I love Conan. He's retooled his TBS show to 30 minutes. TBS promoted more Conan Without Borders with this new format. They need to hurry up and get to that because he's really good at it and the current studio version isn't working well, imho.

I think Colbert has the best 10:30 show. The comedy is great, but his intellect is what really shines. He can interview with the best of them.

Seth Meyers is my nightly go to. A Closer Look is the best daily news commentary/satire since Jon Stewart.  I'm also a big fan of Amber Ruffin and Amber Says What.

I don't hate Jimmy Kimmel. I usually like what I see when I watch, but Colbert usually wins out.

James Corden is talented, but not my cup of tea.

Can't fucking stand Jimmy Fallon.

I’ve all but stopped watching late night but I do catch one time to time or, more times than not, I’ll stream some of the day-after clips.

My brief rundown:

Jimmy Fallon seems like someone my middle or high school self would enjoy.  He’s so distractingly childish and his interviews really suffer due to his behavior.

I’ve never watched him before but CBS This Morning will play clips from Trevor Noah’s show (I guess because they’re both owned by Viacom) and I swear the majority of the time I can’t tell if he’s setting up the joke or it’s the actual punchline.  I’ve seen hundreds of his clips and I can’t remember ever laughing even once.

Colbert is talented but I miss the old Stephen.  His new show just doesn’t work for me personally

Conan IMHO has been the best thing going for almost two decades.  He’s fantastic.

We tape (DVR) Coco and watch when we can.  His bits out away from the studio have always been the funniest.  His Conan Without Borders are beyond anything he's ever done.  Hilarious, but with some serious moments when justified (Armenia genocide, Korea DMZ, Mexico wall, Haiti poverty).

I tape (Betamax) Conan and Seth Meyers.  I didn’t really like Meyers on SNL but his political commentary seems better than anyone else.  Best since Stewart is right.  Obviously sub-Stewart still but we will take what we can get.  Trevor Noah is the biggest letdown since the Segway.  I feel like CBS and NBC both got it right when they got Colbert and Fallon.  They seem like they should be the heirs to Letterman and Leno respectively, in that they are both neutered versions of their predecessors.  Colbert has that secretly intelligent thing Letterman had and Fallon seems perfect for 45 year old suburban wives like Leno.

There’s a YouTube channel called Don Giller where he recorded every Letterman and he uploads relevant clips when someone is in the news or has died. I enjoy that.

I used to like Conan but for some reason don’t enjoy the new ones.

All the ones today are ass my dude. Except Conan.

Allen, Paar, Carson, Cavett, Snyder, Letterman (early years) were the tits.

Allen Paar Carson were the classic.

Cavett was the intellectual.

Snyder was whack.

Letterman was goofy.

Good shit.

Haven’t watched late night in 20+ years but I watch clips online. Don’t get the love for Colbert. His interviews are awkward and he always seems disengaged. (I don’t find him funny either) Fallon flat out sucks with his fake laughing. I don’t take Myers seriously enough to have an opinion. Kimmel has some decent bits and seems the most natural in interviews. Conan is the king. Most enjoyable bits and guest interactions.

Colbert thinks he's a real fucking news anchor. He hates half his guests. The last time Burr was on his show it was like watching a hostage situation. Either Colbert didn't know of Burr before that day, or he didn't want him on.

I really enjoyed Craig Ferguson, wish he'd gotten more traction.

This. Just let him drink scotch on air and say whatever the hell he wants. It’s midnight on Tuesday.

When Conan left for TBS and Letterman retired, late night died.

Ferguson was the only one that could have naturally entertaining interviews that weren't just rehearsed scripts to plug a movie or whatever.

But he went out on his own terms. I believe he had a young kid and wanted more time with family. CBS wanted him back.

man he was great as the host and such a great conversational interviewer.  Remember him him being like so you like Bush (president comments by her) he’s like do you trim your bush?  Whole segment was hilarious but I forget who it was.

Didn't watch James Corden much. He wasn't my cup of tea, so to speak. But I did tune into his final show and it didn't suck. Really enjoyed the dream sequence and the cameo by Letterman. Good stuff.

I was looking for this last night, I enjoyed the last episode as well. Didn't always watch but when I did it wasn't bad at all

Say what you will about TC's beliefs (at least it's an ethos), but you gotta give props to a guy that can take himself so seriously while also not taking himself seriously at all. Jump to 7:40 to skip the set-up.

So, no one has thoughts on the cancellation of Colbert? The next 9 months should be pretty epic.

If a show gets cancelled and no one is watching does it make a noise or does anyone give a shit?

I know it's not new, but watched the history of late night series on HBO this weekend. Probably an episode or 2 too long, but still found it interesting how these shows evolved from the 50s.  I loved watching Letterman and Conan in my younger years, but these shows have evolved to the point you can take them in youtube clips to see the good stuff.

I've re-discovered Conan recently on sirius with his channel. It plays his Conan needs a friend podcast and random clips from his shows over the years. He is very off-the-cuff funny and seems to have a natural ability to interview.

I didn’t know his ratings were as good as they are. He’s beating The Tonight Show, and so is Kimmel.

He was the highest ratings getter, but those numbers are down from an average of 5+million viewers for the Leno/Letterman years to 1million viewers.

cost $100 million to produce, Steve takes $20 million a year and the show loses $40 million a year.

streaming killed the audience and sponsors

Which as ChickenSandwich points out, says more about the state of television and that time slot that the individual show.

All three are now merely place holders and I am curious if local stations could opt out of network agreements if they would make more money running localized programming than those three shows.

Seems like networks have come full circle. Originally those timeslots were the old test screens. NBC decided to fill the slot with the tonight show bringing in multiple advertisers rather than just one sponsor. The model took off and spread. Now that we can get highlights anytime we want online, no need to watch the full show.

Definitely speaks to the state of tv. It was mentioned on the doc I watched. Carson highlights were talked about that water cooler the next day and if you missed it, too bad.

I will sometimes turn on the night before’s Seth Meyers or The Daily Show while I’m eating dinner. But yeah I can’t even remember the last time I watched a talk show live.

No, it doesn't. This has happened before and it was CBS.

Ah yes,  the belief that it was all about censorship.

Colbert wishes he was the Smother's Brothers and if I remember correctly there was no delay on ending the show.

Why not simply pull the plug on live shows and fill the time with reruns if CBS is so afraid of what he might say and the repercussions?

Seriously, if you are getting less than 2M per show as reported how much more are you going to lose by switching to the best of for the remainder of the tenure.

People keep saying this. Why? Dude's much more corporate and milquetoast than the Colbert Report made him seem. He's not John Oliver, who seems to take pride in daring people to sue him. He'll take his shots, maybe even drop the occasional bleeped out word--as he has been for 10 years to an agreeable audience--but he's not going to do anything to jeopardize the remaining paychecks for his staff. Not that I blame him, but it will continue to largely be the same song and dance in an antiquated format that it always has been.

The timing is certainly suspect--and probably not coincidental--but expensive late shows coming to an end is an inevitability.

As I asked, if CBS is really that worried about him and what he might say than why not just pull the plug now on the whole damn thing.

As opposed to his playing nice with Trump for the last several years?

What is next, the hosts of the View tell us they are not holding back anymore on what they think about Trump?

Colbert is more predictable and about as interesting as the Golden Bachelor without Frank Reynolds.
