How Fox News works

I’m gonna be honest...if a movement made up mostly of skinny white dudes in hoodies can successfully “attack and dethrone God”....then he wasn’t really much of a god, was he?

“You see that guy over there in the robes, who reigned for all eternity....until he was confronted by a few hundred little white dudes with rocks, and driven from heaven in humiliating defeat? Yeah. I worship him.”

Fox got the graphic wrong anyway. Jesus was OG Soy and would have stood among and with the skinny Davids. He would use his words (instead of rocks) to attack and dethrone the idle god that is currently being worshiped as well as calling out the den of thieves in the Cabinet.

jraphics.

Download a small image file rapidly, like, in a jiff.

I've been pronouncing it correctly for nearly 30 years. I've met the guys who developed the format. You'll never not sound foolish for trying to defend why you pronounce it incorrectly. "Jraphics?" Is that what constitutes a compelling argument in your mind? Please.

I understand why you got it wrong. I also understand the psychology of rigid adherence to being wrong. This is the Fox News thread, after all, and that trait is sort of a hallmark of their audience. It's not one to be emulated.

if it was doing things in a jiff it'd be .jif.  it's not.  it's .gif.  because it's graphics interface format.

"jigga"watts is also a correct pronunciation but i bet you think it's funny that doc says it that way.

in truth, because english is a descriptivist language rather than prescriptivist (the peasants made it their own while all the nobility were talking in french), there is no wrong way to pronounce it, only more and less common ways.

Are you unfamiliar with the word jiffy? It means a short amount of time. Jiff is short for that. It's a word, not a file extension. Maybe you can point me to the rule that says the letters in an acronym must be pronounced the same as in the word they represent.

Dude, I'm bulletproof on this. We could go back and forth all night and I'd always have the virtue of being right. So there's no point. I just hope you never find yourself in a position to embarrass yourself saying it wrong in front of people who know how to pronounce it and whose opinions matter to you.

There are legions of people who pronounce gif correctly. If you want to sound like a moron and pronounce it incorrectly because you learned it wrong and would rather stay wrong than correct yourself, that's on you.

So you say you mock people who pronounce gif correctly, and then are critical of people who pronounce ask incorrectly? I sense a little hypocrisy there. I've never heard anyone defend the aks pronunciation as some sort of cultural heritage. I've heard some athletes use that pronunciation and if they're going to go anywhere in broadcasting, they're going to need to correct it. (Same goes for southern accents.)

Mock away. You probably also shoot videos in portrait mode.

I did not know that. I literally have never once heard anyone pronounce it “jiff”. I also said the people who pronounce “ask” as “aks” are technically pronouncing it correctly. It just bothers me because the entire world has settled on the “ask” pronunciation. Whatever it doesn’t matter. I should take my English debate to the nerd board.

I pronounced it "Jif" (as the creators used the PB reference) but my teens told me no one pronounces it that way. I'm not tech savvy so I deferred to them and began using the hard 'G', but I did like the OED's explanation:

Quote

“However, the pronunciation with a hard g is now very widespread and readily understood. A coiner effectively loses control of a word once it’s out there…”

Really makes no jifference difference to me, language is a fun topic.

my post demonstrated that i know the word jiff.  did you somehow read my post and think i don't know what jiff is? and you're claiming to be the educated one here?

You said, "if it was doing things in a jiff it'd be .jif." That doesn't even make sense. You're aware that the gif was developed as a small, 256 color image file that could be downloaded quickly over dial-up, right? The animated gif came along much later. With high speed internet, it's the only kind of gif some people have ever known. I don't know if you're one of those people but there a lot of them out there so the concept of a lengthy download time for a large image file might be lost on them. The fact remains, the correct pronunciation sounds like jiff.

again, if they wanted that to be the case they'd have just named it .jif.  just like the peanut butter, which was ready in a jiff because it didn't have to be stirred (crisco in your peanut butter - another product of ohio).

I've never met anyone in software development who says it incorrectly. No one in my real world circle of friends says it incorrectly. A few, I'm sure, are ignorant of the fact that it even exists. But everyone I know who works in any kind of tech job says it correctly. Former Buckeye LB Josh Perry, who graduated in 2015, appears on the local ESPN Radio affiliate from time to time and he says it correctly.

President Biden’s first order of business need to be to shut down Fox News, arrest its principals, and demand extradition of Rupert Murdoch from Australia on criminal charges.

And yes I’m serious. This has nothing to do with the first amendment. Fox News crossed that bridge a long time ago.

So gif stands for graphics interchange format but it’s pronounced ‘jif’?

What kind of commie bullshit is that?

How do you say SCUBA? Radar? Laser? NASA? Those are all acronyms (although clearly radar and laser have become pretty dissociated from their origins). I am team "jif" and don't really give much of a shit how anyone pronounces it. That said, arguments centered around the fact that the "g" in graphic should guide pronunciation makes no sense, given that is not how acronyms work.

Although the gif/jif talk is extremely compelling in a nerdy-I-like-etymology-way, I am more extremely concerned about the recent development with foreign ownership of broadcast media in the US being allowed at greater than 25%. (See: Cumulus petition FCC). I see that as a toehold for other entities and not a positive. Maybe I'm ignorant about how it all works, but information and its veracity and sources are of vital importance in a democracy. Just ask the National Archives what happens when the wrong people with the wrong ideas about how information should be preserved get in office.

Seriously, WTF is this? It doesn't explain anything. What is the name of the anti-government group? What do they espouse to? Why are they antigovernment? They identified as both communist and socialist and antifascist? Okay but explain how you know that. Did they tell the cops, is it in the arrest report?  Shitty reporting.

Surprised this hasn't been posted here yet

https://www.sfgate.com/entertainment/article/Fox-News-Black-deaths-stock-market-graphic-was-15322214.php

Fox News apologized Saturday for how it displayed a chart correlating the stock market's performance with the aftermath of the deaths of George Floyd, Martin Luther King Jr. and Michael Brown.

The graphic that aired Friday to illustrate market reactions to historic periods of civil unrest "should have never aired on television without full context. We apologize for the insensitivity of the image and take this issue seriously,” the cable channel said in a statement.

Wow. I sat through that whole video. On Torabi's twitter he had another one with Ingraham and it's just awful. I'm not a reincarnation kind of person, but some of these folks are channeling Joseph McCarthy and Father Coughlin and all the other people held up as examples of HOW NOT TO BEHAVE.

No one should ever let them, ever, be rewritten as moral good people.
