This summer the Florida system in general got a court decision allowing schools to reach beyond that fee and redirect other student-derived fees to athletics. Texas as a state is not better, this is just an indicator of where the whole thing has gone off the rails for most schools.

Yeah...that's nuts.

Yep. And in Florida, student fees go to athletics. It’s insane and higher ed/college sports needs to get a hard reset.

Student fees don’t have to go to athletics. That’s a university’s call, and if student’s complain enough they can get an opt out.

It’s Florida and they are gutting higher ed, so I see why that is happening there.

Does Texas not have an athletic fee?

AFAIK, the fee is still fairly minimal (a couple bucks per credit hour) and covers free admission to everything but football, offers discounted football tickets, and pays for stuff like intramural sports and gyms.

Texas athletics pays for itself and usually makes money.

I am trying to recall if there has ever been a time where we have seen teams just completely unravel after a few losses?

There have always been a team or two that was over rated, but I am not sure about the number of teams that have gone to utter dogshit so quickly.

No firing. No $ to payoff. Hope and PRAY he gets an offer at one of the openings.

I don't think FSU has the money for Norvell this season.

Or they are wildly trying to scrape it together.

You can't tell me some / all these ADs aren't getting kickbacks on the buyout money.  When is the last time a buyout helped a school?  Yet every contract does the same stupid ass shit.  I get it, the top coaches won't sign with you without the buyout.  Tell 'em to get fucked and go find an up-and-comer.  I guarantee there are plenty of unknown coaches out there that can do just as good as some of these mopes that have $20MM+ buyouts and would do it for less than half the price.

I mean from the outside it seems like Sexton runs the show on both sides.

It looks like with Texas, students have the Big Ticket that they pay for to get into athletic events, vs. Florida where everything is covered by the activity fee except football.

Thankfully, either/or is a minimal expense for students. I hope they continue to encourage a big student section.

So, we’re almost at 2 Norvell’s on the carousel. Sign of the apocalypse, I’d say.

I wonder if Mike Norvell would be interested in the Colorado State job?

Mike Norvell's FSU Contract Buyout Info After Loss to Stanford amid ACC Losing Streak

Joseph Zucker  Oct 19, 2025

Florida State would have to write Mike Norvell a massive check in order to fire him, even after he restructured his contract in the offseason.

Norvell's future with the Seminoles will become a bigger point of discussion after FSU fell 20-13 to Stanford, extending its losing streak to four games.

Alas, the coach might be untouchable for now if only because of what the Tallahassee Democrat's Dan Rorabaugh reported is a buyout of around $59.2 million.

Florida State decision makers are still reportedly considering it, however, with "momentum" building toward a change, per Pete Nakos of On3.

As long has Florida State fires him without cause, Norvell is entitled to receive 85 percent of the outstanding balance on his contract. Since his deal runs through 2031, dismissing him at any point over the next few years will be expensive.

Here's his annual salary moving forward, per Rorabaugh:

  • 2026: $10.3 million
  • 2027: $10.45 million
  • 2028: $10.6 million
  • 2029: $10.75 million
  • 2030: $10.9 million
  • 2031: $11.05 million

Norvell is another example of the risks schools are increasingly taking with the extensions they're handing out.

Ahead of the 2023 season, Florida State re-signed him through 2029 and bumped his annual salary up to $8.05 million. The Seminoles' unbeaten record during the regular season that year resulted in another pay raise.

FSU proceeded to fall off a cliff in 2024 and finished at 2-10. Even assuming that was a nadir under the current regime, missing a bowl game for the second successive year would be a disaster.

Florida State is also trending toward a fourth losing record in his six seasons at the helm. It's starting to feel like 13-1 was more of an exception than 2-10.

Of course, the dilemma for FSU is twofold.

Norvell would be cashing in on the second-biggest buyout in college football history, eclipsing the $49 million Penn State just paid to James Franklin but falling well short of the $76 million Texas A&M paid for Jimbo Fisher to go away.

All total, the Seminoles would need to find $100 million, maybe even $150 million to compensate Norvell and his staff and then hire a new head coach.

There's also the fact that the coaching market is in a rough place right now.

Look no further than Penn State. Jettisoning Franklin was an understandable call, but the list of candidates to potentially replace him isn't exactly inspiring. Curt Cignetti, one of the best theoretical options, took himself out of the running by signing a new deal with Indiana.

It would be the same thing with Florida State. As bad as things are with Norvell, there's always the risk that things continue to spiral with a new head coach, which would mean another big buyout and more angst.

Giving it another year and trying to salvage things with Norvell might be the most likely outcome for the Seminoles.

OK. He can’t call intelligent plays. Or manage the clock.  Or know how to use timeouts. Or what to call in the red zone.  Or what plays to call to run out the clock.  But garsh darn it, he’s such a nice guy….

A lot of fan bases are going to be really disappointed and some mid coaches are going to get some crazy paydays. Wait till Auburn enters the chat.

There are dozens of qualified coordinators and assisstants at any given time. More than usual are going to get HC jobs this cycle and many fanbases will be disappointed that they didn't get a "big name" like a sitting HC from another program, but I don't think the success rate of the group of hires this season will be any less than any other cycle on average. Some will succeed, some will fail.

UF should give the UNLV Coach a look.

All kidding aside, and there is zero chance we would, but I wouldn't be oppossed to giving Mora another look.  He's turning around a tragically bad UConn team.  We had our 3 best seasons under him this century.  Won't happen, but...

I’m beginning to think that contracts need to require HCs retain an HC and DC who call plays from the box. It seems that it’s nearly always lackluster when the HC wants to retain that.

HCs need to do game management and strategy, the plays need to be called from upstairs. And an unwillingness to allow that flags that someone may not be HC ready.

I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I would like us to hire Vanderbilt’s coach

I don't think Lea's schtick would work at a place like Florida. He runs an odd offense that masks talent deficits. He is also almost completely reliant on one player, and he is almost 100% portal reliant.

I am very interested to see if FSU goes after Deion if they do have the means to fire Norvell.

Considering James Franklin has the PSU money, he could probably sign for about half what he would get normally with FSU (just enough to be able to argue it's market rate and not affect Franklin's PSU payout) and functionally cut Norvell's buyout in half for FSU. That move would make a lot of sense for both FSU and Franklin.

FSU is more of a poverty program than people realize. They were nothing before Bobby Bowden and I think they continue to slide.

Current recruits weren't even born when he was coach and have little memory of when they were good other than Norvell's miracle year when they were snubbed.

FSU has to wait for Florida and Penn State to fill their jobs before they would get to pick, so they might as well just wait until those are filled and ride it out with Norvell. That buyout is also a consideration.

Florida and Penn State also have pretty stacked rosters so whomever is going there should have an easier time at first (assuming they can keep the teams together).

He's a Vandy alum and Nashville native so that would be tougher than you'd think. But also, he was doing very poorly before Pavia and the New Mexico assistants arrived so idk if I'd trust him tbh.

That's my only explanation for how lopsided coaching contracts have become. Sexton basically has a monopoly on coach representation so he has all the leverage. The buyouts are wild on their own, but what's dumber is that the coaches can leave for pennies. That gives them all the leverage to renegotiate their deal whenever they have a good year

While I agree with you generally, you kinda skipped the Jimbo/Jameis Winston years and a national championship win in there.
