SC’s favorite go-to shirt is a burnt orange mesh. Think of Scott Glenn’s character from Urban Cowboy. I think he was wearing a classic mesh while he was beating the shit out of Sissy. That plus cargo shorts and his Hey Dudes and he’s a joy to be seen around.

I also don’t have any statistics to back it up, but just watching last season it feels like we had a lot of forced fumbles that we didn’t recover, more so than usual. I’d be curious if anyone had stats and whether my gut is right or completely wrong.

There are lies...damned lies...and statistics...

Good discussion on the DL for those with the time and inclination. Brief mention of Myron Charles potential from Bobby. Be interesting to see whether he makes his presence felt this season. My thoughts are Texas will, or should be, tough to run against this season, not just for the DL but also with a seasoned tandem of Ant Hill and Leona Lefau in tow. Which may end up testing the secondary more as opponents seek the easier path. OTH, that ridiculous EDGE room along with Ant Hill getting after the QB should also help in that regard.

Only read the first page, but am interested in coaching moves.  Are you saying we hired Alina? For real?  He's gotta be at least 70, which is fine for a head coach, but a position coach is more of a grind job I would think.  And what about the king of bad charma, Gideon? Is he gone yet?

I will never forget the craziness of Gideon.  If he dropped the one he caught, and caught the one he dropped, chances are 90% plus we have two more national championships.   Everybody remembers Tech, but some people forget the BCS game against Alabama, when he did a wonderful job of catching the interception, but it was fourth down.  Drop it dude!

Much like January 1984 with Craig Curry and Jitter Fields,  it will always be too soon.

Our defense is better than the 85 bears. Solid against those guys is first ballot HOF against the rest of our schedule.

I know I'm basically pissing in the ocean here, but the '85 Bears defense kinda sucks as an analogy any time it's used.

The '85 Bears defense's front 7 were obviously amazing, but what really made it dominant was a short-term schematic advantage; most NFL offenses ran play-action, runs setting up deep passes. So the Bears put 8 in the box and blitzed like crazy. Yes, their front 7 was amazing, but their DBs were dubious; the one time they played a team that could throw and throw well, they got punked, and only dodged them in the Super Bowl because the Patriots ran 9,243 times against the Dolphins in the AFC Title Game and the Fins couldn't stop 'em. In 1986, it was Washington gettin' 186 yards on 32 pass attempts -- a huge number of attempts for the time -- that ended Chicago's playoff run in its first game. (Also, in '86, McMahon pulled a Manziel, and pretty much was never good again, which didn't help.)

In other words, I put more stake in NFL offenses being dumb than in the Bears' defense being all that good.

actually now that I think of it the Bears-Dolphins game is a lot like our semifinals loss against Washington but I'd really rather not talk or think about that right now

One of the biggest pieces of news coming out of the first few days of training camp was defensive line coach Kenny Baker saying senior North Carolina defensive tackle transfer Travis Shaw has "no restrictions" on the "knee issue" that coaches were monitoring during spring football.

Fantastic news. First I've seen anything definitive about Shaw's knee issue.

Clark entered fall camp at full steam.

He is also noticeably bigger than he was out of high school, and is now up to 212 pounds after enrolling at Texas around 195 in January of 2024.

A make-you-miss-type of runner, Clark drew comparisons to Bijan Robinson from former Texas running backs coach Tashard Choice, who recruited Clark. And Clark might be the only back on the roster with that playing style.

This puts Clark at the 2nd heaviest RB behind Baxter. I don't agree on him being the only RB able to make people miss. Simon's HUDL tape shows some good shiftiness. He doesn't show the extreme cutting ability that Bijan did (who does?), but he has excellent vision and nimble feet. More of a cut and slash style, he is elusive weaving through traffic.

Have yet to hear anything about the RB's behind Wisner regarding QB protection. With pads coming on next week, maybe we'll start to hear more about it. Some have mentioned wanting to see whether Gibson has overcome his fumbling issues, but he was also a minus protecting the QB last season.

If you want to get super pumped, here are CC's highlights from high school. Junior year. He runs, he blocks, he breaks tackles, he even catches the ball. He's got some Barry Sanders going on. Simon looks even better I hope he gets on the field.

The thing about Sark is, there's always another guy.

He looks way better and quicker than I thought he did. Can also catch the ball real well, that over the shoulder catch 30 yards down the field was impressive on the second highlight.

Chip Shots: Texas WR DeAndre Moore Jr. wants it all - SEC and national titles, records, and Biletnikoff Award

Chip Shots: Texas WR DeAndre Moore Jr. wants it all - SEC and national titles, records and Biletnikoff Award

AUSTIN, Texas — Jordan Whittington said on his way to the NFL DeAndre Moore Jr. would end up becoming the leader of the Texas Longhorns' receiver room.

Check.

Moore, a junior, is the first one to practice. He tries to help the team's young receivers, including freshmen Kaliq Lockett, Daylan McCutcheon, Michael Terry III and Jaime Ffrench. Sometimes, he thinks he tries to help them too much.

"Sometimes, I catch myself talking too much, because I want to give them so much that I know," Moore said.  "I'm just like, 'Here, bro, this is what you need to do. You need to do that.' So, sometimes I kind of just got to take a little chill pill."

