What this whole episode has taught me is that there are even more idiots in this country than I had thought. It is embarrassing.

Every time I think I have a grip on just how many utter idiots there are, I soon discover that I've understimated that number yet again. And badly. I used to think I've been too hard on Americans re: their ignorance and stupidity. I've finally come to understand I've actually been far too optimistic about it.

A friend of mine brought down the house as a 2L at the UofA law school way back in 1982 in a Con Law class on 1st Amendment cases, e.g., is putting an American flag on the ass of your jeans “protected speech?” Is shouting “Fire!” In a crowded theater protected? The was a Harvard Law grad who behaved as if he were doing us southern rubes a great favor by showing up for class. In a lull between the prof’s pontificating, my friend put up his hand and was invited to speak.  He said “Patrick Henry said, ‘Give me liberty or give me death.’  He didn’t say “FUCK THE QUEEN!”  Two minutes of laughing and applause followed.  Prof even smiled, just a little.

Does the Pope shit in the woods? Is it ok to yell 'Movie!' in a crowded firehouse?

The only way to have empathy for right wingers in this environment is to realize they are being fed nothing but misinformation/disinformation through their social media feeds, algorithms, and conservative news sources. The ability to curate information was a disastrous development.

And we're not able to have fruitful conversations about this with our friends and family to make a difference. But I'm gonna keep trying.

I look forward to reading Democrats excoriating the Dem party for not finding just the right way to message this and turn this whole fascism thing around.

Help us, Charlie Schumer, you're our only hope...because we ain't doin' shit ourselves.

This is correct. The right feels the exact same way fwiw.

To your second point, this is why this is so upsetting to moderate conservatives and moderate liberals. He was doing exactly that, trying to have conversations with young people in environments where challenging people’s views is supposed to be championed; and he was killed for it.

Man, I feel for some of you. I only have to deal with my wife's parents and they barely come around. I couldn't imagine dealing with a whole family of right wingers day after day. Exhausting.

Moderate liberals don’t feel this way and moderate conservatives really just describes people who are still trying to ignore the nastiness of their own politics (for example electing a child rapist president twice).

To be clear, you’re saying the right feels that everyone else is being fed misinformation?  There’s only one side that has been proven to consistently lie to their viewers and consumers of their media.

Feelings have nothing to do with facts.

Holy shit you're out of touch.

He was extremely disingenuous.  He purposely took advantage of the climate of tolerance on university campuses to generate income for himself and his now grifter widow. He lied and distorted facts and espoused ways of living that created danger for everyone.  Eventually his number came up. Now we wait for the brain worms and microbes to come for RFK.

Edit: what challenging of views was Charlie doing when the groyper pulled the trigger?

Poor Gandhi got killed just for trying to make peace in the word. Or, right wing nutjob kills right wing nutjob because of some fight with another right wing nutjob.

I'd like you to view the post of the professor who faced death threats from his followers after Charlie Kirk targeted her with his platform. I've seen a lot of people talk about how great he was because he did these college tours, which yes were good to have, but completely leave out all the other bad shit he said and environment he also helped to foment. The right has got to stop acting like the left are the only ones saying bad shit about people and creating a dangerous environment.

Since we all originally came to this board with a shared love of UT, I kindly ask everyone (no matter your political affiliation) reading this thread to spend 15 minutes watching this video.

Quite the understatement. After this right wing piece of shit was killed by another right wing piece of shit, democrats by and large all put out messages of unity. Republicans, including the fucking president, started talking about war. And the violent left. And a civil war. On and on and on.

Charlie put her on what he LITERALLY CALLED a “hit list.” She faced a cascade of death threats.
That’s not “honest dialogue.” It is the textbook definition of “stochastic terrorism.” So, stop whitewashing this shit.
Nobody should be shot for their statements. Nobody should face death threats for their statements. Nobody should be murdered because someone so demonized them as to make their murder inevitable.
Decent humans believe those things are true.
Conservatives and Charlie Kirk fans only believe those things in one direction. Just stop.

