Spinning up a news thread to collect the insanity in LA. The US Army is deploying combat troops into LA, with orders that state that protesting is rebellion. Further, the Presidential Memo that is the basis for their orders states that for the next 60 days SecDef Hegseth has been delegated the authority to deploy soldiers domestically as he sees fit.

Copy/pasted the Presidential Memo in spoiler below if you don't feel like clicking through the link:

MEMORANDUM FOR THE SECRETARY OF DEFENSE

               THE ATTORNEY GENERAL

               THE SECRETARY OF HOMELAND SECURITY

SUBJECT:       Department of Defense Security for the Protection of Department of Homeland Security Functions

Numerous incidents of violence and disorder have recently occurred and threaten to continue in response to the enforcement of Federal law by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and other United States Government personnel who are performing Federal functions and supporting the faithful execution of Federal immigration laws.  In addition, violent protests threaten the security of and significant damage to Federal immigration detention facilities and other Federal property.  To the extent that protests or acts of violence directly inhibit the execution of the laws, they constitute a form of rebellion against the authority of the Government of the United States.

In light of these incidents and credible threats of continued violence, by the authority vested in me as President by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, I hereby call into Federal service members and units of the National Guard under 10 U.S.C. 12406 to temporarily protect ICE and other United States Government personnel who are performing Federal functions, including the enforcement of Federal law, and to protect Federal property, at locations where protests against these functions are occurring or are likely to occur based on current threat assessments and planned operations.  Further, I direct and delegate actions as necessary for the Secretary of Defense to coordinate with the Governors of the States and the National Guard Bureau in identifying and ordering into Federal service the appropriate members and units of the National Guard under this authority.  The members and units of the National Guard called into Federal service shall be at least 2,000 National Guard personnel and the duration of duty shall be for 60 days or at the discretion of the Secretary of Defense.  In addition, the Secretary of Defense may employ any other members of the regular Armed Forces as necessary to augment and support the protection of Federal functions and property in any number determined appropriate in his discretion.

To carry out this mission, the deployed military personnel may perform those military protective activities that the Secretary of Defense determines are reasonably necessary to ensure the protection and safety of Federal personnel and property  The Secretary of Defense shall consult with the Attorney General and the Secretary of Homeland Security prior to withdrawing any personnel from any location to which they are sent.  The Secretaries of Defense and Homeland Security may delegate to subordinate officials of their respective Departments any of the authorities conferred upon them by this memorandum.

                               DONALD J. TRUMP

They've also been airlifting in ammo and more officers using blackhawks in home depot parking lots. They're gearing up for things to get loud.

OP should work for the news outlets with titles like that.

Should National Guard be there to interrupt protests?  absolutely not.

Should they be there to control riots and protect property?  debatable.

Combat Team is literally in the name of those deployed. So yeah, pretty accurate title. What do you have issues with?

It is California National Guard.  Tomato/tomater.

DIL is a member of the CNG.  Hoping she is in no way involved.  Not deployed yet.

The unit's name is "79th Infantry Combat Brigade". They are trained warriors. You send them places you want to kill people.

There's a reason you separate military and the police. One fights the enemies of the state, the other serves and protects the people. When the military becomes both, then the enemies of the state tend to become the people

LOL.  Educate me motherfucker.  You gotta be shitting me.

Look, I'm not remotely defending the decision, because I disagree with it; but the thread title might as well be "Trump places CA under martial law."

The sad thing, is that it is not outside the realm of possibilities.

So… you agree? Your logic defies your conclusion

Yeah dude I don't think that's what the national guard is for.

Yes, it is.  Every National Guardsman that I know who served since 2001 had at least one deployment to Iraq or Afghanistan during their service.

That has nothing to do with my comment. I know what the national guard is. I don't think when they get deployed their main objective is to "kill people".

What the fuck do you think those rifles, pistols, machine guns, grenade launchers, and mortars are for?

When deployed during national disasters it’s for their logistics expertise and expansive logistics capabilities when civilian resources are limited, constrained or insufficient. what expertise is needed for what Trump is calling a rebellion?

After hurricanes and shit yea I agree with you. What is the point of deploying them here?

Let’s be clear he wants to send in the active duty proper military forces but he can’t. NG is the next best option and he gets the benefit of comparing it to other state side NG deployments for those that won’t or can’t think critically. The fact that anyone sees this differently is just being obtuse.

In all honesty, I've been a little busy this weekend and now just catching up on all of this.

To begin, what are the protests about?  ICE raids?

LA protesters chased ICE officers into their buildings and generally prevented them from doing a gestapo. No officers getting swarmed or anything, just lining up shoulder to shoulder and shouting "shame" at them

If there was actually a LEGIT reason, I'd bet everything I own that it would not be the "why" for Trump.

This is pretty scary.  Feels like a test run.

Here's a link to the actual memorandum if anyone wants to see it: https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2025/06/department-of-defense-security-for-the-protection-of-department-of-homeland-security-functions/

2 things scare me:

1. "To the extent that protests or acts of violence directly inhibit the execution of the laws, they constitute a form of rebellion against the authority of the Government of the United States."

- Hmmm...which laws?  Any laws?  What about a large, but completely peaceful protest that blocks a street?  Could that be considered inhibiting the execution of laws?

2. "In addition, the Secretary of Defense may employ any other members of the regular Armed Forces as necessary to augment and support the protection of Federal functions and property in any number determined appropriate in his discretion."

- So this also gives SecDef the authority to deploy regular troops, should he feel it necessary.  Also, this statement does not seem to limit it to this location/protest.

[edit] Just re-reading this really makes it sink in for me.  First, the press has been labeled as completely untrustworthy.  Now, protests are being equated to rebellion.  When do we wake up?

Well, remember, these are Trumpco's fanciful interpretations of the laws and constitution that considerably err on the side of executive power.

Yeah, it's becoming clear that the main criteria for deportation and visa revocation are a) brown, from somewhere south and b) not a citizen.  And even b) is becoming debatable.  Alleged political activity is just a cover from a) and b).

At this point, Trump is just trying to pump up the deportation numbers, he doesn't give a fuck who he actually deports.

Regarding deportations.....  During the early Obama Administration.

We're most of those deportations just brown, or a little bit from everywhere?

My GF is here legally with a valid visa and doesn't participate in stupid political BS that could get her deported. She doesn't work here illegally or overstay her visa.

So no, not worried.

I have nothing against you at all. So please don’t take this the wrong way. if she’s coming and going from Mexico to and from the US then y’all need to make plans for if she is detained / sent back. Who to call, how to inform you if you aren’t together. Make sure her phone is clean, etc etc. you really should be concerned. Hell I’m concerned for me and I am a white US citizen.

They can't deploy active-duty military in the manner he wants, so he has to go the National Guard route, something that many Presidents have done in the past.

You know I don't like the guy, but there is a huge difference between the National Guard and regular US Army soldiers or US Marines.

Is Trump trying to fuck around and see if he can get active duty troops deployed domestically and violate the Constitution?  I have no doubt he would like to, but at the end of the day, if he could pull it off, he would have went straight to the regulars and not the National Guard.