Moore, who had 39 catches for 456 yards and seven touchdowns in 2024, certainly isn't shy. When asked if he had any personal goals, Moore said:

"First and foremost, I want to win the natty [national championship]," Moore said. "I think we've gotten to the doorstep two years in a row - two too many for my liking.

"So I want to win a national championship. We came up short at the SEC championship. I want to win the SEC championship. As far as personal, I want the Texas touchdown record [for a single season of 13 set by Jordan Shipley in 2009]. I want at least 1,200 yards [receiving]. And I want to win the Biletnikoff Award [given to college football's top receiver]."

Why do you think you're the best receiver in college football?

"I'm dynamic," Moore said. "You can put me in the slot. You can put me outside. You can put me in the backfield. You can put me at quarterback if you needed me to, and I'm gonna do it."

Where do you rank on the list of the fastest players on the team right now?

"Somewhere up there," Moore said. "I know I'm not first. I think Ryan Niblett is. He's pretty fast, but I give myself somewhere in the top three."

When asked about the difference between the scrambling ability of former quarterback Quinn Ewers and current starter Arch Manning, Moore said:

"One had baby wheels, and one has super wheels," he said.

When asked about how the football arrives when thrown by Ewers as compared to Manning, Moore said:

"Arch's footballs come with a little bit more of a zip. Quinn's were a little bit more of a pillow, a little bit of a cushion. He'll kind of loft it in there. Arch is zipping that thing in there getting it to you."

Moore said Manning has been sharp early in training camp and is carrying himself with a lot of confidence.

"It gives the rest of our team assurance," Moore said of Manning. "He's our leader, and he's going to be the guy to take the helmet and lead us into these games and these battles.

"So, just seeing a guy like that who's not really sweating and is so sure of himself, it only gives me confidence to go out there and do what I need to."

Moore was asked what he likes about Texas' four freshmen receivers - Daylan McCutcheon, Kaliq Lockett, Jaime Ffrench and Michael Terry III?

"Day Day - Daylan McCutcheon - is smart," Moore said. "He's kind of in the slot, so I see a lot of Day Day, and he is really just soaking it up and taking it and running with it.

"Jaime Ffrench has got that Florida swagger. He got that line. He got all that good stuff. So Jaime's definitely coming along. Kaliq [Lockett] - long strider. Long strider. So he's really getting up on your toes really quick. Kaliq's doing a really great job. And Mike Terry, big boy, I didn't know Mike could go like that. So when he coming out here for fall camp, I'm like, 'OK, all right, big boy got some stuff to him. So they're all coming along in their own time."

On what he's seeing from Jaylon Guilbeau in moving from Texas' Star/nickel corner position to outside cornerback, Moore said:

"Intent. I can say Jaylon's intent has changed since - one - his baby being born. But this last year, I think we're all kind of tired around this building of, you know, getting to that, you know, last door, and just barely knocking on it. So everybody kind of has to step up."

"First and foremost, I want to win the natty [national championship]," Moore said.

I like how Chip spelled that one out for the uninitiated lol

so how many more years of non-dominant OL play will it take before we realize flood probably needs to be upgraded.

OL will look different with a more competent QB that steps up in the pocket.

Also this talk of taking more snaps under center is promising for the power run game. The OL and Baxter are going to feast and just when they pull the safeties in it’s going over their heads.

I was reminded by someone yesterday that most of the first week is always “install” for the coming season.

That means getting players - all players, not just the first-line units - to understand key aspects of the offense and defense, and doing the things in live action that the coaches have talked about and shown to the players on the proverbial chalkboard for months.

Install is mostly a learning phase of training camp.

But it’s also an opportunity for coaches to see which players can ingest (or have already ingested) the material and put it into practice. That ingestion allows for some freshmen or younger players to a get a head start.

Graceson Littleton is a perfect example.

The freshman from the Tampa-St. Pete area is stacking together multiple positive practices, enough so for one insider to already say, “he’s definitely going to play this year.”

Now, whether that will be as a starter or a key back-up is yet to be determined. But Littleton’s absorption of the team’s defense, along with his athletic ability, showcases the value of being ready the day practice starts.

Even in a somewhat crowded and definitely talented secondary, Littleton will play in 2025. A lot.

Note to myself and everyone else who attempts to rank recruits:

Never underestimate the mental aspect of sport.

**

Outside of his ability to understand what defensive coaches want him to do, Littleton is said to have elite closing speed. When he sees something, he goes.

**

People ask all the time if there’s an underrated player on the Texas defense. I typically respond with Ethan Burke because Burke is overshadowed by Colin Simmons. Or I mention Brad Spence because Spence was so underrated as a portal pick-up.

But, in retrospect, I wonder if the right answer to that question now isn’t Trey Moore. Moore is lining up all over the field in camp, giving the defense multiple looks and variety.

No offense to Burke, who I think will have a fine senior campaign, or Spence, who could be a real factor as a pass rusher, but based on feedback I’ve received, I think Moore is going to be a more integral piece of the puzzle than folks realize.

**

The team gets going in full pads for the first time this morning.

Practice starts right around 9am.

It’ll be the first time the group tackles to the ground and gets truly “physical”.

Hook’Em!
