Getting old sucks

Physical ailments aside, I think one of the crappy things about getting older is that there is always something to do.  There's never a point in which everything is just done.   And that's coming from someone (teacher) that has a hell of a lot more spare time than most of y'all.

A few years back I surmised the trick to a happy life is simply tolerating a to do list that just doesn’t end.

and kids wonder why when we have time off all we want to do is take naps or sit around and talk.

I took a 45 min nap yesterday and today. They were glorious.

Sat down at a blackjack table last week.  One twenty something bro was ragging on his buddy about how he took two naps that day trying to recover.  Buddy looked at me to pile on.  I said, “two naps?…that sounds glorious.”

Shit I’d be in bed by 10pm and still want the nap the next day

For the last two weeks I've been talking to doctors, nurses and physician's assistants about my stool color, and consistency about as casually as talking about a scratch on the back of my hand.

About a scratch on the back of your hand … that won’t heal. amirite?

Mach 1 enters the chat:

Recently diagnosed with osteoarthritis in one of my hips.  Overuse from running and hiking.  Decided to give some new stem cell therapy a shot rather than the hip replacement.

Pretty wild. They took fat from my mid section, did some sorcery to generate the cells, then injected it between my hip and thigh bone.  Good times.

Said it will take a few weeks to a few months to see results. Hopefully buy some more time before doing the hip replacement, which sounds fucking awful, but apparently has gotten less invasive recently.

This afternoon I took a fall in the back yard while hand watering a dry spot in the grass. Backing up a little bit, I tripped over the hose... then lost balance going backasswards.
I started emanating whooping sounds like Curly of the Three Stooges and finally fell on my back, only partially breaking the terminal velocity with my right elbow.
The hose was still in my left hand, showering me as went down. I tried calling for the wife while on the ground, but was too winded. Finally I managed to get up, probably resembling a struggling beached Beluga whale.
Now my right forearm, shoulder & neck are pretty sore, and may necessitate a visit to the chiropractor.
Mrs. Brat did brush the grass clippings off my nether regions and applied some ointment to the rash on my elbow.
Getting old sucks, to say the least.

Colonoscopy yesterday. Good times. Fuck getting old.

A colonoscopy is a pleasurable experience compared to my last Friday. The hemorrhoids that have been causing intermittent droplets of blood in my shit over the past year finally started producing daily blood.

Colonoscopy last March showed nothing worse than the hemorrhoids and a benign polyp. So the specialist in Houston did a “finger and mini-shallow-scope exam.”

Bent me over a 45 degree angled table with handlebar grips under the sides and went to town. Thank God the dude has dainty digits.

He told me “I didn’t find anything unusual” to which I replied “Not for any lack of effort!”

In any event, the options are full hemorrhoidectomy, staple them all in one procedure, or do a sequence of “tie-off” procedures (there are as many as 6 “tiny” ones in addition to Mount Vesuvius).

But the doc did ask me about my shitting habits, and particularly how long each session lasts. I said that I dutifully get up and off the can soon after my legs go numb.

So he suggested a few weeks of no phone and no magazines in the shitter, and literally to shit, then get off the pot. We’ll see where this goes.

This thread seems like as good a place as any to drop this little idiocy on my part today. Not being able to read anything without +2.50 readers stinks.

Today I went home for lunch before interviewing a candidate for our new VP of HR.  I grabbed a green can from the shelf in the beverage fridge where I thought we only had “Polar” brand seltzer, which looks like this.

My taste is a little messed up from COVID, but even so I thought it tasted funny as I washed down my lunch. I finally looked at the can after finishing half of it.

The result is that a candidate for our head of HR was interviewed by another leader who had beer breath at noon.

Please keep us updated on how this works out for you. I'm interested. Good luck.

Double hip replacement for me 14 years ago.  Super easy.  Anterior approach with sports replacements.  Simple recovery and back playing tennis 3 months later and tournament play after 6 months.   I was 48 when done and no issues since.

You’re getting old. Way, way, way too old for a rave.

Thank you, I'm more interested in the stem cell aspect than the hip replacement. I'm 44 and have already been told knee replacements are in my future. Shit I want to inject that stuff into my elbows, too. That's awesome that it was so successful for you. What the hell happened to your hips that they had to be replaced at such a young age?

Thanks. So far so good. After a week plus I can walk without pain, which has made my Doc very happy. Still kind of tender though. Improvement should occur over time since the idea is to regenerate cartilage and heal a labrum tear.

I’ll follow up after some PT when I try to run again.

Apparently this stem cell therapy is more popular for shoulder and knee cartilage repair, with some good studied results. Hip is an outlier but I decided to give it a shot.

* Insurance said yeah, no, good luck with your experimental procedure*

Osteoarthritis for me.  Played competitive/tournament tennis for 30 years on concrete.  My genetics are sensitive to friction and lays down bone in defense.  I have it all over.  Not a big deal.  Hips were easy and I know lots of tennis players who have had replacements.  The recovery is super simple.  I have arthritic spurs shaved off my knee every 5 years which is great.  Elbow will not straighten but does not affect daily living.

50-55 is when you REALLY start realizing that you can't do most of the stuff that you could do without training or pain.

You must either be short or you can afford first class.
I don't think it's possible for someone over 6' to maintain an hour of sleep in coach.  Hell, I've even tried xanax.  That shit usually knocks me out coooold.  Not when I'm eating my knees and only able to recline the seat an inch.

Steroids make you feel great.  They have an immediate relief since they are so good at reducing inflammation.  All of my ortho docs have said do not take them regularly.  Only in small batches, like your standard prescription.  Long term will cause bone density loss, kidney and liver problems.  Which sucks, because my body really responds well to them.

Sciatica. What the holy hell just happened?
Thursday morning I was fine. For well over 50 years I’ve been fine. Occasionally I’ll throw my lower back out, but some chiro and some core work and I’m back in fighting form.
Thursday morning I a nice run before getting in the car and driving to Abilene. Spent the night in a Marriott Courtyard (no sleep, see the insomnia thread), and woke up with a knife plunging from my left glute down my left hamstring/IT band every time I bent down, sat down, or stood up. Drove 8 hours to ABQ for a nephew’s wedding and dealt with it all weekend. It loosens up after I walk around for a while, but tightens up as soon as I sit for more than a few minutes. Today I drove 11 hours back to ETX and every pit stop was agony. Every time I stand up, sit down, squat, or bend down, it’s like a freaking knife ripping down that section.
I don’t know it’s sciatica but it sure sounds like what a few friends have complained about, and the interwebz seem to confirm it.

I used to get the same shit but it was not caused by disc pressure on the nerve, it was caused by the piriformis. If you are at a desk or driving a lot it could be the same. The pain is the same but fortunately it's far easier to treat than pain caused by a disc...stretching, avoiding uninterrupted sitting for really long periods etc...get it checked out

I woke up Saturday morning with some back pain.  I figured that I had slept wrong since it worked itself out a coupe of hours after I woke up.  I even went bowling with some friends and had my best score ever (205).  I woke up Sunday morning in substantial pain.  Basically, my lower back, hamstrings and thighs have been cramping ever since.  It comes and goes between being tolerable to outright painful.  Last night, I kept getting charlie horses in my hamstrings.  I'm going to go to the doctor today as this has never happened to me before.  There was no traumatic event and I seriously doubt that I am dehydrated as I drink lots of water all day and Tom Herman would be pleased with the color of my pee.  Getting old sucks.
