it. they were pretty happy as they could sell it to a snake farm or to someone to eat.

We have had a few cobras around the house when we first moved in. We had a dog at the time that was pretty wimpy but loved killing cobras so things worked out pretty well.

We changed our pest and snake control guys the beginning of this year to a cheaper option. Not a good decision. we are now back to the original guys who come often and check things out. We are probably ok now as they keep the snakes out with sulphur which the snakes won't cross. We did see a python stretched across the road about 50 meters from the house which didn't die after we ran over it with the car. Generally though they don't want to be around us so we're ok.

the locals eat cobra stew but I stopped at rattlesnake fritters.

I'm all over a mongoose as our current dog and vagrant cats don't do much about the snakes. [my 2 other brothers offered to pitch in for a pet Mongoose]

[wife] does deserve some credit for getting rid of the snake, but let's not forget my contribution. I was able to maintain my composure and continue with reading my emails in my office. Quite admirable really.

Mom, sorry the one that was here when you were here was a python slightly different and less poisonous than a cobra. but it seems like we can arrange whatever variety you would like!

Appreciate the concern, but the wine and I have survived to fight another day!

One freaking cobra in my house is enough for a lifetime, thank you. I would be transferring back on the next plane, whether there was a job on the other side or not.

Sure, but when I try it, it's 'not helpful' and 'excessive' and 'really not what we meant when we asked about skills not on your resume'.

I would have to have trailer balls drove into the rock about every foot, and NowThis my way around it. Sit on a ball, clench, reposition, then, move to the next, and repeat.

Seems a whole lot easier to just say no, but you do you.

He's got that same setup in his living room, so its really not that difficult for him.

I am in this picture of Preikestolen (pulpit rock) in Norway. A friend had a drone and took pics and video during our hike. I am on the mountain side of the crack, facing AWAY from the void. It was terrifying for me, as I have a debilitating fear of heights. But I had to suck it up and make the hike because I was the leader of the group.

Many people have no problem walking right up to the edge, dangling their feet off of it. In this social media age, many do ridiculous things like handstands also.

Zoom in on the top right corner of the pic. There is a little girl there, behind a teenage couple who have their back to her. She is not their child. I don’t know where her parents are. She’s just casually hanging out, on a 1,982 foot cliff. If that doesn’t give you the willies, nothing will.

Despite approx 300,000 visitors annually, apparently there are only 4 recorded deaths from falls there.

One of my colleagues brought this to share at the top. It was greatly appreciated.

Yup. That’s where I am in the pic. Facing away from the void. I never crossed the crack.
