Assuming grandma isn't purposefully lying to make their grandkid sound awesome, I would guess she's getting relayed information from mom/dad coming from some trainer/coach of a select team that is spouting off about colleges he's connected to, and just mistook that as colleges in contact with the child.

He said scholarship offers lol

Doubling down is a choice. You were even given a nice out by cmontexas and you didn’t take it.

I’m not clicking links to stories written for link bait. No serious FBS program is offering a 10 year old a fucking scholarship. I can’t even believe this is a discussion. Have you ever spoken to a football scout or college coach? Hell , even a HS staffer? No one gives a shit about a kid’s talent until they’ve hit puberty. That’s a basic component to all of it. It’s the minimum table stakes.

I see you are doubling down on your literal interpretation of what an “offer” to a 10 year old means.

Do you honestly believe that presenting a “offer” to young kids involves actually pulling out official offer documents and giving them to the family? Come on. You are being completely obtuse.

The point, as I already explained again in the second post to help you see your obtuseness, is that there are college programs that know who this kids is, they are following him, they are talking to the family and “offering” them scholarships. It doesn’t take much thought to understand that these offers are about as official as one would expect them to be. Good grief.

And I really feel bad about not providing enough proof to satisfy the demanding posters on Surly so here :

Do we have proof that this kid hasn’t gone through puberty?  We need to ask that grandma to find out.

@Dbeasy seems like he knows a lot about making offers to ten year olds so I don’t see why we don’t take him at his word.

To be fair I remember playing  little league against Danny Peoples in the fifth grade, mind you he wasn’t getting offers, but it was crystal fucking clear he was different and would be a D1 baseball player.  Played basketball against some eventual D1 players in middle school, it was crystal clear. But no one was making offers, that’s certain. But hey, grandma’s boy is special alright.

I too am officially offering this young student athlete a scholarship to West ridge assuming he is out of district… but we’ll need to see pics of mom and confirm her fertility (looking for 2-3 more prospects). On top of that, there is an exclusive NIL deal where can he can deliver hot dogs at Westlake CC while his new sponsor makes the turn.

You’re going down this year Hill Country.

In relation to the conversation about how to recruit high school going forward, I had a really interesting conversation with a friend who is the grandmother of a 10 year old kid in California that is supposedly already getting massive recruiting attention.

She’s not a huge football fan but said that a bunch of the major programs have already been hounding them and have offered scholarships. At age 10. Amazing how deep the recruiting goes these days. I asked if Texas is in there but she didn’t know.

The grandmother:

I think it’s only fair now that we all share stories about the one time from our youth where we played against the future NFL player and we knew it then

ill start by having to play against Leonard Davis.  Who is probably also offered at 10 years old because he was 65 300 pounds then.

Wednesday - Bobby

While almost everyone is concentrating on portal transfers, there is also the factor of bowl opt-outs.

As of right now, two seniors and one junior are opting out:  Anthony Hill, Ethan Burke and Jaylon Guilbeau.

The why behind Hill’s decision speaks for itself. He’s already announced his intentions to enter the NFL draft.

Burke also makes a lot of sense. He is coming off perhaps his best game ever as a Longhorn and is considered a top two-round pick. No need for him to risk injury.

As for Guilbeau, it’s a bit of a conundrum. At best, he’s considered a late-round pick and more likely a undrafted free agent.

**

Others who have not opted out and are practicing with the team:

- Jack Endries

- Tre Wisner

- Jelani McDonald

- The entire starting OL

- Manny Muhammad

**

There will very likely be more portal announcements today and the rest of the week.

Steve Sarkisian and staff are meeting with players all week long, including some key conversations that are still to come.

Guilbeau opting out of the bowl game, unless he is hurt, reminds me of when Brennan Eagles opted out of the 2020 Alamo Bowl to "declare for the NFL draft".

What type of advice are these kids getting?

Intriguing Names in the Early Portal | Wednesday AM

Intriguing Names in the Early Portal | Wednesday AM

By CJ Vogel

Most Intriguing Portal Names to Enter as of Dec. 10.

***

Wanted to compile some interesting names that have announced intentions to the portal so far.

This does not guarantee Texas will be after any of these prospects, but for now these names are what stands out the most among the early portal entrants.

