I have a question about the depiction of 1991 Austin, Texas.

I moved here a little less than three years after the murders, and I don’t remember that much of a cowboy-like presence in the city. Was Lanier High out in the boonies at that time? Or did the victims and their families live in a place like Manor when it was mostly ranch land? My wife has the same question, and she was born and raised here, McCallum High Class of 1991. (By the way, she went to Lamar Middle School with one of the victims.)

They did show the “weird” Austin of the old school Drag. But for the most part it felt like I was watching a setting more like 1970s Fort Worth.

It's still Texas. Every school had kids who were in FFA. It's highlighted in the doc because those girls were into it. We had plenty of shit kickers at McCallum in the '80s and weren't near any farmland.

This is one of oddest and most outstanding things I've read on Surly in a while.

What did you use as accelerants in your Spud Guns?

In 1989 senior at it ,I  walked around the corner on to 6th towards the east end on the way to Maggie Mae’s, with a girl that was way out of my league. I think there was a country bar down there. Anyway I see 4-5 of my friends squared up with 4-5 cowboys getting ready to fight.( hats , handlebar mustaches , boots- grown ass men much larger than their opponents). As I see my first friend get put in a trash can , said hot chick says “ aren’t those your roommates? “
”where?” I said .

”You better go help them they’re  getting killed”

With in 3 minutes we had bloody noses , black eyes , bruised ribs .

I’m pretty sure we got our asses kicked that night by the “the cowboy like presence in the city”

Pussies.

“Big fat , red man chewing cowboy pussies” I think that’s the phrase that started the fight - started before I got there

Contaminated crime scene, myopic and biased investigation, questionable and extremely flawed prosecutions. It was a perfect storm of fuckups.  Everyone was in CYA mode in the aftermath destroying any hope for a true investigation.

Yeah, Mike Lynch who was a good Judge felt the political pressure. He ruled a statement, given by Scott or one of his codefendent's, while a detective held a gun to the back of his head, was freely and voluntarily given. Lynch is a good person but this was a pathetic act of cowardice and I never respected him after.  Gutless pussy.

If I hadn't seen footage from the night in question of the detectives on the scene you would not be able to convince me that the white dude wasn't pulled off the drag from his regularly scheduled panhandling. No wonder this shit wasn't solved.

There is indeed a fascination with human depravity, and like everything else, filmmakers, studios, and streaming companies cash in on it.  I went through a period in college when I consumed true crime books, and every now and then I watch a true crime documentary if I can tell that it's well produced.

My wife, though, watches that stuff like it's oxygen.  I heard a report on NPR a few years ago that women in particular are drawn to true crime stories, in particular those that involve crimes against women, because they have a strong empathetic connection to them, especially if they have been the victim of some kind of sexual assault or sexual abuse.