He got push back every time he went out to those and was challenged constantly. Something you do in debates. Something we've gotten away from because no one wants to hear from the other side ever.

Look, I acknowledge many on the left have insulated themselves online as well and certain people provide them misinformation/disinformation. But equating it is huge mistake IMO.

Kirk didn't just "challenge people's views". He promoted misogyny, bigotry, and Christian nationalism. Did he also espouse  some religious views that were palatable? Sure, I'll give that to you. But if someone is saying good things and also terrible things, you can't just ignore the negatives. You have to red flag that stuff, and maybe most on the right never saw it.

We have become a people obsessed with being right, instead of being obsessed with getting it right.  Perception is not reality. Reality is reality. We've lost that.

And just like Donald Trump, none of these aspects of his character are at all hidden or diluted.

Which brings us to the second astute post:

GTFOH with that shit. He had an agenda and that agenda wasn’t debating in earnest. This is some crazy sanewashing of what his “debates” were all about. Just listen to the clip of right before he was murdered where he interjects about gang violence when asked about mass shootings.

CNN online is running with the trans roommate line not the groyper line.

fuck me running.

They won't talk about groypers, the Catholic Radical Right movement, or Kingdom Christianity. You see, their rise is news. News organizations (TV ones for sure) are hostile to news because exploring involves effort and being able to operate outside the template.

I've learned of these movements in The New Yorker and The Atlantic. Radical mags printed in secret basements using mimeograph and only passed around by hand. They're so obscure, I bet CNN hasn't even heard of them.

Lazy, incompetent (largely due to college education), and terrified describes CNN and other prominent national news outlets.

Please let me know when CNN has a panel show exploring "Are Trans-sexuals a violent threat?" Too dumb to face the reality that they're question lends credibility to a notion that basic investigative journalism could have disproved by reviewing crime statistics or other credible sources. But no, it's so much easier to host a panel and allow somebody totally wrong and dishonest equal voice to truth.

Every TV journalist's wet dream is to host their own news show.

really? that's your dissection of all the information presented to date? then why was a targeted attack against one person? the vast majority of gaming-influenced murders are of the mass type or personal revenge. this person targeted a political figurehead that was saying nasty shit about a lot of people. regardless of affiliation, this person killed CK specifically and it appears politically motivated. I think this has little to do with gaming and more about being perpetually online and forming an online persona that is stronger than his IRL-life.

btw, watched a video from a ballistics expert and it's clear the bullet ricocheted off his body armor and into his head through the neck. I can link it for anyone interested

Not yet but I'm going to research it.  The question is what to do with investment accounts.  Just moving money isn't all that difficult but the investment aspect seems much more complex to me.

Damn, Spain looks better every day.

Fake news is poor way to say it, but your overall point might be correct.

But let's remember, in the aftermath of his killing, the rhetoric on the right immediately went to trans shooter. Immediately. Trans people were doxxed online that afternoon as possible suspects. They have been trying to pigeonhole everything into the transgender accusation.

The groyper theory only came about after some information was provided that could corroborate it. That people in that gamer space is where lots of groypers live. That he wore a Pepe meme Halloween costume. That Nick Fuentes, the leader of the groyper "movement", had a very specific beef with Charlie Kirk.

You're right that "both sides" could be wrong. But one side went about it disingenuously.

Here is Nick Fuentes, the leader os the Groypers, a guy who is as right wing as right wing can be, laying out what Charlie Kirk was really doing with his college visits. Everyone here should have a listen to a guy from THEIR SIDE pulling the curtain back on Kirk. Start at the 4:40 mark.

Also here is Nick Fuentes saying Charlie Kirk has become a huge White Supremacist but he remains a Jew lover.

more

and lastly here is Nick Fuentes calling to arms his Groyers against Kirk. Coded language of course.

So if one of the most right wing personalities out there can see through Kirk's schtick........why can't you?
