Not a lot of reporting on this story outside of local news and Fox News, weird. This had some good reporting

https://abc57.com/news/two-national-guardsmen-shot-in-washington-dc-according-to-dhs-chief

Unfortunate that people are starting to take the bait and retaliate against NG service members deployed to menace local populations

Edit: and we should probably update the thread title to be more accurate

Why are you speculating that this is retaliation against the NG. Early returns see that the gunman was an Afghanistani who wasn’t even living in DC to be “menaced.”

Multiple law enforcement officials briefed on the matter later told CNN the FBI believes they’ve identified the suspect. The officials said the shooter’s initial identification matches a man from Washington state who appears to have immigrated here from Afghanistan in 2021. The suspect applied for asylum in 2024, and it was granted earlier this year.

From NBC:

What we know so far:

  • Two National Guard members were shot this afternoon in what appeared to be a "targeted" attack near the White House and are in critical condition, Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser said. The gunman was also shot and is in custody, authorities said.
  • Rahmanullah Lakanwal has been identified as the suspect, four senior law enforcement sources briefed on the investigation said.
  • The FBI will initially investigate the shooting as a possible act of terrorism, two senior U.S. law enforcement officials said.
  • West Virginia Gov. Patrick Morrisey initially said that the guard members were from his state and had died, but he later walked that back, saying his office had received “conflicting reports” about their status.
  • Around 2,100 National Guard troops were in D.C. as of this morning, according to Joint Task Force — District of Columbia.

Dude worked with the CIA.  Afghan who was part spook.  Trump stupidly yanked all the troops out and handed the country over to the Taliban so this guy needs to get out of Dodge.  Applies for asylum.  Gets it in April of this year under Trump's regime.  Travels 3K miles from Washington state to D.C. to kill two Nat'l Guardsmen right after a judge rules that it's illegal to have them deployed there.  Hmmmmmm.  What a kawinkidink.

Listen, obviously it's the crazy dude with a gun's fault for people getting shot, but maybe, just maybe, sending a military presence to an American city armed to the gills is a great way to raise the temperature and escalate violence.

Spoke with a fairly broad cross-section of people outside my social bubble yesterday and today. Business is bad, and for many the worst it has ever been. We're talkin' no bonuses. We're talkin' laying off great employees. Kids of middle school, high school, and college age are beyond nihilist and zombie-like. Between tariffs and AI, there is no vision for any future in which they're going to feel like productive members of society.

Epstein wasn't a big topic, but it was bigger than Charlie Kirk and "political violence." The DC national guard story, even as it was developing yesterday, failed to evoke strong emotions. In fact, there is more outrage about the government's response (collective punishment) than there is over the incident itself.

Huh… D.C. has extremely strict gun control laws

That "armed to the gills" is in reference to the National Guard.

Senator Barrasso: "…what percentage of the Afghan population that left Afghanistan as part of our U.S. evacuation efforts, what percentage of those were vetted before they actually got on the airplanes?"

Secretary Blinken: "Before they got on the airplanes to leave Kabul? Certainly not most of them were not."

But yet he was. So what’s your point?

Wait, so you’re saying before granting this shooter asylum six months ago, the Trump Administration didn’t vet him?

He's pretty shitty for ducking and weaving on the asylum thing when he could have just addressed the fact that it's a mental health issue.

Right. But then the regime misses an opportunity to continue to demonize Brown foreigners, in general, and Muslims, in particular. Acknowledging a potential mental health problem like PTSD would be like recognizing the killer's humanity, and we couldn't have that. They must forever remain the proverbial "Other" so that American hatred and blame for our problems are targeted at Brown foreigners instead of at the asshole billionaires picking our pockets.
