Shot up a bunch of Catholic school kids at their Wednesday mass.  2 dead.  Add the Facebook thoughts and prayers to the thoughts and prayers they were doing as they were shot.

An assailant fired a rifle through the windows of a Catholic church in Minneapolis where students were celebrating their first Mass of the new school year on Wednesday, killing an 8-year-old and a 10-year-old in the pews and injuring 17 others, the police said.

The attacker then died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in the rear of the church, the Minneapolis police chief, Brian O’Hara, said at a news conference. Of the 17 people injured, 14 were children, the chief said. Two were in critical condition, he said.

The shooting, at about 8:30 a.m. Central time, took place at the Annunciation Catholic Church, which has a school for children from prekindergarten through eighth grade. Monday was the first day of school, and the all-school Mass on Wednesday is an annual tradition.

Investigators have identified the attacker as Robin Westman, 23, who is believed to have been a former student at the school, according to a law enforcement official with knowledge of the investigation. The suspect’s mother is a retired school employee, the official said.

Ellie Mertens, 25, a youth minister at the church, said she was sitting with children in the pews when bullets started ripping through the windows. The shooting lasted for about 2 minutes, she said.

“I was just feet away from this window where it was,” Ms. Mertens said in an interview. “The pew saved my life.”

Chief O’Hara said that at least two doors of the church had been barricaded from the outside. The shooter, who was in his early 20s, also fired a shotgun and a pistol, he said.

“Children are dead, there are families that have a deceased child; you cannot put into words the gravity, tragedy or absolute pain of the situation,” Mayor Jacob Frey of Minneapolis said at the news conference.

Mr. Frey, a vocal advocate for stricter gun laws, added: “Don’t just say this is about thoughts and prayers right now. These kids were literally praying.”

Here’s what else to know:

Witness accounts: Inside the Hennepin County Medical Center emergency room, where multiple victims were taken, Za’khia Jones, 29, was with her fiancée when she saw children who appeared to be bloody being rushed in. “One kid came in and they had rushed her into a room and she was just screaming she didn’t want to die,” Ms. Jones said in an interview. Read more ›

Minnesota violence: The attack was the fourth deadly shooting in the city in just over 24 hours. And the Twin Cities area was rattled in June when a gunman assassinated a state lawmaker and her husband and left another lawmaker and his wife hospitalized with gunshot wounds, setting off a two-day manhunt.

Governor responds: Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota expressed support for the school community in a statement. “I’m praying for our kids and teachers whose first week of school was marred by this horrific act of violence,” Mr. Walz said.

Trump: President Trump spoke with Mr. Walz by phone, a White House official said. Mr. Trump wrote on social media that the White House would continue to monitor the situation, and later signed a proclamation ordering that flags nationwide be lowered to half-staff until Sunday in tribute to the victims.

Looks like all of the injured kids are expected to survive.

Listen to this sweet, innocent voice.  Fuck.  To be clear, reporter said that family approached the press and said he wanted to talk to them about his friend Victor.

Really some incredible ground game going on here to set the table to continue to dehumanize trans people, and ignore the holy shit number of things wrong in the shooters head. He was a trans nazi that was pro-russia?

Yeah definitely just because trans, definitely nothing else wrong there.

what a bizarre chart.  here it is broken down by race.  also, let's throw in a random demographic that i want to demonize.   i note that you don't have, say, 'male' as the random demographic.  or 'child of gun owners' or other demographic that you want to <3.

Huh, no data source cited on the graphic. I'm shocked really. I'll just presume the data source is facebook.

It’s also not helpful. All that chart could possibly demonstrate is the relative Bayesian probability that a given individual will commit a mass shooting, based on a single measure. And even the highest probably (0.7 out of 1 million, or 0.00007%) is so fucking low that it’s essentially 0%. It literally gives you no actionable information. At most, it says “The chance that any individual regardless of demographic category will commit a mass shooting is vanishingly small, although it’s slightly less vanishingly small for Category X.”

You may retort that this chart tells us where to focus our efforts to prevent mass shootings. Maybe you think based on this chart that locking up the trans population (or worse) would be an effective strategy to prevent mass shootings.

Well, if that’s what you are thinking, you’re incredibly wrong. Set aside the injustice of punishing over a million innocent people for every one potential criminal. Trans people account for only a tiny amount of all mass shootings (analyses range from 0.1% to 1.3%). So any policy targeting trans people would have almost zero impact on the overall number of deaths due to mass shootings.

I hesitate to ask this on the DT board, but anyone care to guess which demographic group is responsible for more than 95% of mass shootings?

Next you're gonna tell me there's a vanishingly small percentage of trans people in sports too, which wouldn't make any sense given how many laws have been passed on that particular concern

I actually watched his manifesto video. The guy was apparently trans, wanted to kill trump, was obsessed with guns, obsessed with mass shooters, praised far-right politician Brandon Herrera, and had multiple anti-Semitic and racist things written on his weapons and cartridges, including “6 million wasn’t enough”. Definitely an ideological wild card. Above all you could tell he was an edgelord that viewed himself as really cool and funny.

Dude was off his rocker and was concoction of insanity and edgelord shit from the dregs of the internet

Reminds me of the time that bigoted motherfuckers like @Enchubben tried to start pinning child molestation and grooming on trans people. So someone decided to fire up the Youth Ministers (and other pervs) Thread of Shame, and started posting news stories of all these conservative authority figures abusing their positions to sex up little kids. In 25 pages and 1200 posts, there's been, like what, one fucking case.

You know what, Enchubben, why don't you have the balls just to come out and tell Troph and the whole board that she's a danger to society? Just say it, you cowardly motherfucker. Go ahead, aren't you man enough? Just like the goddam Nazis, you pick out a small minority to point out, demonize, and blame society's ills on to justify turning this country into an authoritarian hellscape. Seriously, go fuck your own face before the leopards that you let loose have a chance to, because they will.

That chart is intentionally misleading, because the average MAGA mouthbreather (redundant) won't bother to see that it's citing "rates", and even if they did they wouldn't understand the implications.  I should add this is all assuming the underlying data is in fact correct, which is probably not where anyone should hang their hat.

I genuinely didn't know the gender of the shooter, I was more concerned with the hate and firepower they put on display - but tip of the cap to you for correcting me. First time I've seen you actually try, so well done :)

Or is this just a troll bit?

It's because of SSRIs, which only America has, apparently.

As a disclaimer, I completely agree it's an absurd primary argument and cosign with your extreme sarcasm here...

but....

and I haven't looked at the data....

but....

American population per capita, by ratio, gross total, whatever metric you want to use has the next country beat by 10x at least of people who are medicating with SSRI's and it's probably not good for the ole mental wellness.

The conversation should of course start with the fundamental "why are Americans more mentally ill and have more mental issues than the rest of the world where we need to medicate and treat the symptoms with the best we have" and there are a few threads smattered about on here that get into it, but...yea.

The baseline for our collective level of mental illness is because not only do we not foster community and collective well-being, we demonize them as evil, communist, etc.  Other countries give a shit about collective well being and the community.  America cares about the individual, and only the individual.  We have made a god of the individual, and worship that god at the expense of all others, to our great detriment.

Mental illness will exist in any world.  It will be worst in a world where you are told that you are on your own, that's a good thing, and if you dare suggest otherwise, you're an enemy of our society and everything we're about.