Also, keep in mind: There will be many, many more big fish to enter the portal over the next three weeks. Based off the portal entrants now, this is like playing a round of golf and digging the ball out of the cup on the 2nd hole. That's where we are at currently.

But anyways, to the list.

***

Clemson Junior DB Khalil Barnes

2025 Stats: 40 tackles, 2 pass breakups

The 2025 numbers are rather lackluster, but Barnes recorded 7 INT, 9 PBU, 3 forced fumbles, a fumble recovery and a sack in his first two seasons at Clemson. There are obvious comparisons to Andrew Mukuba from a Texas side, and his career developmental track fits that very well given the breakout freshman year. Still, Clemson fans weren't entirely upset to see him go which were followed by some vocal spats on twitter between his camp and the Clemson coaches.

Duke Freshman RB Nate Sheppard

2025 Stats: 178 carries, 962 yards, 10 touchdown, 5.4 yards per carry

On the hoof, the numbers are fantastic for a young running back. Though, Sheppard's frame provides much of the same for the Texas running game which has already lacked a consistent big-body in the room for two consecutive years. Still, should Tre Wisner enter the NFL Draft, this would be a seamless transition for the 5-foot-10-inch, 195-pound running back out of Mandeville, Louisiana.

Michigan State WR Nick Marsh

2025 Stats: 59 receptions, 662 yards, 6 TD, 11.2 yards per reception, 7 drops

For my money's worth, the top wide receiver in the portal at the moment. Marsh burst onto the scene with a tremendous 650-yard freshman campaign in 2024. While the stat sheet isn't entirely bleak, there was a level of expectation that wasn't met in East Lansing this year to some degree, with drops becoming an issue towards the back end of the season. Still, the quarterbacking situation was anything but helpful. Marsh will warrant big $ in the portal, but is he a fit at Texas? Given the rest of the room he feels like a cut and copy of what the room already possesses.

Purdue DL Jamarrion Harkless

2025 Stats: 12 games started, 13 tackles, 2.5 sacks, 2.5 TFL

Immediately, this name caught my attention. Harkless saw 423 snaps in 2025, meeting the typical threshold of who Texas has historically targeted out of the portal on the defensive line. The 10 pressures and 2.5 sacks would have been in the top 3 for interior defensive linemen on this current Texas team as well. Does that mean this is a slam dunk? No. But he checks boxes that we have seen Texas pursue in the past.

North Carolina LB Khmori House

2025 Stats: 81 tackles, 2.5 TFL, one sack, one interception, and a forced fumble

House is the linebacker in the country and perhaps the best overall defensive player that has entered to this point. Does Texas go big game hunting for its linebacking position? Or do they rock with Lefau, Smith, Barnes, Atkinson and find an additional depth piece with tools. I lean the latter. On top of this, Oklahoma was a school I was told to keep an eye on for this one.

Kentucky LB Landyn Watson

2025 Stats: 21 total tackles, 237 total snaps

The stat sheet wasn't necessarily the prettiest in 2025, but there is value in experience. As I mentioned in the House blurb, could a rotational piece at linebacker fit more of what Texas wants in the portal at the LB spot? I tend to lean that direction. We have seen several times when central Texas natives return to Austin for a major senior season – Watson is a Hutto native, and probably would not be a major expense in the NIL department.

Arizona State LT Josh Atkins

2025 Stats: 792 snaps, 3 sacks allowed, 5 penalties committed

Atkins is in for a pay day out of the portal, as are a majority of offensive tackles who enter. Now, I mentioned this previously in another thread and stand by it – I am not of the belief Texas should be taking players then transitioning from one position to another. That is what you would need to do with Atkins here. Top level interior prospects have not yet entered at a level in which I would have expected, so for now, you are left with a large number of offensive tackles getting their name out there as quickly as possible.

Protection got a lot better when we actually put our best five on the field.

With the holes in our RB room, shouldn't our first call be Baugh and see what it would take?

Kewan Lacy of Ole Miss is reported to be our top target.  If we hire Baugh's RBs coach, that could change. I'm sure we've contacted Baugh's camp already since he'd be #2 if Lacy is #1.

Burke's draft slot depends on how he tests at the combine/pro day IMHO.

Would Brad Spence also fit in this mix?  I dont recall exactly where he played last year, DE or OLB, but might he fit the Trey Moore role of LB for us next year?
