Interestingly enough…I’m on a family vacation, and one of our cousins has been with a defense contractor for decades (think satellite targeting and such). He was relating the story of a colleague who was an AF forward observer (captain) during the Iraq war. He’d been calling in air strikes and artillery strikes for weeks. Then, an officer came to him and told him about this new thing they had, HIMARS. Within a strike or two, this guy realized he could put ordinance on target with less than 10 meters of error. He went nuts, putting strikes on all kinds of targets that required precision.
After a couple of weeks, he gets a phone call. From the pentagon. It’s a general…he freaks a bit, because general. The general just wants to ask him about his experience and opinion of HIMARS. He gushes, explains all the great things he can do with it, what a game changer it is. General thanks him for his feedback, laughs, and says “but we’re gonna need you to tone it down a bit. Those things are $1 million each, so you burned through $70 million just last week. So…be a bit more selective.”
Point being, the precision on target was a game changer, and puts traditional artillery to shame. And we’ve been playing with them for 20 years. They know how to use them.

This warms the cockles of my heart.

Costs must have plummeted since then as they are currently costing a lot less.

According to CNN, the plant will be located in the west of the country. Its estimated cost is $218 million. Its production capacity will be about 400 tanks per year.

From 2017-2021 (prior to the main invasion), the five largest arms exporters were the United States, Russia, France, China and Germany.

Here in 2023, Russia, the world's former second-largest arms exporter, can barely make 20-24 tanks a month.

Germany is like "hey, we'll throw a single factory together in Ukraine that will make 30+ tanks a month".

Quote
  1. On 10 July, 2023, President Recep Tayyip Erdoǧan of Türkiye, Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson of Sweden, and NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg met at the NATO Summit in Vilnius.

  2. Since the last NATO Summit, Sweden and Türkiye have worked closely together to address Türkiye’s legitimate security concerns. As part of that process, Sweden has amended its constitution, changed its laws, significantly expanded its counter- terrorism cooperation against the PKK, and resumed arms exports to Türkiye, all steps set out in the Trilateral Memorandum agreed in 2022.

  3. Sweden and Türkiye agree today to continue their cooperation under both the Trilateral Permanent Joint Mechanism established at the Madrid NATO Summit 2022, and under a new bilateral Security Compact that will meet annually at ministerial level and create working groups as appropriate. At the first meeting of this Security Compact, Sweden will present a roadmap as the basis of its continued fight against terrorism in all its forms and manifestations towards the full implementation of all elements of the Trilateral Memorandum, including article 4. Sweden reiterates that it will not provide support to YPG/PYD, and the organisation described as FETÖ in Türkiye.

  4. Both Sweden and Türkiye agreed that counter-terrorism cooperation is a long-term effort, which will continue beyond Sweden’s accession to NATO. Secretary General Stoltenberg also reconfirmed that NATO categorically condemns terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. NATO will be significantly stepping up its work in this area, including by the Secretary General establishing, for the first time at NATO, the post of Special Coordinator for Counter-Terrorism.

  5. We commit to the principle that there should be no restrictions, barriers or sanctions to defence trade and investment among Allies. We will work towards eliminating such obstacles.

  6. Sweden and Türkiye have also agreed to step up economic cooperation, through the Türkiye-Sweden Joint Economic and Trade Committee (JETCO). Both Türkiye and Sweden will look to maximise opportunities to increase bilateral trade and investments. Sweden will actively support efforts to reinvigorate Türkiye’s EU accession process, including modernisation of the EU-Türkiye Customs Union and visa liberalisation.

  7. On this basis, and given the imperatives of the deterrence and defence of the Euro- Atlantic area, Türkiye will transmit the Accession Protocol for Sweden to the Grand National Assembly, and work closely with the Assembly to ensure ratification.

Massive spike was one guy? Get him on the horn.

Ok. I see you're doing well. Let's not run through the whole budget in a quarter.

So what happens when Russia decides to hit these while under construction with missiles or drones? Hard to keep these locations secret for so long.

Great question. I don't know the answer. Seems odd to me too unless it comes with some serious extra anti-air.

That was my assumption.  I'd expect it to be protected by the very best that NATO countries have to offer.

That German is wrong. He should hate the Russians. He should wish they the atrocities they commit are visited back on them a thousandfold. And keep coming. Until they submit, and renounce their position.
It’s what was done to the fucking Nazis and the German public who made their reign of terror possible. And they deserved it, right up until they surrendered, submitted, and accepted responsibility.
Russia, and every human being in it (remember, they overwhelmingly celebrate and support this war, and cheer for Ukrainian pain and suffering), deserves the same until they accept responsibility. And no mercy until then.
This is how you deal with evil: with merciless fire until even the ashes are burned again.

Well, the Russians haven't managed to hit train lines in Western Ukraine in all this time and disrupt them really, so there is that.

Turkey Agrees to Support Sweden’s NATO Bid, Clearing Main Obstacle

Turkey agreed on Monday to clear the way for Sweden to join NATO, a sudden reversal just hours after President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that the European Union should first advance his country’s bid to join the E.U. bloc.

NATO’s secretary general, Jens Stoltenberg, announced Turkey’s decision from Vilnius, Lithuania, where the alliance was preparing to open its annual summit on Tuesday.

Mr. Stoltenberg said that Mr. Erdogan had lifted his objections to Sweden’s entry into the alliance and would take the country’s bid to his Parliament for ratification as soon as possible.

In return, Sweden and Turkey would continue to work bilaterally against terrorism, Sweden would help reinvigorate Turkey’s application to enter the European Union, and NATO would establish a new “special coordinator for counterterrorism,” he said.

The two countries agreed that “counterterrorism cooperation is a long-term effort, which will continue beyond Sweden’s accession to NATO,” a statement by the alliance said.

“This is good for all of us,” Mr. Stoltenberg said. “This is good for Sweden — Sweden will become a full member — and it’s good for Turkey because Turkey is a NATO ally that will benefit from a stronger NATO.”

The statement said Mr. Erdogan met on Monday with Mr. Stoltenberg and Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson of Sweden to discuss the country’s bid, which had been held up by Turkey’s demands that Sweden crack down on dissidents whom Turkey considers terrorists, including pro-Kurdish activists and members of a religious group that Turkey has accused of planning a coup attempt in 2016.

“This has been a good day for Sweden,” Mr. Kristersson told reporters, saying that the joint statement represented “a very big step” toward the final ratification of Sweden’s membership of NATO.

Hungary is the only other NATO member that has yet to approve Sweden’s bid, but Hungarian officials have said that if Turkey’s position changes, they would not obstruct the process.

President Biden, who arrived in Vilnius on Monday, said in a statement that he welcomed Mr. Erdogan’s commitment to submitting Sweden’s bid for “swift ratification” by the Turkish Parliament.

“I stand ready to work with President Erdogan and Turkey on enhancing defense and deterrence in the Euro-Atlantic area,” Mr. Biden said. He also thanked Mr. Stoltenberg for his “steadfast leadership” and added that he looked forward to welcoming Mr. Kristersson and Sweden as the alliance’s 32nd member.

Yes they have, but rebuilt quickly with help from Romania and Poland.

And that is different than a big fucking factory making equipment to stop the invasion.

Can the US or Canada give Australia 15-20 acres of land on the Atlantic coast, so they can join NATO?  They went into Afghanistan with us, they are our closest Allie’s in the Pacific….

Fuck yeah. Yeah, they are damn good allies.

And Iraq, and in certain places in Africa. Plus they keep the natives in the South Pacific chill, thus protecting critical locations like Bali and Giligan's Island.
