  • Well, that isn't really true. A lot of our guided systems use GPS coordinates get to an area, but identify a target with other sensors, including matching to an image (often IR) of the target. GPS guided munitions without alternate navigation and targeting systems are fairly easy to knock off course. Covering a plane in tires may look silly, but I could see it confusing some sensor systems, at least until they are adapted to counter the counter-measure.

Thank you, and sorry, I initially responded to the wrong comment.

I kind'a knew that. No Ding & Clark to laze the targets.

I was just channeling my inner Billy Jack, when you know its coming, "You want to know something? There's not a damn thing you're going to be able to do about it."

Ukrainian Ministry of Defense (MoD) news agency ArmyInform reported on June 5 that an unnamed NATO official stated that Russian forces are sustaining an average casualty rate of 1,140 personnel per day, of whom nearly 975 are killed in action (KIA) – a much higher number of killed than the standard one-to-three KIA-to-wounded-in-action (WIA) ratio. 2/7

Seems high, but it would be high because Russia doesn’t have the infrastructure to quickly evacuate their wounded.  The stuff we pioneered in Korea and Vietnam with helicopter evacuation and surgical hospitals has been completely lost to them.  They’ve probably got guys who spend hours before seeing even modest levels of medical care.

I don’t think they want wounded vets.

I haven't heard one peep about Russian field hospitals, or evacuating the injured one single time during this whole conflict. If you are a wounded Russian, I think you get a "tough shitski" and a bullet between the eyes.

Is this the first instance of an American-made fighter downing a Russian fighter?

Do you mean, like in just this war?

Those planes that are just black splotches in the ground, can they be fixed or nah?

Just a little Bondo and they’re good to go.

A Russian manned-fighter hasn’t been downed by an American-made fighter since probably Vietnam.

In 1970, Israeli Mirage IIIs and F-4s engaged a group of Soviet manned MiG-21s that were stationed in Egypt, resulting in a number of downed Soviet aircraft.  I don't know if any of the MiGs were downed by the F-4s though.

Were they manned by Soviets?

Yeah, and we shot down Soviet pilots over Vietnam.  Those are probably the last time.

Nicaragua.

And the IAF kicked some ass over Bekka Valley.

There are rumors Russians were flying for the Serbs during the Kosovo incident. We dropped anything that came off the ground from the Adriatic.
