two honest questions from someone who hasn’t been to the theater in over a decade:

1)how do you sit through 3+ hours of previews + a movie?

2)why don’t they have intermissions?

90% of the movies i watch at home are from the 90’s, back when keeping it a tight 90-100 minutes was SOP. movies have been so goddamn long in run time since that titanic movie that i just can’t even get up to spend 4-5 hours of my life + an exorbitant amount of money to go watch a 3 hour movie that absolutely does not need to be 3 hours long. seriously- how do y’all do it?

Did you all get the Leo DiCaprio trailer that gave zero info what the movie was about? We looked at each other and said "what?"

It’s the new Paul Thomas Anderson movie based on the novel Vineland by Thomas Pynchon.

See it in a luxury theater. Reserve your seat. Call ahead and find out how long the promos will run before showtime.

Ours had 26 minutes of promos. So nice to walk in anytime 20 minutes after the scheduled start.

yeah, that's how we do it.  Buy tickets online, show up 15 minutes late, get settled in our seats, order beers/wine through the  app.

Saw it Thursday night and really enjoyed it.  The story was fine, nothing groundbreaking but well done for what it was.  And the film and sound work were incredible.  There were times when they made the racecars sound like monsters, fire-breathing dragons and such.  Cool stuff.

Those cars sound awesome in person.  Just saying.

They do sound good, although the old V8s sounded better, and the V10s were unbelievable.

I think that was purposeful.  Banking on people seeing because Leo and PTA, while not giving up any story.

I got a few hours into Vineland. It’s basically Inherent Vice set in Northern California. I am not expecting much. It will need a truly wild Del Toro performance to lift the material.

I saw F1 at the Lincoln Center IMAX, which, like the Bullock, is a real IMAX.  The story was predictable, but the racing scenes were fucking awesome.

I’m very glad you enjoyed it!

I liked it quite a bit. Maybe a thinking man’s Bruckheimer movie + a love letter to F1.

The volume wasn’t right. Not sure if it’s an Apple thing or a theater thing. Cars weren’t loud enough. Granted, it’s been a few years, but open-wheel races are loud as hell.

Further F1 thoughts:

Spoiler

- I think we needed the action is the juice scene with Pitt and Bardem. Sonny certainly alludes to it on the balcony and in his final conversation with Pearce, but it could have been a great scene and explained his mission statement.

- I could watch Brad Pitt play the stoic, coolest guy in any room in a dozen more movies, but I’m seeing a trend here in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Wolfs, and F1. I hope he gets out of his comfort zone, makes some choices, and goes for it soon. Then again, he might not give a shit. He knows that Lifetime Achievement Oscar is waiting for him whenever he wants it.

- No problems with Damson Idris’ performance. They asked for a cocky F1 driver with a chip on his shoulder and he gave us exactly that.

- Bardem is barely in it. A couple more scenes with Pitt would been great.

- Kerry Condon is a terrific actress. I’ve liked her in everything since I first noticed her as a jockey in Luck.

- The team building stuff really worked. I wish they winked at Major League because the plots are identical.

- Good popcorn summer movie that looked great on IMAX film/screen.

Really enjoyed the movie.  Only slight criticism

Spoiler

Kind of felt the climax of the movie - Pitt winning - he should've beaten someone, rather than the top 2 guys take each other out.  I get the silent flying thing, just felt we needed that "can he do it?" moment rather than what seemed like a "just don't wreck" moment where you see no other cars.

I liked it a lot.  My quibble is that a movie that long needs to build up the rivals.  They should have followed up with the interviews and show us why Ferrari and Mercedes are the big dogs

A cool $60 for 2 IMAX tickets at Regal. I’m going in about an hour. This movie better rule.

What? Even for IMAX that seems crazy.

1) I don't take my seat until the previews are almost over. I showed up to F1 about 20 minutes late, watched a preview or 2 and then it was showtime.

2) No intermission required for this length of film, though I prefer shorter movies, and this one could have lost 15-20 minutes and been fine.

I don't go to the movie theater much anymore, but for a big film like F1 or Top Gun: Maverick, the experience is worth it to me.

didn't they film actual races and then like 'insert' the APX car footage on somehow, i think...i dunno, but that was fun! 👍 cinematography and sound accolades coming their way. but holy crap was it Bruckheimer-y 😆

Pitt does seem to be kind of phoning it in lately...but he's still charisma and coolness poured into a very nice package 😛

Shea Whigham continues to be the most ubiquitous man in Hollywood lol

previews:

Leo and PTA...can't wait. The Smashing Machine is Oscar bait for The Rock. and The Odyssey is gonna have quite the build-up to live up to! 🤨

Eddington opens tomorrow, it's next on the list. A24 just doesn't seem to miss!

Yes in some cases they "re-skinned" actual F1 race cars from actual races and digitally overwrote the image with their fake team's livery.

Also, at many tracks they also ran their fake team's real cars during breaks in the action between practice sessions or qualifying, to get scenes with their cars and drivers on the actual tracks in real time.

And then a couple of times, they actually pulled up their fake team's real cars to the back of the grid at the start of an actual F1 race, to get some establishing shots and some footage of their cars taking off at the same time as the other real, actual F1 cars. In those cases their fake cars peeled off at some point during the first lap, so as not to interfere with the actual racecars running the real race.

If you noticed, the Apex team was almost always starting in the final two places on the grid.  That's because they wanted them to be filmed on the grid in real life without interfering, but it also worked for the plot of the movie because, in fact, their cars were supposed to be quite crappy until their upgrades arrived late in the season, and they would have been qualifying poorly, anyway.

Anyway, completely agree they did some creative and innovative things with both sound and cameras, and they should be nominated for a lot of awards.

Read an interview somewhere with I think Pitt where he commented how different this movie was to make, because they were generally allowed one take during an actual F1 race. There was no way to go back and repeat.
